WEEKLY CHALLENGE #14
What is Earth Science?
Earth science is a study of the whole earth. It studies on where the began and how it changes over time. It does only study just that. Earth science is a very broad subject because it does not only study on rocks. It also studies on our environment. It studies on the different climates and weathers. It studies where we originated from. It also studies the bodies of water and how it has been contaminated. It discusses the effects of human activities and on how to lessen them. Basically, for me, Earth Science is not just about the geography of the Earth or it geological features instead it tackles everything that has happened here on Earth whether it may be positive or negative. It just tackles the Earth itself.

Weekly Challenge #12
The worst weather experience that I have encountered is the typhoon Yolanda because it lasted for days and electricity was out for more than a week. Communication was out because all signals were lost because of the typhoon’s strong wind blowing. We could not even get out of the house because when we tried it we only got blown by the strong wind. Because of the lost of communication, we were worried of what had happened in the province because my grandfather lives there and we can’t communicate and we cannot get out of the house. When the typhoon stopped, we immediately went to the province to check if my my grandfather and my great grandparents were okay. Fortunately, they were okay and the house never got brought down by the typhoon since it was located below the mountains and we were lucky enough that there was no land slides. After checking them out, we also went to some of our relatives in Bogo and when we were driving, we saw houses that got brought down because of it. We took pity on them because a lot of them has no houses and they have no place to sleep because even the basketball gym where they were supposed to stay has no roof and when we heard the news from the radio a lot pf people in Leyte were found dead. All I can say is that I hope it won’t happen again because I don’t want to hear news about dead people.
Structural Analysis Questions for Earthquake Proof Building:
A.) During construction, how did you test the strength and stability of your structure?
We tested the strength and stability of our building through putting weight on each floor to see if it could handle the weight and then we shake it if the weight would fall.
B.) During construction, what strategies did you use to strengthen the weaker areas? Why?
We spared 8 straws so that we can use them to support the weaker areas.
C.) What are the strongest part/s of your building? Why?
The strongest part of the building is the upper half because the distances of the posts are not too wide and it could withstand the weight and we used some stronger straws.
D.) What are the weakest part/s of your building? Why?
The weakest part of the building is the lower half because the distances of the posts are too wide that it has a high possibility of collapsing.
E.) Where did you use the strings in your structure? Why?
We used the strings as the floor so that when the we put on the weight and the simulator starts shaking it the floor would only sway.
F.) Where did you use the pins in your structure? Why?
We used the pins in connecting the 8 straws that we spared because paper clips can’t hold them for too long and it might collapse.
G.) If you had 5 more straws, where would you add them? Why?
We will add the 5 straws as a support in the lower part of the posts so that it could stand more weight and it will lessen the probability of the building for collapsing.
Weekly Challenge #9
This challenge is about a region that contains ridges, valleys, springs, rivers, wells, and small towns. There are also several farms, a dairy, and a number of industrial sites. The water in the region is contaminated and we are asked to examine what polluted the water and which areas are contaminated. So here are my investigations:
First and foremost, the structure of the region is a ridge/valley like. It has a main river which the direction of it’s water flow from right to left and it started from the top passing through the middle as it flows, where the 4 springs are located, until it reaches the bottom part of the valley, as what as the clues are pointing. Since the river started from the top, it is obvious that as the water flows downward, it brings waste or any toxic materials from the factories that it passes by, which caused the river to be polluted.
Cornhead Coal Mine is one of the polluters of the river. It because Cornhead Coal Mine mines coal which it has lots of coals in the area. Also there was a rumor that one of the mines had some sort of chemical spill however it was not reported. The activity at the mines and power plant also contributed to the pollution of the water because it has caused fine coal dust, which is blown around by the wind and washed into the river flow along the valley.
But not only that, the wells at the bottom part are also contaminated. Specifically wells D, E, H, I, M, and N. It is because the wells D and H are located beside a factory (Metal Works). Metals, of course can pollute the water because of its toxic materials. For E, M, and I the spring 1 polluted them because spring 1 was contaminated already and the tables also showed that the said wells are contaminated.
So yes, the two main sources of contamination in the river are the Cornhead Coal Mine and the Metal Works.
The lower parts of the valley are most likely aquifers because they are composed of Basin Fill which aquifers are also composed of. And wells G, K, L, N, O, and P will remain free from contamination.
Weekly Challenge #10
While watching the documentary entitled “racing extinction”, we were asked to find the one thing to change our lifestyle. That ONE thing is eating vegetables every weekend. This is to limit my consumption of meat because I was struck of what the documentary has showed to me. Eating vegetables is the ONE thing to change my lifestyle and it is not just to prevent extinction but also to make me healthy.
Weekly Challenge #8
At school, our class was asked by our teacher to limit our water consumption during our bath time for three days. After that we answer the following questions given.
How does it feel to have your water consumption limited to a minimal amount?
At first, I thought that it would be kinda impossible since our teacher said that we limit our scoops of water to 15 because I always end up using more than 15 scoops of water while taking a bath but I was wrong. It only took me 9-10 scoops of water every time I take a bath. It was already my usual scoops and I felt relieved because I wasn’t wasting water.
Is this something you can do long-term?
YES!!! This is something I can do long-term because as what I’ve said at the previous question that my usual scoops of water while taking a bath is minimum of 15 scoops.
In the future, with the amount of shortages we have when it comes to water, limiting your water consumption may be inevitable. What are your thoughts on this?
Today, we are already experiencing water shortages so if we continue to waste more water, we will be experiencing drought. What I want to say is that we should limit our water consumption now, like right now, because if we don’t, we will be facing a tragedy in the near future.
Last August 6 2016 we supported Cebu Farmer’s Market by witnessing their cooking demo and buying their products at Vibo Place, Escario St., Cebu City.
Luckily, Chef Tim, one of the three chefs participating in the demo, agreed to take a selfie with me before the demo started.
Weekly challenge #6
Your wealthy uncle gives you a sizeable piece of land (~20 hectares). Upon checking, you realized that it had the ff. features:
1) It is highly arable (good for agriculture)
2) It is rich in mineral
3) It is found in a prime area (good for commercial use)
4) It has a fresh, clean river running through it.
What will you do with the land?
Since it is a 20-hectare land and it is highly arable which is good for agriculture. I will use the 4 hectares to plant crops and other vegetation. Since it has clean river, I will use another 4 hectares to make a fishpond and raise fishes, specifically Tilapia. How will I do that? I will simply create a path for the river to go to the pond and make another path for the river so that it can benefit the other things that I will do to my 20-hectare land. I will use another 4 hectares of my land to raise poultry, goats, cows, and other animals that can be used for commercial purposes. I will only a hectare of land for mining. I will only have to limit mining activities on my land so that I can prevent soil erosion. If I won’t limit such activity, it can affect the other things that I did for my land especially the crops and the fishes. When that happens, crops and fishes will die and there will no food for us to give and sell to the market. I will also build a house so that we can live there whenever we need to ease our minds and when vacation starts. In order for the crops, fishes, pigs, cows and many more to progress and grow, I will hire farmers, expert farmers to be specific, so that we can produce products and sell it to the market. Farmers can build there own houses too so that they won’t have the need to go back to their houses every night. 2 hectares of land will be used for the farmers’ houses. The remaining 5 hectares will be used as a park and other recreational activities. I will create a park so that children and their families can enjoy and have fun. Of course, I will have to make a fence or a boundary to separate the farm and the park. And that is my plan; if ever my uncle gives me a 20-hectare land.
Weekly Challenge #5: Fictional Mineral Challenge
Name of mineral: Agronitite
Color: Gray
Location: Bahamas
Agronitite is a rare type of mineral that located in the deep parts of the forests in Bahamas. This mineral is impregnable and it is 4 times harder than the diamond. It is composed of iron and oxygen. Basically, this mineral is magnetic. It does not effervesce. This mineral cleaves and forms into rhombs. Because of it’s hardness, this mineral is way better than captain america’s shield and Wakanda’s vibranium. It absorbs a vibrations as well as kinetic energy. While the vibranium has a certain limitations in absorbing energy, the agronitite has no limitations and the more it absorbs, the more it gets tougher. This will strengthen the weapons of the military forces, however, they can only find few of this in Bahamas because as what I’ve said it is rare. The only thing they can do if they found this mineral is examine it and try to replicate it.

Let’s take a look at this rock... This rock has rough texture that kind of explains what my life is right now.
While comparing this rock, I can see myself in it. Why? It is because this rock is hard and tough but this rock can also be broken when calamities occur. When certain problems occur and when I can’t handle these problems by myself anymore, I can also be broken like this rock that is why I can see myself in this rock.
My thoughts about my first month in senior high
#Sci01 #BlckN
In these past weeks I have observed the things that I have done to the four spheres of the earth (atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, & biosphere). There were some good and bad stuff that I did to the four spheres. Those good stuffs that I did were taking care of animals by feeding them because it is my responsibility as a human to take good care of our Lord’s creations. I also conserve energy especially the water because during the day until noon our house will ran out of water so I have to use little water as much as possible. I also commute in going to school and at home in order not to cause more pollution to the earth. I also help in making our village clean so that it will become a nice place to live in. Aside from the good stuffs I did, there are also bad stuffs including throwing garbage anywhere. I have also consumed a lot of electrical energy because of using computer. In order to make the world a wonderful place, I need to lessen what I have done badly to our mother nature. I should not litter around and should dispose the garbage properly. I should conserve electrical energy so that pollution and greenhouse gases will lessen. I should go out more and play to exercise my body so that I will be healthy and can become a role model to those who are younger than me especially to my young siblings so that they will follow me.
