Collateral Innocence explores what it’s like growing up in chaos through the eyes of a child. The poem touches on neglect, addiction, violence, poverty, and the responsibilities many children end up carrying before they should have. Some of the things mentioned, like lice, roaches, hunger, dirty clothes, or an unclean home, are often looked down on or made fun of. But those things were never the child’s fault.

If you’ve lived through something similar, I hope this poem helps you feel seen.

*** explores the conflict between what society says love is and what the speaker has personally experienced. Flowers commonly represent love. The speaker questions this by comparing their experience with the fate of the flowers. The ultimate conflict within the speaker is: If flowers represents love and love is supposed to be kind, patient, healing, gentle, and more then how come we both experienced love accompanied by pain?***

I just want to shed light on the hidden pain, shame, guilt, & internal conflict we carry within ourself.

*** explores the experience of living under relentless self judgement and internal conflict with the jury representing (how it resonates with you) friends, family, therapists ect.. the speaker offers sacrifice, punishment, self abandonment, and suffering, believing if they endure enough pain they’ll finally be forgiven or accepted. While desperately trying to figure out why it’s never enough.***
