at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95Β°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
I am watching mentalist and is on season 2 and I have to say, I love Jane and his very complicated feelings for Lisbon. Like, I think, Lisbon's feelings for him is pretty straightforward. She likes Jane as a person a lot , has some feelings for him and finds him hot. But at the same time she knows Jane has gone through such a big trauma in his life and is still in love with his wife. Therefore she keeps her distance and tries to suppress her feelings. But she (most times) never let her feelings cloud her judgement and calls Jane out. It's clear. It's uncomplicated. But jane is a whole different story. He is the epitome of "I want to have my cake and eat it too". He is attracted to Lisbon but he doesn't want to date her(yet). Because in his mind, having feelings for anyone would be like cheating on his wife as he still considers himself to be married. He loves Angela and to him, she is the only person in his life who will occupy the romantic space for him(for now). He never takes his ring off and it's clear that he still loves her and is way too far from moving on. But the thing is that, he feels something for Lisbon. He doesn't want to name it because naming it would bring it to surface and will start the whole "Im betraying my wife after causing her death" thing in his mind. But Jane being a hopeless romantic, craves that connection and is getting it fulfilled through Lisbon. So instead of recognizing it, he wraps it in friendly banter because it's not betrayal to his wife if they are just friends. They are coworkers who banters. He loves their status quo. He spends time with her everyday, flirts with her, annoys her and makes het laugh. Its fun. The interesting thing occurs when someone tries to break that status quo. Like, when he realises Bosco is in love with her, he is tiny bit jealous, not just because he likes her, but because he knows she also respects him a lot and likes him(even platonically). So he is threatened when Lisbon shows emotional connection with other people because deep down he is scared someone will take Lisbon away like RJ did with Charlotte and Angela. "He loves you, how could he not" is some of that desparation coming outside. And his smugness when Lisbon risks her career for him or when she defends him from bosco is lot more than ego. It's a reassurance that he is indeed special for her.

the mentalist as text posts
If you are feeling good about yourself or situation and then your mood suddenly shifts leaving you feeling insecure, unsure, etc. try to remind yourself that nothing has truly changed but your perception. Your cute outfit did not suddenly become horrid. Your delicious meal did not tranform into a terrible one. Your peers perception of you has not radically transformed over a social misstep. Everything we experience is put through it through our mental filter, and that can convince us that everyone else sees us with the judgement we have for ourselves. Be kind to yourself.
