Citizens, the nineteenth century is a great century, but the twentieth century will be a happy one. Nothing like the history of old – not any more. There'll be no reason then to fear, as we do today, conquest, invasion, usurpation, rivalry between armed nations, civilisation interrupted by a marriage of kings, a birth within the hereditary tyrannies, a partition of peoples by congress, dismemberment brought about by the collapse of a dynasty, a conflict between two religions coming up against each other, like two goats of darkness on the bridge of infinity. There'll be no reason to fear famine, exploitation, prostitution as a result of poverty, destitution as a result of unemployment, and the sword, and the scaffold, the battles, and all the banditry of chance in the forest of incidents. You might almost say there will be no more incidents. People will be happy.
Hey I just woke up from a 127-year coma, how did that twentieth century go? Pretty much like this, I imagine?
Oliver's Warty Pig Sus oliveri

Socialists, anarchists, and communists need to spend more time reckoning with the fact that the entire history of these movements is a history of failure. Marxism had led to either Western European Social Democracy, which is basically indistinguishable from bourgeois politics, or the totalitarian nightmares of Stalinism. Anarchists have done nothing much except when we participated in a couple of revolutions that we lost. And when you say this, people get defensive and try to point out the success of this or that strike or riot. Yes, there have been partial or relative victories, but have the workers been in control of the means of production? Have classes and the state been abolished?
That doesn't mean we should give up on the goal, or, again, that there haven't been successes along the way, but I think it does call for a careful rethinking of what we're doing. If we're doing anything.
do you think insight can be gained about an author from the stories they write?
no. authors are like squids and can only be understood through spirited but ultimately futile combat
