Sherlock Holmes in Germany
Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes in the episode “ The Solitary Cyclist”(1984)
The Granada series was first shown in Germany on East German television in 1987. Over here it never achieved the popularity of the movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The television series was only very rarely shown while the classic movies are constantly repeated on German television.
In the first seven episodes Jeremy Brett was dubbed by Franz Viehmann (1939 - 2016), a long-standing ensemble member of the famous Brecht theater “Berliner Ensemble”. Here is an example of the vivacity and very amusing eccentricity of his dubbing version. Since the eight episode he unfortunately was replaced by other voice actors while his fellow actor Werner Ehrlicher constantly dubbed Dr. Watson even when David Burke was replaced by Edward Hardwicke.
