High School Freshman Advice
I’m starting my senior year of high school and just wanted to give some advice to students coming into high school. I’m going off of what I’ve experienced from my last 3 years :)
Don’t start slacking off just because it’s your first year in high school, GRADES MATTER. Colleges will pay attention to that.
Don’t stress out. Freshman year is the easiest year, education wise, so just do the work and turn it in.
Ask your teachers for help or advice. Most of your teachers are willing to help out their students if you just ask them for some help. Go to tutoring if you really need to because it’ll help on those tests.
If you can, check your grades at least every week or so, so you can talk to your teachers about what you need to fix early on.
If you’re absent, have a friend send you the notes and homework for. each class you missed so you can stay caught up with the class. Trust me when I say, THIS HELPS A LOT.
Study what you can and need for big tests. Like I said before, don’t start slacking off because you think grades don’t matter this year.
FINALS WILL KILL YOU IF YOU DONT PASS, so please, study hard for those finals. Just don’t stay up the night before, studying, because you won’t be focused and could end up getting a bad grade.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask anybody for help when finding your classes. Especially if it’s a fellow freshman that you’re asking and they have a map. That’s what I did my first day as a freshman and I’m still alive.
As mentioned before, don’t stay up all night studying for a test. Get a good, full night of sleep and eat breakfast before you take that test.
Bring your own lunch if you can, school food is disgusting. If you can’t bring your own lunch, make sure to at least bring some money for the vending machines.
HYGIENE IS SUPER IMPORTANT. Please shower every day and wear some deodorant and perfume/cologne. No one wants to smell your body odor. Also, please brush your teeth, that’s also very important!
Bring a bottle of water or some coffee in the morning to start your day awake and refreshed.
Make sure to wear a jacket when it starts getting cold out! Also, if you want too, bring a light jacket/sweater to wear during class because some classrooms get really cold.
If you feel like your outfit, hair, or makeup are not on point that day, don’t worry about it! Each and every one of you are beautiful, and don’t forget that!!
Ignore any negative comments that are thrown at you. Those people are jealous and just want attention, so don’t give them the satisfaction of getting upset.
Think positively! High school can be rough, especially when most kids can be really mean. If you think positively about things, you’re going to have a good year :)
Don’t be afraid to try out for sports or join clubs! That’s where you’ll meet a bunch of wonderful people, who might even become your closest friends!
Even if you didn’t get a spot on the team, it’s not the end of the world. You’ll still have 3 more years to try out for the same sport.
Don’t expect to graduate with the same friends you came in with. You’re going to lose some friends and you’re going to get new ones.
Avoid any and all drama you can. It doesn’t help anybody and it won’t matter in a few months anyways.
UPPERCLASSMEN DON’T LOVE YOU. They’re only saying that so they can get in your pants and move on the their next victim.
No, we don’t throw pennies at you. Whoever made that up was just trying to scare you into thinking that everybody bullies the freshmen.
Even if you’re not joining a club or sport, have some school spirit! Get involved and go to games to support your school!
Pep rallies/assemblies are lit. It’s just not the same as the ones you had in middle school.
For the love of god, DO NOT STOP IN FRONT OF PEOPLE WHEN THEY’RE TRYING TO GET TO CLASS! It doesn’t matter if you’re a freshman or a senior, just don’t, it’s annoying.
Also, please don’t yell to your friends across the damn school, especially at lunch time. That just shows everyone how annoying and immature you are.
You only have 5-6 minutes to get to your class. I suggest going to your classes the first week before trying to meet up and talk to your friends before they start.
Don’t try to act all high and mighty to act cool, because you’re not. Most people think freshmen are annoying, don’t give them a reason to believe that you are.
We don’t actually hate you, we just tell you we do to scare you a little bit.
Be who you normally are and don’t act fake. Rumors spread like wildfire so don’t bother being one, because everyone’s going to find out, one way or another.
Bring your phone and charger. Teachers will let you charge your phones in class as long as you aren’t using them as a distraction. Bring a portable charger if you can.
To add on, bring a pair of earbuds to listen to music in between classes or even during classes. Some teachers will let you listen to music while you’re working.
Bring a pack of gum or mints. It’ll help freshen your breath after lunch and it’ll also help you focus.
You don’t need everything the teacher tells you to bring to their class. Give it a week and then get anything you know you’ll need.
ALWAYS BRING A PENCIL AND A PEN. Some teachers might make you write in both pencil and pen so be prepared for that. Make sure to bring a spare just in case you lose them.
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, let ANYONE BORROW A PENCIL. The chances of them giving it back are about 0.
Get a notebook or at least some college ruled paper to write your notes in. Don’t be that person who always asks for stuff.
If your school doesn’t have lockers (like mine), bring a backpack to wear at school. Don’t try to carry all of your stuff with your arm all day because you’ll most likely regret it. People are just going to think you’re weird for not bringing a backpack like everybody else.
Well that’s it for my advice to freshman. I’ll do a sophomore and junior one another time just to let people know what to expect in those years. Thanks for taking the time and reading this! :)
