I feel like the narrative definitely failed Zoraal Ja, granted I'm at the level 97 quest.

He can be a villain all he wants, FFXIV is full of them, but I felt like they did him a disservice. Idk if they didn't want to repeat Zenos or Emet Selch, so they left him there?? We are told off the bat he is war hungry and a conqueror and can't gain the throne... but I saw very little of that save for the attack on the capital. His advisor was more power-hungry than him and whispering in his ear.

I wish we, as the WoL, got to know him outside of what Wuk Lamat said about him. We got Koana's perspective. Even Bakool ja ja got a redemption arc (that I felt was unearned), but not Zoraal? He was ultimately jealous and was the resilient son and yet lost to his sister. Did he feel that his father replaced him and adopted 2 children? We get the feeling he has no love for his father and wasn't given it in return. Wuk Lamat is the only one with a family nickname, and lbr Gulool Ja Ja was not so secretly rooting for Wuk Lamat. Why did his father spurn him? I hope the other quests answer that.

And he may have lost to his father BUT koana and Wuk Lamat joined the Scions who are known for saving the world. The WoL alone, defeated Oblivion incarnate, and fist fought Zenos to the death. Zoraal lost because he fought alone, and I wish that was explored more. Why did Koana feel like he had to be in Wuk Lamat's corner more despite all THREE being rivals. He may have agreed in her vision, but he wasn't obligated to help her, and once again, she had the Scions (who were so underutilized).

DID YOU KNOW that sometimes characters lie. out loud to others and internally to themselves, and it'll happen right there on the page. other times they are just flat out wrong and don't know it. oftentimes they don't ever find that out. a sizable portion of any story is decidedly not cold hard fact.

#just sayin' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#(and like yes obviously that might have ended the series so we couldn't go that way etc. but for the sake of argument: )#i mean. *points to ALL OF THAT later in the manga*#the man's not wrong #like. regardless of what you think about him vs. a twelve year old or wiping memories w/o asking questions first etc etc #pragmatically speaking he's very much proven to be Not Wrong lmao #and yes i'm aware that i have a huge bias here #though it's v hard to tell if it's my su//wabe bias; my character archetype bias; my story role/occupational bias; or my antiCoco bias XD #and like. i'm normally not one to promote jumping into actions before asking questions/fully investigating/etc.#but magic of this quality/caliber? is it worth the risk of the magic user potentially breaking out of the restraints #and casting more spells like that? there's no guarantee you'd be able to hold them again #especially if the first time was due to the element of surprise #every moment you take to think about the situation is a moment that you may be setting everyone up for something much worse #also can't really blame the guy once he finds out that co//co was the one who cast the spell #the rumor about her may be just a rumor as far as anyone outside of qi//frey's ate//lier knows #but that's two strikes of forbidden magic closely tied to her #the context -- particularly for someone who doesn't have all the info -- just doesn't look good lmao #withoutwords
