This is a scene from one of my all-time favourite movies, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller.
I seriously recommend to watch it, because it’s one of the most moving and emotional movies I’ve ever seen. I am personally very attached to this particular scene, because I deeply feel myself being portrayed by the character of Charlie (Logan Lerman), as I believe he too is an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person).
There are a lot of articles about HSPs, but I will just sum it up by saying that HSPs feel emotions and physical pain a lot more than normal people. One thing which is very peculiar for HSP, is not only the ability to feel and process their own pain more deeply than others, but also the ability of feeling and absorbing other people’s emotions. This is both a gift and a curse. But a lot of the time I find it is a curse, as it makes you feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world, and of your pain and others’ pain, on your own shoulders.
Charlie is right: there’s so much pain, and we don’t know how not to notice it. It never stops.
And it is always difficult because most of the time people don’t understand you and feel as if you’re being exaggerated, while in reality, it is not. It’s a personality type, and a very peculiar one.
Shout out to The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful movie. And book.
