Whoâs the Best?
Have you ever wondered what itâs like to be the very best at something? I am talking about being the best at what you truly want to do in life. Your passion. Not just waking up one day and having magically been given the gift of greatness. As freakinâ awesome as that would be, that is just not how it works. I imagine that it would feel pretty great knowing you are the best. Why? Because you are the one that made it happen. You are the one that put in the hours upon hours of hard work. You are the one that remained dedicated when all others stopped believing. Because becoming the best does not happen over night.
Letâs talk a little about the path to becoming the best, shall we? First off, it is a long road to greatness. We have all heard this before...and if you have no desire to be great then no worries. It honestly is not for everyone and there is no shame in enjoying life in other ways. But for those who do want it.... There are ups and down, ebbs and flows, positives and negatives, goods times and bad. Let me be honest with you, for as many of the good times that you will go through, there are going to be at least double the bad.
Throughout the journey to becoming the best there are going to be many deterring experiences that you will go through. You will fail over and over. You will be rejected, laughed at, told you are wrong, scolded that you will never make it and many more. These experiences must not keep you down. They cannot. In fact they must do the opposite. They must give you strength and power, knowledge and wisdom, skill and prowess all toward your goal. How so? Through learning from them. Each ânegative experienceâ you have while working toward your goal can be taken and turned into a learning experience, each of which making you better.
This will go on for a while. Then, after years and years of hard work, when you are finally getting ahead of the competition, someone new may come along and seem to pass right by you. Metaphorically speaking you are running that marathon, kicking ass, and some random A-hole sprints right on by, and they look good. Do not let them distract you. During times like this you must remember that your journey is not a race, and the road that they just ran past you on will lead them somewhere different than your own. You just need to stay on track and continue moving forward.
But here is the thing, the question that you should ask yourself if you end up in a situation similar to this...Did I get passed because they were moving at a faster pace, or because I slowed mine down? Â People have a tendency when they start to gain skill to then gain confidence, which has an unfortunate accompaniment of complacency. In other words, we tend to get comfortable. We do not always notice it, but when/if we do, it is a slap in the face. At that time It is a well needed wake up call. No one enjoys being passed in a race. No one enjoys losing. No one enjoys being second to another, especially when it is our own fault. Even though your life and your journey to success is no race, at times, it most certainly can feel like one. So do your best to stay focused and keep your pace.
A key factor to keeping yourself at a steady pace and not slowing for too long is staying humble. In regards to the situation above, you must stay humble or else someone will come along and humble you. One thing that I like to constantly remind myself is that I never know everything. Not even close. No one does. There is always more to learn and you should be hungry to learn it. If someone knows more than you then use that person to your advantage and learn from them. Notice I did not say to take advantage of them, that is something totally different. Do not be jealous and hold an immature grudge because they are doing better than you. This will only hold you back. There is no law saying that we cannot all be successful. You are exactly where you have let yourself be in life. Someone elseâs success has nothing to do with your own. Learn from those who are where we want to be.
At times when we feel comfortable and become complacent in our lives we tend to be one of the smartest people in the room. The crowd that we surround ourselves with becomes full of people who know less than we do when it comes to our âexpertiseâ. If this is the case with you and your crowd, then it is time to expand and find more people to surround yourself with. This is not me telling you to ditch your friends for scientists and philosophers. This is not me telling you to ditch your friends at all. Absolutely not. All I am saying is that you should seek-out those who are where you want to be. They have much to teach and you have much to learn.
So who really is the best? There will always be someone better than you, for now, but if you truly want to be the best it will be a very long and very hard journey. At times you will get discouraged. At times you will feel lost. At times you will feel alone. At times you will feel like a failure. The important thing is that you keep moving forward. Our journeys are all different. Others will be on their way up while others seem to be coming down. Stay humble and learn from those who are willing to help. The thing is, all of our Summits are Hidden. You will never know when you are going to reach the top, but as long as you are becoming better, one day you will get where you want to be. So instead of asking yourself who is the best? Instead, stay focused and ask yourself, am I being my best?
