We did it!!! I honestly didn’t think we would but here we are, and it isn’t September yet. These last 4 birds were tough, I was having a bad art day yesterday and had to restart the teal and witch up the order a bit. The Pheasant also took significantly longer than 20 minutes. Still, I’m quite chuffed I managed all 31 birds in time.

Isn’t it funny how sometimes the drawings you spend longer on don’t turn out as well as the ones you just throw at the page. We’ll just say the sunbird was having a bad hair day.

Do you guys think the time-lapse is too fast? I figure  30 seconds is the most I can ask before people keep scrolling, but this speed makes me feel motion sick.

A little happier with this page. Still not what I would consider my usual standard but for 20 minute sketches I’m okay with it. I think I need to focus more on the silhouette if I want the birds to be recognisable.

Hmmm. Am I particularly pleased with or proud of this page? No, not really. But I did the dang thing and I’m proud of that.

Even speeding through the sketches and trying my gosh dang hardest to keep each to 20 minutes, I still found my time creeping up. I got through fewer birds this session than last. I’ll work on that.

Avian August days 1 to 6.

So with half the month gone it seemed like a good time to make a start on AviAug 🙃. Speed running it this year given what a limited commodity Time has become.

I usually take a minimum of 2 hours to finish a drawing but with speed in mind, I gave each of these birds about 20 minutes. They’re clearly not up to my finished drawing standard but I’m a little shocked at how small the gap between sketch and complete illustration is, given the difference in time invested. Maybe I need to rethink my process. Maybe I need to go home and rethink my life…. Wanna buys some death sticks? (If you caught that reference you get 6 knowing smirks).

Oh I totally forgot to post this here. I’ve been neglecting the tumblr of late.

Something quick for this month. I found an old leather working kit for a chequebook cover in the back of my closet and adapted the suggested cover design from it because I have neither the time, nor brain power to do anything more creative. That seems to be a running theme of late. I had hopes to participate in Avian August again this year but I can’t even kid myself into thinking I’ll have the time for it, as I tried to do for Mythical May. Hopefully I manage at least a couple of bird drawings.

Not quite what I envisioned I’m afraid, but it’ll do.

At least I learned to never again create a design with so many circles. Fortunately I only have to spend one more week looking at my wobbly lines and imperfect angles.
