Music echoed through Ereborâs great hall as you slipped away, the corridors growing quieter the farther you went until the only sound left was the soft scrape of your boots against the stone floor. You told yourself that was why youâd come out here.
âYouâre getting very good at disappearing.â
FĂli leaned against the stone arch behind you, arms crossed, though you knew that there was nothing casual about the way he was looking at you.
âIâm not avoiding you,â you said, the words falling from your mouth far too quickly to be convincing.
His brow lifted. âYou havenât spoken more than five words to me in a week.â
You avoided FĂliâs gaze, focusing instead on the flickering shadows stretching across the corridor walls as guilt slowly crept in. He noticed. Of course he did. FĂli always noticed when it came to you.
âSo have I,â he replied, pushing off the wall and stepping closer to you. âThatâs never stopped you before.â
You exhaled slowly. âThings are different now.â
âBecause Iâm a prince?â he asked.
âYes.â The word landed harder than you meant it to.
Hurt flickered across his face but he didnât step back. âAnd what does that make you?â
You hesitated. âSomeone who doesnât belong in that world.â
âIt is,â you insisted, finally forcing yourself to meet his gaze. His eyes searched yours so openly it nearly unraveled you. âYou have duties, expectations, people who rely on you. You canât just chooseââ
âWhy not?â he cut in.
âBecause itâs not just about you anymore!â
âItâs never just been about me,â he shot back, frustration slipping through at last. âNot since the Company. Not since you.â
You swallowed hard, throat tightening painfully. âThatâs exactly why this has to stop.â
âThis?â His voice dropped. âYou mean whatever it is between us that you refuse to name?â
The certainty in his tone made your breath hitch.
âYou donât get to end something weâve never even allowed ourselves to start,â he said.
You released a shaky breath. âIâm trying to do the right thing.â
âFor who?â he demanded.
His jaw tightened. âYou keep saying that like I donât get a say.â
âYou donât understandââ
âI understand perfectly,â he interrupted, stepping closer again, near enough now that you could feel the warmth radiating from him in the cold corridor air. âYouâre afraid. Not of meâbut of what this means.â
âOf course I am. This could complicate everything.â You murmured.
âThen let it,â he said plainly.
âItâs not that simple.â
You shook your head, taking a step back. âFĂli, please, just let this go.â
Something in him snapped, not into anger, but into something far more honest. âI cannot change my feelings for you,â he said, the words breaking free. âBelieve me, I tried.â
âI told myself it wasnât right. That it wouldnât work. That youâd leave, or Iâd have to,â he continued, voice quieter now but unwavering. âI tried to bury it beneath duty, beneath expectations, beneath everything waiting for me here.â His eyes locked onto yours. âBut none of it mattered.â
Your throat tightened as tears slowly pooled in your eyes, tears threatening to fall with every passing second.
âIt still doesnât,â he added. âNot compared to this.â
âFĂliâŚâ Your voice wavered.
âNo,â he said gently, but firmly. âIf youâre going to walk away from me, at least be honest about why.â
You looked down, your resolve unraveling. âBecause I love you.â The confession came out softer than you expected, barely above a whisper, but it struck between you like a blow. âAnd loving you means knowing I donât fit in your future.â
For a heartbeat neither of you moved. Then he stepped closer again, closing the distance youâd tried so desperately to create until there was barely space left between you at all. âYou donât get to decide my future for me,â he said quietly. âYouâre already in it.â
âThatâs not how it works.â
âIt is if I say it is.â
You almost laughed, breath shaky. âYou make it sound so easy.â
A small smile touched his face then, softer than before, though his eyes never left yours. âI donât think itâll be easy,â he admitted honestly. âI just think itâll be worth it.â
You searched his face carefully, desperately, looking for hesitation and uncertainty, but you found none. There was only warmth. Certainty. Love so painfully clear it made your chest ache.
âThis could change everything,â you whispered.
âGood,â he said softly.
Your heart twisted painfully at the simple answer. You tried to be reasonable, distant, sensible. You tried to convince yourself that wanting him was selfish. Slowly, almost cautiously, finally surrendering to the inevitable, you let your hand brush against his.
This time, he didnât hesitate. His fingers closed around yours instantly, warm and sure. âStay,â he said, quieter now, not as a command, nor as a plea, but in quiet hope.
