I get if you did not like Sunrise on the Reaping, I also don’t like a lot of the things in it even if I enjoyed the book overall (tho people ranking it as the best hunger games gotta be kidding me & can see it’s the noobs of thg fandom), HOWEVER, a lot of the criticisms I’ve seen here is honestly reaching. It’s almost like TikTok overly hypes SOTR while Tumblr overly criticizes it (from the antis anyways), but both make really bad takes to support their biases and conflates the books and movies.

I also don’t think the author herself is beyond reproach, but the hate is forced. Everything she can control or said or not said is within the books she published or the few interviews she granted. Outside of that, she’s not the sole or ultimate decision maker, including in the movies. The anger is mostly coz she didn’t do what you want her to do, and projection is not a good argument, especially if you’re also twisting real issues with what’s actually from the books.

But tbh, this is not new, disgruntled readers have done this since the beginning, it’s neither exclusive to the hunger games. It’s just comical how haters and fans of the books become indistinguishable with how much both talk about the series.

I can finally unveil this personal project! My comic version of chapter one of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which I finally managed to get to shortly after SOTR came out. This was a unique project for me that I've been working on, on and off, for the past year or so. Lots and lots of fun, although I did mess up in some parts (typesetting :') ) and the limited color pallette was a unique challenge. Rest of the chapter under the cut! Hope you enjoy :)

What’s your hottest hunger games take? Mine is Burdock and Katniss are definitely connected to the Covey in some ways, BUT all the TikTok theories I’ve seen on who’s Burdock’s mom or how he and Lenore Dove became distant cousins lack any modicum of just paying attention on what was written in the books, what Suzanne Collins has definitely said (she has very few interviews, like it’s not hard to find out what she has said), or just doing basic math or genealogy coz what do you mean Barb is his mother??? What do you mean Barb is not gay even if she canonically dated a woman, just coz she has a uterus that supports your flimsy theory???? What do you mean that Tam has a secret child that is his mother???? How’s there’s a mystery covey when Haymitch had name dropped everyone else????

Also sorry for the constant Sunrise on the Reaping posting but why does the book focus so little on Sid and Haymitch’s mother? In the trilogy, I got the idea that their deaths impacted Haymitch the same way Lenore Dove’s did - even more, considering he lists them before he mentions her.

But in Sunrise, they’re hardly characterized. We get a bit of an idea of Haymitch’s love for Sid via his relationship with Ampert, a la Katniss, Prim, and Rue, but it doesn’t really tell us anything about Sid as a character and takes up a rather minuscule portion of the book as a whole. As for Ma, she’s hardly talked about.

It doesn’t feel right that Haymitch’s grief for Lenore Dove takes up so much of the last quarter of the book when neither of his only immediate family members are mentioned at all.

See, the neglect of his family is SOTR's biggest issue. There is absolutely no reason why Haymitch shouldn't mention the woman who fucking raised him and his darling baby brother in the epilogue when he mentioned everyone else and Lenore Dove ten thousand times. There is no reason for him to not mention the tributes he lost over the years.

To take what originally made Haymitch's story such a tragic mirror to Katniss's in the trilogy and throw it all away as if it didn't matter at all is... something. He thinks about them maybe twice outside of the reaping. It screams lazy writing, but anyone who calls it out just "fell for Capitol propaganda" I guess.

i don't think they were neglected, i feel they were talked about a fair amount, no less than Katniss did in the first book. The first part of his homecoming was largely finding out about the fire and then their funeral, and not seeing Lenore Dove until after.

The epilogue should've mentioned Haymitch looking forward to reuniting with Sid and Willamae as well. But if we're comparing it to Mockingjay, it's consistent coz we also got very limited info in that epilogue too.

However, I do agree with the imbalance, since much of the messaging of the book surrounds more on importance of family, born into or chosen.

While we already did know haymitch had a girl that Snow killed going into the book, and this is just my opinion, it felt forced. At times i feel Lenore Dove's character is just there to further the characters of Snow and Haymitch. She had to die coz of one man's obsession and to motivate another man to fulfill his destiny.

one thing i did like is their discussion on sunrise on the reaping and basically indirectly debating David Hume, but i thought it's a discussion he easily could've had with Maysilee, Plutarch or even his mom.
