Other people's lives were far more interesting than Larry's, at least...from his own perspective anyway. In the daytime he worked as a Gym Leader, and at night he just went home to sleep; no doubt in his mind that his younger self was more exciting than his current self. Well, at the very least being a Gym Leader was exciting enough that he often looked forward to it.
"Yeah, it's difficult to find stuff that keeps you motivated. I'm glad you were able to find something to keep you going, you definitely have that uh, "fire ablaze" aura." Soft nod follows his statement, ghost of a smile dancing across his lips whilst Kabu looked at the ceiling.
"A food blog...?" Briefly did Rika bring up the idea whilst the two were out for drinks, showing off various other blogs made by other trainers or just everyday people. Larry hardly used the internet unless Geeta required him to, a definite roadblock he could likely get past with the help of Poppy or Nemona. "Hm. That would be new, I'm sure Kofu would enjoy the publicity... Do you have experience with that kind of thing?"
Kabu shrugged slightly, although he wasn't as knowledgeable about the internet compared to other gym leaders in Galar such as Nessa or Raihan he did know a little about it and used it occasionally.
After nodding his head he commented, "I do have some experience with it. When it's the offseason for the gym challenge sometimes I make food and either post the process of me making it and also the finished product on my social media account."
Placing his hand on his chin he then asked Larry, "What I was thinking...something that you could also do is that you could take pictures of the food you eat and do a small review of the dish you ate. Do you think it's something that you would like doing? You could even have a rating for each dish you try as well."
[TEXT]: hey bapak kabu can I stay at your place sometime in the next two months for like a week? I forgot I managed to qualify for a championship and it’s in motostoke and I kinda don’t want to be in a hotel again.
[TEXT] also don’t ask how I forgot that I qualified for a championship; I was more or less disassociating on stage.
[TEXT]: Sure Agni, that's fine! I don't mind, you can stay as long as you like. I hope that you will do well in this competition.
[TEXT]: If you're interested, I can also send you some breathing exercises you can do before you get on stage. I use them before the gym and/or tournament battles I have.
Kabu's not a father obviously, but he is a father figure to many people so Happy Father's Day to him
What motivated him?
Not a difficult question by any means, but it had him contemplating. After practically ordering everything off the menu to put in his hot pot, he'd lean back in his chair. At his age barely anything motivated him outside of food and getting his paycheck; he certainly wasn't like Rika or Hassel who had a drive and wants...well, that weren't just simple things like food.
"..No clue, honestly." Eyes initially looking at the ceiling now turn down back to Kabu, "Food is a big motivator I guess, but nothing outside of that. I never really had any crazy aspirations when I was a kid; I just wanted a normal life of going to work and coming home. I'm sure your life is a lot more exciting than mine, though."
Kabu slightly tilted his head in mild confusion. He didn't think his own life was that exciting, although from an outsider's perspective it was. Being able to be a gym leader and participate in battles where a lot of people were watching, either at the stadium or from their devices. Going to other places in the Pokemon world and experiencing different things. But to Kabu that was routine for him, he's been doing these type of things for over a decade now.
"I don't think my life is that exciting honestly, to me it's very routine. I'm not saying I dislike my job, I love being a gym leader. But the hardest thing at times is to find the kindling to keep the fire ablaze. Especially when you're at rock bottom like I was a few years ago. But I overcame that, and I am more resilient now because of it." He then sighed looking up, remembering that time and feeling grateful that he's in a better place now.
Kabu then looked back at Larry and asked, "Have you ever considered making a blog about food? Maybe you can try entrees from different restaurants and write your thoughts on it. If you're interested in doing that, of course."

Finally got off my lazy ass and scanned my sketches! While I'm cleaning them up and making them more presentable, here's my first sketch of Kabu!🔥
Nothing ever excited Larry anymore; after spending so much time within the work force, his eagerness and excitement for finally earning his own money fizzled. Once an eager youth, he'd now become a tired older man who's only ever joy came from food. Kabu had plenty of things that made him happy, it almost made Larry jealous.
"Mm, I didn't take you for a "foodie" or whatever term they throw around." Well, it's still nice to know more facts about his friend. A small nod as he quietly walks into the restaurant, flagging down a waitress and getting the two of them a table.
"A favorite? Hm... I enjoy this one dish at the restaurant I frequent: Grilled rice balls, extra crispy, fire blast style with lemon. If you ever come to Paldea, I should show you that dish... I think you would enjoy it, maybe.."
As Kabu sat down, he thought about the dish Larry enjoyed. The mixture of the spicy flavor and the crispy texture sounded very appealing to him, due to his love of spicy food. He assumed it was spicy to the style being called Fire Blast.
Maybe when he visited Paldea again, more specifically Medali he would visit the restaurant Larry enjoyed and try the food for himself to see how tasty it was.
"That sounds very good…I think I would enjoy it," Kabu comments with a smile. As he orders the ingredients he wants to add in his hot pot, he asks "What fuel keeps your fire ablaze? I mean, what motivates you to keep on going? I know that your job is tough, and because of that I want you to have a good time here and enjoy yourself."
He was feeling reflective today after doing so much training, and due to that was interested to see what Larry thought about himself.
"What does ;3 mean, and what do I send in return to that?"
If anything, he's surprised his status as a "foodie" or whatever people referred to him as. Kofu seemed to throw that term around quite a bit whenever he came into his restaurant, and it seems like his reputation spread to other regions. "Diets never really appealed to me... There's so much food out there that I want to try, I wouldn't want to limit it.. Though- your will to keep going with yours at your age is commendable..."
Quietly he'd follow behind Kabu, attempting to keep up even as his legs screamed at him.
As he was walking, he contemplated what Larry said. From his impression of him Kabu felt like that he was tired and overworked and that food was something that made him happy, especially when he stated that there was so much food that he wanted to try. Kabu felt the same way, he enjoyed trying different cuisines on his travels although he still strictly stuck to his training routine.
Kabu wanted Larry to relax and also he wanted to get to know him more, since to him talking while eating tasty food was the best way for him to do so. There seemed to be more to Larry and Kabu was curious.
While he approached the restaurant, Kabu commented as he opened the door for Larry "Understandable, I do the same. When I go to other regions during tournaments, I always try to go to a restaurant and try the local food that's there. It's always a great experience, especially the differences in flavors. Those tastes awaken a fire that's deep in my soul, I don't know how to describe it other than that. Speaking of that, do you have a favorite dish?"
"Here's a chant for Agni! I wish you well at your event and hope you get a top 3 finish."
"Go Agni! You can do it! Unleash the blazing fire that's inside of your soul!"
"I could never work with Fire types, they're all too flashy for my liking.. I remember hearing of a kid from that school who's big on Fire types, but I haven't encountered her. Though, I wonder what a normal type uniform would look like..."
Even with his blank expression, eyes would light up at Kabu's inquiry. "Oh, I've never been there. I remember a trainer who used to live in Galar mentioned Huo Guo Hot Pot, and I've been super curious about it... I intentionally avoided looking at their menu so I could be surprised when I did eventually go."
As he listened to Larry, Kabu nodded his head and smiled. "I understand, and yes it would definitely be better if you went in there not expecting anything especially what the ingredients you can use. I don't go there too often since for me due to my training I'm on a diet, but there's times where I enjoy going there to treat myself or others like you. I heard from other people that you're a foodie, so I know that you'll love it! Follow me."
Kabu then started walking towards the location of Huo Guo Hot Pot at a steady pace but not too fast so Larry would be able to keep up with him.
"As you know in Galar we have to wear uniforms, so due to that I don't mind others putting on accessories to make themselves stand out a bit and letting their creativity show. That depends on the person of course, for example you look very stylish in your suit. It gives off a classy ambiance."
"I've noticed that... Not only you, but other Gym Leaders are often seen with uniforms. It almost makes me wonder who came up with that rule, though in Paldea you're free to wear whatever you want."
Hand idly rubs the back of his neck.
"I'm just used to wearing suits for my job, so they come naturally to me I guess... My boss seems to agree, because she hasn't said anything about it. I couldn't imagine wearing something like your uniform, you pull it off better than I do."
Kabu smiled after Larry complimented him. "Thank you! I also wear a compression shirt under my uniform. It helps with the sweat, since when you're training and battling with Fire types all of that heat is going to make you sweat and it causes chafing and...you get the point."
After looking up at the sky in thought, he looked back at Larry and asked him, "Do you like Hot Pot? I was thinking we could go to Huo Guo Hot Pot and get something to eat there. Since they are one of my sponsors, I have a gold card that allows me and anyone else accompanying me to eat there for free."
"Looking at Norman's outfit...the trendy sports jacket and with the collar popped up as well. I wonder if people look at him and assume that he's an absolute bellend....well I would tell those lot that you can't judge a book by its cover."
"It's better than wearing something flashy.. Plenty of gym leaders seem to prefer wearing outfits that make them stand out. I don't really understand, but it's their choice, I guess.."
