Reminiscing about the Arctic today as I hang these very flags on my bedroom wall. This photo was taken to celebrate crossing North of the 70th parallel on the Colville River after more than 20 days canoeing across Alaska's North Slope in June and July 2014.

In 2005 I spent my first summer living and working as a canoe outfitter on the Gunflint Trail, in the heart of the #BWCA wilderness. I vividly remember gazing for hours at a wall-sized map while scrubbing pots and pans, daydreaming and planning my next trip through the maze of lakes and rivers along the border. It blew my mind to think that I could paddle from my back door all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Needless to say, that summer (and the next three) made for one of the most formative experiences of my life. Which is why I am so proud to volunteer with the fine folks at @savethebwca who work so hard every day to protect my favorite place on earth from dangerous mining proposals. You can help too. Growing up living and sailing on the Great Lakes instilled me with a healthy respect for the power of nature. The lakes are beautiful, but deeply cold, and storms can come out of nowhere. Stories of accidents and shipwrecks loom in the collective memory of all from the region. I'd like to take a moment to remember the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, 40 years ago today. Late October in canoe country means potential for variable weather as fall transitions into winter. A couple of cold, rainy days made for lots of tent time, but fortunately @freemanexplore kept us warm and dry in their @seekoutside tipi - complete with a collapsible titanium wood stove.
I'm feeling incredibly humbled and grateful after spending the last five days canoeing, camping, and filming in the BWCA Wilderness with my friends @freemanexplore. Amy and Dave are currently on day 39 of their Year in the Wilderness: an expedition to celebrate and protect our nation's most popular wilderness area from the threat of sulfide-ore mining proposals along it's southern edge. Although the weather was cold, wet, and windy much of the time, @mattvanbiene and I were treated to an incredibly comfortable stay in the Freeman's woodstove-heated tipi. I already can't wait for our next shoot this winter! #savethebwca

White Iron Lake, home to Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, falls along the path of pollution from the proposed Twin Metals sulfide-ore copper mining project. Just downstream from here lies the 1.1 million acre Boundary Waters Wilderness, where we are heading bright and early tomorrow morning to begin shooting with @freemanexplore - now one month into their Year in the Wilderness. #savethebwca (at Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge)

Cheers to my good friend Dave Freeman - today is his birthday! I'm happy to know he is spending it in his favorite place on earth, the BWCA Wilderness. Dave and his wife Amy entered the Boundary Waters last Wednesday to begin a year long trip by canoe and dogsled, bearing witness to the changing of the seasons in this iconic and threatened national treasure. I recall the very day during the Paddle to DC expedition when Dave mentioned his idea to live in the BWCA for a whole year. It's great to see it finally happening! #savethebwca @freemanexplore @savethebwca
Today was a pretty damn good day in the office. I'm up in South Lake Tahoe for the @patagonia Tools for Grassroots Activists Conference - learning, sharing, and getting inspired with some of the best environmental activists in the world. So far it's been an action packed couple of days. Between learning how I can better protect the Boundary Waters and producing films for @patagonia to share what we're learning here with the greater environmental community, I'm exhausted but so incredibly stoked to be a part of this event. And I'm even more excited to use everything I've learned in my next film project. To quote one of our presenters, Kai Anderson, "Know your history; dare to create new history". (at Fallen Leaf Lake)
