Illinois Member Seeks Fall Interns

Spring 2012 Internship

Are you interested in politics and public service? Would you like to spend the summer living and working in the nation’s capital? Congressman Denny Rehberg’s Washington D.C. office is looking for two full time interns for the spring of 2012.

The ideal candidate will be a junior or senior in college with an interest in politics/government and possess the following skills: good phone etiquette, detail-oriented, friendly, motivated, self-starter, excellent research and writing skills and the ability to multi-task. Fall Semester Interns

Congressman Rick Crawford is seeking interns for his DC office for the remainder of the Fall Semester.

In my Washington, DC office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students. Although all internships in my offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students’ hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

In Washington, interns’ responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

In 1980, fewer than 500,000 Americans were in prison; today, the number is 2.3 million. To put that statistic in perspective, the median incarceration rate among all countries is 125 prisoners for every 100,000 people. In England, it’s 153; Germany, 89; Japan, a mere 63. In America, it’s 743, by far the highest in the world. Include all the U.S. residents currently on probation or parole, and our country’s correctional population soars to about 7.2 million—roughly one in every 31 Americans. All told, the U.S. incarcerates nearly 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, even though it’s home to only 5 percent of the world’s inhabitants.

Cantor To Obama: Let’s Nix More Than Half Your Jobs Bill

"I haven't had a chance to see the bill, there is no bill yet, so I want to wait to see the bill," Cantor said. "I will tell you that over half, I think, of the total dollar amount is so-called stimulus spending. We've been there, done that. The country can not afford more spending like the stimulus bill."

The White House's own descriptions of its bill indicate that, spending is just under half the cost of the bill. It rises to more than half if you don't count extension of the current payroll tax cut as new stimulus.

There could easily be a fight about how to pay for the plan as well. The White House is proposing to pay for most of it by ending tax deductions and closing loopholes that benefit wealthy Americans and private equity firms and hedge fund managers. On the latter, Cantor said Republicans would have to look very closely at Obama's proposal.

"If there is an underlying ownership interest in an asset meaning that there is capital at risk, so if the deal goes bust there's no money if the deal's successful, there's a return, you pay the capital income tax...I'm not for changing that."

President Obama's pushing Congress, hard, to pass the whole bill. Cantor's remarks suggest he'll have to decide soon whether to continue his pressure campaign, or cut a deal with Republicans and get what he can quickly.

This is an excellent opportunity to observe the inner-workings of a busy press office and gain valuable Capitol Hill experience. Duties include assisting with daily clips, creating a daily media report, drafting advisories, pitching press events, maintaining media contact lists, and research. Position requires a keen attention to detail, the ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines, and the ability to demonstrate professionalism and discretion at all times. Strong writing and grammar skills and proficiency of Microsoft Office applications required. Journalism/communications background and Florida ties a plus. Why I tumbl.

I created this tumblr because I was once in your shoes. I was once desperate for an internship on the hill and had no idea how to go about getting my dream job. My tumblr is to help internship hunters by doing three key things:

1. POSTING INTERNSHIP OPENINGS  One of the hardest parts about getting the internship is knowing what is available.  Job postings for the hill are scattered all over the internet. Some are only posted in private emails listservs.  I plan on posting internships that I hear about on this tumblr.

2. GENERAL JOB SEARCH STRATEGIES  I will tumbl about job search strategies.  They will be geared towards a political job hunt, but the advice will be applicable to most jobs.  This includes things like interview tips, resume advice, networking ideas, and cover letter how-tos.

3. BLOGGING ABOUT THE HILL  In order to write a great cover letter and ace your interview, you have to know a thing or two about politics.  You have to know about what's happening on the hill.  Expect a TON of political blogging.  While this may reveal my personal political bias, I will post openings from both Democrats and Republicans.
