LJW vs. LJW, anyone?
woohoo! I'm back with another categorization of the lovely roles by LJW. Some of these may fit more than the others, but I had a grand time making it.
for the record, i don't think han tae-oh would be "hated" per say, but i do feel he was envied a LOT more than he realized.
saeng-gang, after the first time in the realm of GWI: Oh, thank the gods we survived. gu-cheon: THANK the GODS? The gods have nothing to do with this, thank ME!
gu-cheon: Stop it! I promised the king you wouldn't do anything dangerous! saeng-gang, holding a grenade: I can't believe you would just lie to my father like that
driving lessons
gu-cheon: So. You're driving and you see the Queen Dowager and the King walk down the street. What do you hit? saeng-gang: You wait until both of them are lined up and hit them at the same time, of course. gu-cheon: gu-cheon, clearly exhausted: The brakes, saeng-gang. You hit the brakes.
i'm not going to lie, it always amused me how gu-cheon has lived a life full of solitude and suffering, is full of attitude, yet was always giving saeng-gang shit for scowling all the time. like, both their lives are always in danger and there's clearly no reason to smile, but his pessimistic ass wanted her to be smiling lmao.
"You look ugly when you frown." UNPROVOKED????
saeng-gang, trying her best: i am sending good vibes your way. it's coming, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. gu-cheon: gu-cheon: that's the most threatening way i've ever been cheered up.
the king: 這都是你的錯! gu-cheon: I know, I know. the king: *surprised* You speak Chinese? gu-cheon: No. I just know the phrase "this is all your fault" in every language.
gu-cheon: So, I got banned from the palace because i'm apparently "reckless" and a "liability" and "gu-cheon" gu-cheon: The last one's just my name, but you should hear how the king says it.
the king: Look. I don't want gu-cheon to die. You don't want gu-cheon to die. Let's work together to make sure gu-cheon doesn't die. saeng-gang: fantastic plan my lord, but have you ever fucking met gu-cheon?
gu-cheon: When I get murdered, can you make sure I become an unsolved case? saeng-gang: What? gu-cheon: I want to be on BuzzFeed Unsolved. saeng-gang: I'm sorry, can we go back to the part where you said "when I get murdered?"
oddly sentimental, but every time i feel sad a drama or a book has ended, i like to remind myself that in some universe, their story continues, while our lives go on in the "real world" as well
Who knows, naksu could be surfing right now on lake gyeongcheongdaeho to charli xcx's speed drive and hong rang didn't die, he just faked his death, got better and got hitched to jae-yi. jang uk has an expensive gucci sunglass collection that is mostly used by naksu anyways, and gyeonu, seong-ah and jiho are having the time of their lives with college and spirit work. maybe sometime in the future gu-cheon could even meet the head over heels crew. who knows?
i would be SO happy if there were a crossover fanfic of jang uk/naksu running into gu-cheon/saeng-gang while doing their ghostbusters activities.
it just makes sense, doesn't it? plus i can already imagine the hilarious interactions between both duos, especially since gu-cheon and saeng-gang are still stuck in a "will they, wont they" dynamic, while uk and yeong are happily married. they'd find it hilarious.
plus, imagine the bonding moments? gu-cheon and naksu being used as pawns for a bigger game, having immense power, but a heavy cost for said power, orphaned at a young age and having no one but themselves to rely on until they met their partners.
saeng gang and uk's privileged but crazy childhood after being neglected by their birth parents and also not being able to truly trust people. they're both very clever and resourceful, not to mention a snarky attitude which we all love.
gu-cheon and jang uk may initially butt heads (especially given both their prickly attitudes) but they'd bond over the love they share for saeng-gang and naksu respectively, and the fact that they'd protect them at any cost. (they're also the ragebaiters in their respective relationships so yeah)
saeng-gang and naksu being able to have girl talk moments and bonding over their life experiences of being used and abused for the benefit of others, but still remaining strong and coming out on top (they'd also DEFINITELY be like, "yeah our guys are hella annoying sometimes, but we adore them anyways." )
anyways these are just my thoughts. tell me what you all think!
AOS is by far the best fantasy drama i've ever seen, but the east palace comes pretty damn close NGL.
I also found it really funny how both our main couples essentially leave their old environment behind and go travelling the world together, up to their new ghost hunting shenanigans. You have jang uk and naksu hunting jinyowon relics, then gu cheon and saeng-gang doing god knows what but something DEFINITELY spirit related.
absolute 10/10.
What are you doing? I am checking if the spirit of the Crown Prince has secretly clung to you.
THE EAST PALACE 동궁 (2026) dir. Choi Jung Kyu
The East Palace being an eight episode long horror/suspense drama with romance nowhere in the genres, and I’m still seeing so many people downright furious that the main pair didn’t end up being romantically involved/that it wasn’t sexier between them.
Like I’m going to be totally honest, straight people have a million and one super romantic Kdramas to watch. It’s nice that there’s an occasional story where we have a male and female lead that are ride or die, but their relationship can interpreted as platonic or romantic, depending on your preference. Even better that they’re the same age range, don’t have a pre-existing familial relationship, etc.
Romantic love exists, but so does friendship. I enjoyed that you can take it whichever way you wish. When would they even have time to realize they’re in love anyway? They only had eight episodes to save the day!
i've returned! (for awhile anyway) and i have to say, the east palace was a SOLID 10/10 drama. no notes. and I truly haven't enjoyed a drama this much since weak hero class ngl.
