Life is an interesting thing. You never know what’s going to happen. One thing day this. Tomorrow, that. Yet we keep going, hoping for and believing in the best. Sending our wishes and dreams out into the universe and praying that they come true.

I’m content. But being content is no longer enough. There is so much more in me that I KNOW I could be doing. So that’s what this year will be about. Doing. And although I know there will be moments I hate it, I know that I cannot stop.

Hello, Thirty-Four

Well, well, well.... Here we stand on the cusp of another birthday. I can actually look back over the year with fondness. 33 was an awesome year. I think this was the year I found out who Nei really is, and learned to accept and embrace that truth. The last eight months or so have been exceptionally amazing due in part to me opening up to new experiences and shedding dead skin. I'm happy. And I love it. I'm in love. In love with living. In love with life. Had a really big health scare a few days ago. Had to face my mortality. But I'm committed to getting and doing better. I have a great support system in my mom and sister. Love them with every ounce of me....and that's a lot. Lol. I'm also coming out from behind that wall I built so long ago. Baby steps, tho. 😁I'm making plans for the future, and if things work out the way I hope..... An actual love life? Ha...not quite there yet, but I haven't ruled out the possibility. I'm just going to take my time, get to know people and rely on my mind more than my heart to make that happen. Prospects? Wouldn't you like to know. I am, though, most appreciative to my friend, my homie, my guy, for every experience and every truth I've had to face. I know now that I can do what I need to do when I need to do it. So, 33, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for introducing me to Nei. Thank you for breaking down barriers. Thank you for building my courage. Thank you for helping me to flourish. Thank you for opening my mind. Thank you for the lessons. Thank you for the gifts. Thank you for you. It's been a grand time getting to know you and I shall remember you always. Hello, 34.... So long, 2014. You leave me with a bittersweet feeling. You see, you weren’t bad, per se, but at the same time, you weren’t good to me either. It’s been a year of lessons. Lessons that at my age seemed to be irrelevant. Yet as I sit here and reminisce on the days of this year’s past I see with clarity what was clouded in their actual moments. I needed you, 2014. I needed you to show me that there could be strength in suffering. I needed you to show me that I could find love in the midst of loss. I needed you to show me that despite it all, I deserve it all. And showed me you did.

Two people. Two major and influential people. Karl Bernard and Hattie Lee. In 2014 I said goodbye to you. Heart really heavy, I look to the sky for you. Gone to soon, I still cry for you. Sufficating pain, thought I would die without you. But I’m not without you. My thoughts are full of you. My heart overflows with you. I love and I miss you. Now I live for you.

No More Solo Office Parties!!!

Office Christmas party 2014 I pull out the little black dress, slip on some FABULOUS pumps, beat my face to within an inch of life, spray on some smell good, throw on a coat, and roll out… SOLO

When I get there we stand around chit chatting. I’m introduced to girlfriends, boyfriends, wives, and husbands. All is well. After warming up a bit I excuse myself to check my coat. When I reenter the room everything changes. Warm smiles turn cool. Boyfriends and husband are held a little tighter. And laser beam eyes track my every move around the room.

"So THIS is what you’ve been hiding under all of those pants suits?" "Damn, Nei, when you come out, you COME OUT." And my favorite, "DAMN, GIRL!!!" Insert eyeroll here. The very men who treat me with a cool regard Monday through Friday have suddenly become Mr. Attentive. I spent the evening turning down offers to retrieve drinks, get food, take pictures, and dance all while dodging death ray stares. There was even one girlfriend that approached me and asked if there was something she "needed to know." The question is "Why, though?"

Don’t get me wrong, I know that I’m pretty, and when I clean up, I CLEAN UP. But I’m honest enough to admit that I don’t garner that kind of attention on the regular. I spoke to a friend about it. His reply, “Nei, you need to open your eyes and see what we see. You don’t know how much of a threat you are. The greatest accessory a woman can wear is confidence. You walked in on ten, and everyone in the room couldn’t do anything but take notice. You owned it, and they couldn’t stand it.”

Sounds good, huh? So where is this girl all the other days of the week? I like her! We’ve got to bring her out more. Lol

Nei Day Eve 2014

So…. Here we are at the eve of another Nei Day. First and foremost, thank God I made it this far. 32 wasn’t the year I’d hoped it would be. Partly because of me, partly for other reasons. But it was an eye opening year of trials and lessons. I’d like to think that I’m wiser because of it, but the truth is that wise or not, I’m still going to make mistakes. Im still going to take risks. And I’m still going to make some not so wise decisions. The difference now is that I understand it. And I accept the challenge.

I’ve decided to make a bucket list for the year. 33 before 34. 33 things I want and am going to do before my 34th birthday.

Here’s to an amazing year!
