My take on Dae-hos backstory (spoilers for season 3)
I guess the good thing about not having a character's background revealed is that you can make up your own canon lol. Anyways..
I think Dae-ho did enlist in the marines and in unit 1140 like he said, in order to please his father. However, not long after he joined the infamous shooting happened and he was there when it happened. He obviously survived but developed PTSD and had to be moved to social services. So he did serve a bit, but not a long time before that happened.
The tattoo was an attempt to hide the truth from his father -look, im a tough marine. However his father did eventually find out the truth and attacked his son. However Dae-ho fought back. Fought back so hard that he sent his father into the depths of hell.
As en exmarine his father was commonly respected and so, fearing the punishment, Dae-ho spent the next time hiding and avoiding the authorities, hence he found himself in debt. The recruiter found him. End of the story.
And also that he felt a lot of grief and blamed himself for his fathers death, even though he was abusive and overall a danger to Dae-ho, so he developed a habit of trying to convince himself that it wasn't his fault. And he, subconsciously or not, repeated the tactic after the rebellion.
And as Gi-hun was chasing and choking him, Dae-ho got flashbacks to every time his father would do the same to him, and he eventually no longer saw Gi-hun.. he saw his father, chasing him with a knife, throwing him to the ground and choking him. His last words "it is all your fault" were directed not to Gi-hun but to his own father. It's your fault i am such a loser... my life has been over before it even happened because of you.. it's your fault I ended up here... it's your fault, it's all your f...

DO IT PLS
âWe need more male characters showing fear and being scared with realistic human reactionsâ
You couldnât even handle him
DAE-HO HATERS DO NOT INTERACT âźď¸
Iâm sorry but fuck the baby plot in Squid Game 3
If the show wanted the audience to see that Gi-hun ânever lost who he really wasâ, then they should never have him kill Dae-ho and let him die in hide and seek for failing to kill an opponent. But we know they werenât going to kill him off in the first two episodes. Letâs be real, Dae-ho was never a damn âvillainâ. Dae-hoâs only crime was that he lied about being in the marine so he could get into Gi-hunâs group BECAUSE HE FELT SAFE WITH GI-HUN.
Dae-ho didnât even have to join the rebellion in the first place. But he did. Because he was being brave. BECAUSE HE WANTED TO HELP. But in the end in got scared. Like most people would.
Dae-ho was never a bad person for being scared of death. We saw in season 2 how HARD he tried to get back to Gi-hun with the ammo. But he was so traumatized that he literally broke down. But that does not make Dae-ho a bad guy. Dae-ho wasnât being âselfishâ by choosing to stay in the dormitory. He wasnât being selfish for not wanting to die. He was literally breaking down and having a panic attack.
But the show have Gi-hun turn into a psychopath and hunt him down. And In-ho saw him kill a damn terrified kid.
If the show wanted the audience to see that Gi-hun ânever lost who he really wasâ, then they should have let Gi-hun die in the marble game in season 1 because he refused to trick the old man. But no. Lol. We already saw Gi-hun trick the old man to save his own life (since Gi-hun didnât know who Il-nam was at that time).
*I am NOT blaming Gi-hun for doing what he had to do to survive in that marble game. Iâm just pointing out the plot holes of the show because WE DID SEE GI-HUN DO THINGS THAT ARE MORALLY CORRUPT BEFORE. To survive. It doesnât mean Gi-hun was a bad person. It means Gi-hun was a human just like any of us. Gi-hun was a GOOD PERSON, better than most of us, in fact, but he wasnât a saint and THATâS OKAY.
**Also, no. I am not saying Gi-hun should have yeeted that damn baby off the pillar either. Just that it was a stupid writing decision to begin with to have the damn baby as a plot device or some shit just so Gi-hun could sacrifice himself (when we ALREADY saw how SUICIDAL Gi-hun became) and die in the end.

And what if I told you I think that his character arc in Season 3 was lazy and disappointing?
Credit goes to @rachelamberbleh on TT for this awesome edit!
I figured out how to put it:
The characterization of nearly every character in Season 3 felt weird and bad because all the characters were doing and saying things TO MOVE THE PLOT FORWARD TOWARDS WHERE THE WRITERS WANTED, rather than genuine human behavior or reactions.
Characters said and did what the plot needed of them, rather than the plot being driven by the characters.
