How the Neanderthal got its name

Once upon a 17th Century, there lived a good Calvinist preacher, teacher, and hymn composer Joachim Neander. You probably know his most famous hymn "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" (German: "Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren") published in virtually every Christian hymnal.

He was such a great man, the German people many decades later decided to name after Neander a whole valley ("thal" in German) near Düsseldorf where he taught, thus "Neanderthal."

Of course, the Valley of Neander (Neanderthal) would later become the place where the first Homo neanderthalensis was identified after discovery in a cave.

John Hanson was the first to take office in 1781, elected by Congress. However, with no executive branch, not serving and not elected under the Articles of Confederation (as they weren’t yet in effect), his position was mostly ceremonial. There were seven more men after him to assume this role before George Washington took office in 1789.

Richard awoke startled in his luxurious room, The grandfather clock struck 5 Am. Richard decided it was time to get up.

He walked over to the window besides his King Sized bed, threw aside the red curtains, pulled the rope and opened the blinds. As he did the white sun shone brightly against the black sky, the sun that never went down, Richard pulled out his journal from underneath his bed and added another tally mark to the 6 that already lay there.

May 14, 1607: Captain John Smith helps to found the first permanent English settlement in the U.S. at Jamestown, Virginia. The trip began on Dec. 20, 1606 with the three small ships, the Discovery, the Susan Constant, and the Godspeed.

Famine, disease and conflict with local Native American tribes in the first two years brought Jamestown to the brink of failure before the arrival of a new group of settlers and supplies in 1610.
