Mission: Impossible

He knew it was a wasted effort to get Asuma to quit smoking for good. But, that didn’t stop Shikamaru from trying at least a little.
Within the small box was a “pack” of electronic cigarettes – 6 in total – with instructions. Even if his mentor didn’t ever use it, at least the somewhat safer option was now in his grasp.
As always, Shikamaru left the gift by the door, knocked, and left. Attached was, also as always, a simple note:
Happy birthday.

Asuma wasn’t exactly scared of showing emotions, but he thought everything had a time and a place. Telling Shikamaru he was actually quite touched by the present he gave Asuma was one of those “never a time” things.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t known everyone’s opinion on his, yes, very bad, habit, it was just mostly they made passive aggressive jokes about it. He thought back to their awkward sorry you’re dead conversation, and guiltily rubbed his neck. He supposed, if he was alive here, the mature thing would be to try and stay alive.
Y’know, so as not to traumatize his students and daughter. Again.
Idly flicking the paper with his thumb, he considered his options. Finally, he slipped the present into his pocket, and grabbed his phone.
