I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome

It's unhinged to assume that someone's taste in fiction equates to what they believe is moral or good, or is something they want to see or experience in real life.
That is a bonkers assumption to make.
I'm tired of humoring people with long arguments about it when the simple fact is it is a totally fucking absurd reach to accuse someone who enjoys something in fiction of being in favor of it in real life.
I'm tired of pretending like this is a legitimate position to hold-- that they should be afraid of fiction's dire influence on a reader's moral decay or that it's a sign of what the author secretly wants for realsies in real life.
Warrior Nun Rewatch S1E1: Blink and You'll Miss It
Inspired by @drizzleoftherain and @maxmayo11's rewatch analyses, thought I'd add a few things I noticed in rewatching the first episode:
Extra Backstory
Ava’s backstory is foregrounded in big ways that are obvious to the viewer and familiar to anyone in the fandom, but there are also hints about Ava that are less obvious. Ava’s wall in the orphanage, revealed in detail during Father Vincent’s investigation, sheds light on her life prior to the orphanage, her life at the orphanage, and the way she views herself. The only book clearly identifiable on her bookshelf is “Cuando muere un mago,” or “When a magician dies,” by Anna Ahman, about a girl who grows up with an abusive and alcoholic father. Ava's father is out of the picture for reasons that are never explained, but this book being a favorite suggests the possibility that there's a reason she never thinks to look for him, and that he never looks for her. There's an abacus and Rubix cube on the shelf, suggesting Ava's interest in science/math is not limited to her interest in Jillian's wheelchair tech. There are at least two items that appear to be friendship bracelets. There's an alien stuffed toy. There are notes wishing Ava a happy birthday, celebrating that Ava and Diego will be “4ever friends,” and encouraging Ava to “keep on rolling.” There’s also a poster of George Orwell’s 1984, suggesting that Ava may find something compelling and identifiable in a story about doomed resistance against an all-seeing tyrant. Also present on the wall are a picture of Jillian Salvius’ neural-linked wheelchair and several pictures of nature.
An Extra "Love Interest"
Many watchers will note that Ava’s inner monologue is open to the idea of exploring romance without regard for gender even from the very first episode, and the suggestive chemistry between Mary and Shannon, but how many people noticed Ava getting hit on by a woman at the bar where Ava dances for the first time? The woman is not the center of the shot, but visibly eyes Ava appreciatively while she dances and then offers Ava some of her drink.
Lore Drop
For people interested in the lore of the show, there’s an interesting tarask moment and a piece of potential foreshadowing. The tarasks are presented, in this season at least, as pursuing the Halo. Despite that, the tarask in this episode appears at the body of a former Halobearer, instead of in the presence of the current Halobearer, as they do in every other appearance in season 1, and ~24 hours after the Halo was exposed (i.e., outside of a human body). This is interspersed with a scene in which Vincent is at a bar telling the bartender about the world, including about different types of demons. Here, and in the next episode, Vincent is oddly knowledgeable about tarasks, given that one hasn’t been seen in over a century (or perhaps not so oddly, given how the season ends). I have a LOT of thoughts about tarasks, which informed my post-canon fic In The Eyes Of A Child, and I'll probably do a whole separate post pulling together their lore across the whole extent of the show.
