        “  When I talk to the Major General about the matter I will ask her for the building plans as well if that helps. It has been quite long since the last time we required them, I hope they are still here. ” She shrugged but could not think of a reason why they would not, this was probably the safest place in whole Amestris despite its location at the border. The mere thought made her smile and with a slower pace than before the Major started heading down the hallway again. “ Mh, yes sounds like a good suggestion to me.  ”

        Three soldiers on their way halted briefly, saluted and pointed at her companion - asked her if he had arrived just recently. “ Welcome at Fort Briggs. Be careful not to die. ” One of them turned to Kain directly, there was an amused tone in his voice yet not necessarily unfriendly. “ And make sure to look up when walking the battlements. Icicles are everywhere. ”

        It did not take them long to continue their way, Betrayal was glad about it even though she did not voice her thoughts. “ They let appear this place far scarier than it actually is… Anyway would it be possible placing them near the battlements? I believe they are needed there the most. ”  

     “  Ah  thanks,  I  guess.  “

     Gosh this assignment was starting to sound like it’d be the DEATH of him. Bears, ice, mysterious hallways and decks were people disappeared... It made him nervous and Kain was never good at hiding that. Thus he stuck to the Major’s side like glue ( keeping a respectable distance of course ). Be careful not to die, wow, what a great way to welcome someone.

     “  I’ll  have  to  see  what  kind  of  relays  and  tech  that’ll  need  to  be  installed,  but  yes!  That  should  be  possible,  whether  or  not  a  work  around  is  needed  to  get  it  done.  “

     With the next step he took, Fuery’s foot landed on a small patch of ice. In seconds he was on his back with both boots in the air following a startled YELP. It was blatantly obvious that adjusting and fitting in would be a painfully slow process. No doubt he’ll be picked on or PUSHED around, rank didn’t mean much to the soldiers here when it was brand new.

     “  Well...  If  you  like  talking  to  someone  on  the  phone  or  radio,  communications  in  general,  I  matter  quite  a  bit.  “

          it’s impossible not to smile at this; somehow, Kain Fuery often reminded Ed of a tender flower growing among the quicksands of a swamp — with the colonel filling in for the role of swamp monster, very obviously. sipping a bit more of the coffee, he follows in a mix of INTEREST and AMUSEMENT as the circles are drawn and the pieces are organized, not so sure if it is the sergeant not understanding how to properly do it or himself unable to grasp the logic behind such innocent acts. alchemy is a sort of religion, after all… a science, no doubt, perhaps the most noble of all, but a religion no less — and, like all religions, far too easy for the devout to get sucked into, and it’s all he can do, to refuse thinking back on two young brothers playing with chalk in a similar manner, in hope of seeing the smile of a dead mother once more.

          ‘ you made the first step: the circle. in alchemy, the circle represents the flow of energy that we draw in order to perform a transmutation. now you need the equation and arrows, according to what the purpose is. ‘ saying so, he borrows the chalk and uses it to complement the first circle.

     “  The  equation...  Chemistry?  I  kind  of  know  a  little  bit  about  that  but  not  as  much  as  you  for  sure.  Mathematics  isn’t  hard  but  I’m  no  scientist.  Guess  I’d  fall  under  the  umbrellas  of  engineering  and  mechanics.  “

     He removes another piece and puts it into the A circle, swapping it for another. Pencil meets paper and a CHECK is made with a hum before his attention is back on Ed. His tools are set down and the Sergeant leans forward, watching the second circle be completed with raised eyebrows. Two fingers take the corner of his glasses to raise them up. The flow of ENERGY? Maybe he wasn’t understanding it very well, wasn’t stopping Kain from tentatively poking the edge of the fully drawn transmutation circle. He totally didn’t mumble I believe in you radio-fixing circle.

    “  Well,  that  piece  is  used  to  receive  radio  waves  that  fly  through  the  air.  When  they  arrive  at  the  receiver  antennae,  they  make  the  electrons  vibrate  inside  it.  That  creates  an  electric  current  which  recreates  the  original  signal. I  have  a  few  of  those  but  I  want  to  try...  Ah...  Oh  gosh...  “

          crisis averted; good. now Ed could stop clinging to that mug as though his intent was to break it with his bare hand, the flesh one to boot, and much more calmly bring it up to his lips && take a sip. it had become a little bit of an addiction, admittedly… but was it his fault that the bitter black brew was so tasty? this world still had some pleasures in it and he, of all people, could use them. either way, with the sergeant returning to his HANDIWORK, he leaned a bit closer && examined the radio with interest — unable to ignore the fact that this was an operation Winry might enjoy watching, what with shared passion for gears and bolts and cables.

          ‘ it was just basic alchemy. it follows three main steps: first, you must understand the components something is made of, then you break it down to said components, and finally you reassemble them again in whatever way you want. ‘

    “  Understanding  the  chemical  makeup  huh?  You  don’t  even  have  to  know  where  the  pieces  go  or  why  and  you  can  just  fix  it?  Wow,  I  need  to  learn  some  of  that!  “

     It’d make his job so much easier but something told Kain he’d rarely use it. Alchemy for the more DAMAGED units would be nice but everything else could be done with just his bare hands and the right tools. Still, the thought was cool enough to ENTERTAIN for a little bit.

     He picks up a small piece of chalk and draws a circle next to the radio, labeling it with the letter A. Cracked pieces of SIMILAR sizes are placed into the circle before a second one is made. Organization at it’s most simple form, though he does draw one closer to Ed along with a broken part. The child-like curiosity is plastered to Fuery’s face and he can barely contain his EXCITEMENT.

     “  These  units  are  made  of  a  handful  of  materials,  both  conductive  and  not.  Mostly  steel,  but  could  you  show  me  how  you  fix  that?  “

     Kain’s mind was analytical, he worked with complex machines; what he lacked in size and POWER, he made up for in brains. With any luck that’d keep him alive while he had to stay at Briggs ( Team Mustang needed his skill, he couldn’t die now! )

       His words made sense to her; enough to wonder if they had not overlooked a weaker spot within their fort. Of course she would never question the Major General, she had proven her qualities fairly quick after Betrayal had arrived at Briggs for the very first time but even someone like her was able to miss some details. Even though it was scarcely possible. The woman turned around to him, gestured towards the soldier while talking. “ You made a good point, cub. ” Perhaps they should really consider it, Betrayal thought. “ I am sure Major General Armstrong will agree to it too. If there is an opportunity to increase our advantage against our opponents we have to use them. ”

        Why had they not called for someone like him sooner? Many things could have been easier by having access to a network of this kind. But maybe the others had never viewed it as necessary, if Betrayal was honest, it was beyond her knowledge. But she would talk to Olivier about it, it was a good idea after all. “ I fear I know hardly anything about this topic. How many would be appropriate for a fort of this size? What do you think? ”

     “  I’d  need  to  know  the  fort’s  exact  dimensions  and  the  layout  of  each  layer  to  give  you  an  accurate  number  if  there  was  to  be  a  communication  line  on  each  floor.  Critical  points  would  drop  that  to  something  more  manageable  but  that  brings  up  the  point  of  where  and  why.  “

     There she went again, calling him ‘ cub ‘. It didn’t bother him enough to ask why but Kain was curious. He knew he was young and SHORT but was it really necessary? Oh well; new post new mannerisms he’d have to learn and put up with - nothing NEW there. He’ll answer to whatever he is called so as long as it’s not straight up degrading and rude.

     “  I’d  say  start  with  the  problem  decks  and  go  from  there.  The  in-house  lines  are  simple  and  no  one  on  the  outside  tap  them  if  you  lace  the  wire  properly.  “

     I really need to make Fuery a proper promo but it seems like he’s left out so much along with Falman out of the group. Maybe I should move him to a primary finally. I’ll think about for a couple of days. Making new blogs is so tedious!

     An unintentional flick of the wrist had dialed in a random frequency that, at first, only produced static. It was CURIOSITY that willed the young NCO to adjust the radio in an attempt at clearing up the line. He was rewarded with the most spine chilling sound of a HAUNTING voice moaning ( help me ) before silence filled his ears.

     So startled was he, that Kain kept calling out into the void without any kind of a response. Some of the soldiers passing by were concerned, a few even suggested bringing an OFFICER in to figure out what the heck Fuery was doing.

   “  This  is  Master  Sergeant  Kain  Fuery,  do  you  read  me?  I  repeat,  do  you  read  me?  Is  anyone  there?  “

          it was ODD to remember, every now && then, he technically was entitled to a military rank superior to many of the officers at headquarters; a state alchemist was immediately equivalent to a major, after all. while Edward didn’t exactly care for that, then, far more preoccupied with more relevant matters, he’d be lying if he didn’t admit it was AMUSING to a degree to be treated with so much respect and caution — especially when he was also, and by much and more, the youngest soldier of them all. …and the shortest too, yes, which had just provoked the whole little conundrum. one he was trying to get over as best he could without snapping, never mind the visibly forced expression && actual twitching, and good thing he had a coffee mug to cling to and drown his sorrows into.

‘ see… — we can talk of radios, yes. or alchemy, even better. INTERESTING things. the rest doesn’t matter anyway. ‘

     “  Yes  sir,  won’t  happen  again.  “

     It felt like Kain had dodged a BULLET with how relieved he had become. He thought Major Armstrong was scary when upset, Edward far surpassed that in his opinion. Maybe it was because he’s NOT crossed Alex’s path much; some might call that a blessing in disguise. Fuery has managed to remain off of the officer RADAR ( double-edged sword, less trouble but no rank progression ) with relative ease. Returning his hands to the DEVICE in front of him, Kain pried off a panel and set it aside.

     “  Well...  Can  you  tell  me  about  how  you  fixed  my  radio  that  one  time?  That  was  really  cool.  “          What a nerd.

🔪  it was habit , to fall asleep in places where he shouldn’t be asleep. But how else was he going to get some peace and quiet without Roy breathing down his neck. He said he would do the paperwork later , and later meaning putting it off until he couldn’t put it off anymore. So he would sleep , until someone came to get him , which he hopes isn’t anytime soon. But he thought too soon , something hits his boot , and he lifts up his head. 

The ground shakes and he’s jolted awake , forced to sit up and struggle to his knees , slowly , he looks around the desk , putting his weapon away he was so ready to grab if it happened to be an intruder. A grumble when he sees it’s only one of his coworkers.. 

He punches the other lightly , raising a brow at all the stuff that’s dropped on the floor , what was he carrying all that stuff for anyway?

     Damn near each unit he had been carrying lie STREWN about the area in multiple little pieces. Everything was decommissioned, so he wouldn’t be punished, but that didn’t sooth Fuery’s broken heart. Dramatically, like the nerd that he is, the Master Sergeant dropped to his KNEES and grabbed a throat mic ( it was the closest thing he could reach ) and sniffled. All of his life’s recent work, ruined!

     The punch to his shoulder is regarded with a look of that screamed despair. It hadn’t been his INTENTION to turn them all into scrap but that’s what would have to happen now. With what little sign language he knew, Kain used the one for RADIO once, twice, and then his hands dropped to his sides. What a depressing mess for HQ’s resident tech wiz.

     Heaving a heavy sigh Kain rose to his feet so that he could at least lug the more INTACT radios together. He’ll have to find a broom to get the rest and find something else to do with his spare time.

       She had never spent much thought about these things, had never needed them since she was good at finding the right paths in this fort; much to her own surprise since she found herself more often than not lost in the endless hallways of the headquarters in Central City. How often had she been required to ask for the right direction? She had lost count but even one time was already too often to her, she would never admit it openly. Never.

       “ Do you think it will help those soldiers to find their way back? ”, Betrayal asked him, then the tone of her voice changed - lips curled into a grin. “ Major General Armstrong might see it as an extension of the most important law of this place. Only the strongest, most intelligent survive; survival of the fittest. ”

       A low chuckle escaped her lips, her head turned around to throw a gaze at the cub. Was it her intention to scare him? Perhaps, but it was better to be prepared for the worst thing that could happen at this place than believing the north would not claim its victims in its own way. This was not Central City. “ But I will talk about it with the Major General; if Drachma manages to infiltrate the fort it might be useful to have them around. Messages are spreading here quite fast but in some cases not fast enough. ”

     Most intelligent, he was, the strongest... he was not. Fuery’s strength was average physically, however, the strength of his HEART was mighty. Survival of the fittest was a concept he understood but in the military, where NUMBERS counted just as much, could this outpost really afford to thin their ranks? 

     Drachma was a fierce opponent matched by its SIZE and, no doubt, a hefty supply of bodies that made fine soldiers. Quality outmatched quantity up to a POINT / being overwhelmed was the make or break for a skirmish of that magnitude. 

     “  There  are  many  practical  uses  for  a  larger  radio  network  outside  of  navigation.  Communication  is  key  when  directing  attacks  and  counter  offensives.  “
