summary: in which luke meets his daughter's boyfriend for the first time, although to his surprise he already knows him, and well.
a/n: i'm so sorry this took me so long to publish anon, i've been relatively busy & have started to write the backstory for my new au series. i hope you enjoy! <3

to say luke was keen to meet your daughter's new boyfriend, would be a complete and total lie, a fabrication. luke was overly protective of sophie, knowing clearly the intention of most teenage boys. he didn't want to see his firstborn, baby girl get hurt. therefore the idea of sophie dating was simply unfathomable, it was not something he was looking forward to.
most of the time sophie shrugged her father's overprotectiveness off, adhering to his rules and staying safe, however her father's boundaries surrounding dating had to be flexible for family friends, right?
ever since luke and ethan had left michigan and played alongside each other in the nhl for the devils, the pair had become inseparable. this meant that you had quickly become close with ethan's wife claire, and after coincidentally falling pregnant around similar months within the same year, it was inevitable that your two families would become close family friends.
when sophie had told luke that she was inviting over her new boyfriend to join family dinner, mentioning to him that he already knew her boyfriend, luke had taken on a new responsibility - to answer the door before her.
luke wanted to ensure that sophie's new boyfriend was able to cut it on his own without her coaching him through every step of this new dynamic. it was no surprise that when the familiar, almost deafening sound of the doorbell rang five minutes ahead of your daughter's boyfriends expected arrival time, luke sprang into action.
"i've got it!" he called, his voice trailing up the stairs to where sophie had been occupied in the bathroom. her hair straightener mindlessly sliding through her hair in an attempt to settle the uncontrollable curls she had undoubtedly received from her father.
"no, don't you dare dad, i'll get it!"
"no, no, its fine" luke insisted, rushing down the hallway before reaching the front door. he twists the doorknob and forcefully swings the front door open as anticipation runs it's course throughout his body.
luke's heart rate begins to slow however and his eyebrows furrow in confusion as his eyes land on the familiar figure standing on the other side of the front door.
nick, ethan's son stood on the front steps of the hughes house. luke watches on as he nervously shifts his weight around, "hi luke, how are you?"
nick tries his hardest to dissect the meaning behind luke's facial features, however it's merely a failed attempt.
"why did you ring the doorbell nick? just go through the side entrance like normal" luke stated simply, as if it was obvious. it wasn't strange for the eldest edwards to accompany the family for dinner, and so luke was completely oblivious to the point of nick's arrival. he held the door open urging for nick to follow and he trails closely behind him in suit, unsure of what to do or say.
"sophie's new boyfriend is coming for dinner tonight, you're free to join us if you like, it would be good to have another set of eyes on the guy, but it might also be a little awkward".
"uh..yeah.." nick trailed off, praying that sophie would soon make her way down the stairs. "i was...well i am, going to stay, i think".
nick hears the light patter of footsteps down the stairs and relief begins to immediately overwhelm him, however its merely shortlived when his eyes land on you. your gaze switches back and forth between your husband and nick, before a small, knowing smile covers your face. "hello nick, how are you going?", you greet the teenage boy politely.
"i'm well thank you y/n, how are you?"
"i'm good thank you honey, how's mom and dad?" you ask, feigning innocence to the current situation which had unfolded before you. although sophie hadn't discretely told you about her new relationship, you still knew. you weren't a stranger to the stolen glances constantly shared between the two teenagers, or the constant excuse of doing homework together.
"they've been well". nick sends you a warm smile in response, he had always been grateful of how welcoming you were with him.
"babe can you grab another plate for nick please, he's going to be joining us for dinner" luke asks.
"of course"
you watched in slight amusement as nick stares at luke in bewilderment, as if he had grown a third head and a small chuckle escapes your lips, your husband was completely oblivious.
luke walks off into the kitchen, searching through the drawers of cutlery before grabbing another set of a knife and fork to reset the dinner table with. nick begins to make his way up the stairs, in search of finding sophie.
he hears the soft hum of taylor swift sound from the bathroom and he immediately makes his way over, slowly opening the door into the bathroom. the slight creak of the door sounding is enough to stir sophie's attention away from the task at hand, and her eyes widen immediately at the sight of her boyfriend standing before her.
nick softly closes the bathroom door behind him before holding out his arms as she throws herself at him. “hey,” she giggles, pressing a loving kiss to his lips, “how’d you survive?”
nick sighs softly, "well, he seems to think that you’re bringing someone else home". sophie's eyebrows raise in response.
“you didn’t tell him that you were my boyfriend?”
“well...”
sophie heaves a soft sigh, before grabbing her boyfriend’s hand and pulling him along with her down the flight of stairs. luke was in the middle of setting down the additional cutlery when the young couple found themselves walking into the dining room, hand in hand.
as he hears the light pad of footsteps sound luke's attention his drawn away from the dinner table and he looks up, briefly smiling at his daughter and nick. his smile however, was quickly replaced by shock, his mouth falling agape slightly as he catches sight of their intertwined hands. luke straightens himself up, glancing erratically back and forth between nick and sophie.
“you...you’re dating my daughter...edwards?” the question fell hesitantly from luke's mouth, and you watch on in the background as you notice nick's eyes widen in fear. you make a mental note to apologise profusely to the poor boy later on for your husbands dramatics.
“yes, we’re dating dad,” sophie responded, “we have been for four months now." luke's mouth falls open even wider, "does eddy know, y/n did you know about this?"
"i wasn't told, but it was pretty hard to miss" you smile softly, walking over towards the dining room table to place the bowl of salad down. "this is some kind of joke, right?” luke states, trying to laugh it off, however to his dismay sophie and nick's expressions don't change, they don't even falter.
“right?” he repeats himself, clearly still in shock.
you're about to speak up before sophie beats you to it. “no, it’s not a joke dad,” she replies calmly. “nick is my boyfriend, we’re dating."
luke places his hands on either sides of his hip and his gaze continues to switch erratically between them both, "and eddy knows about this?"
nick nods his head softly, "i didn't tell him, i think dad just figured it out". luke nods his head in response before walking closer towards the couple, "just please use protection, and we won't have a problem".
sophie throws her head back into her hands, groaning in embarrassment and a small smile fights it's way on to nick's features, before he nods his head in agreement, "of course".
luke goes to head into the kitchen before turning around to face the young couple once more, "oh and edwards?"
nick nods his head softly.
"i'm glad it's you, makes meeting the boyfriend a lot easier". you watch as nick sighs in relief, and the four of you break out into a small fit of laughter.
that was luke's way of approving him.
luke walks towards you in the kitchen placing his hands on either sides of your waist, "and that's the last time i ever believe the 'he's just a friend' excuse". you roll your eyes in response and playfully slap his chest, "isn't that the exact same excuse we used to use?"
a smile graces his lips, "and look where that got us".

Luke’s biggest fear was his family not liking you, more so his brothers. You’ve talked to his parents over the phone and met them at his games countless times.
However when it came to his brothers it was just little hi’s shared here and there when he’s on FaceTime.
He likes to think that you’d get along with them, just like you did with his father. Who scared you at first but welcomed you with open arms.
So when he invited you to stay with him over the summer it made him worry. He gave them a stern talking to about how to act around you. The two of them not seeing what he’s so worried about.
When you sent him the text saying you were outside he basically burst out the door, his brothers following him at a slower speed.
He pulls into a hug, “Don’t let them scare you.”
You laugh hugging him back.
Pulling away you are met with Quinn and Jack.
“I’ll get your bags.” Luke tells you
Jack watches as his little brother walks to the trunk.
Quinn sticks his hand out to you, “It’s nice to finally meet you.”
You shake his hand, “Likewise.”
Jack looks at you then to Luke, “Hey why don’t we show you around while Luke gets the rest of your stuff.”
You look over to Luke, silently asking if it was okay.
He gives his brothers a weird look but answers, “It’s okay you can go, I got this.”
Jack puts an arm around your shoulders, “Great, maybe we should start by showing you Luke’s famous hockey fails.”
Quinn shakes his head but follows.

It was honestly going better than Luke expected, he didn’t think they’d get along with you so fast.
But as the week went on the less time he got with you and the more irritated he got with his brothers. It’s like they were taking you away from him.
Everything they did they wanted you to do with them. From wake surfing to just setting the table for dinner.
Luke wanted to talk to you about it but he didn’t know how to bring it up, it looked like you were having fun and he didn’t want to ruin that.

When Luke got up this morning he was expecting you to be right by his side, except you were no where to be seen.
Slipping on some random shirt that he found, he goes to find you. Down the hall and into the kitchen he finds you… and his brothers.
The three of you were sat at the table, you’re leaning in close to Quinn to watch something off his phone.
Luke grumbles to himself before making his presence known.
The three of your heads snap in his direction and as he clears his throat.
“Morning.” He says walking over to the fridge.
“Morning.” You three reply
Jack picks up his phone, “Hey, Z’s coming over later.”
Great another person Luke has to worry about stealing you away.
Making himself a bowl of cereal he sits across from you at the table.
“Who’s Z?” You question
“Oh it’s Trevor, remember the guy I was telling you about.” Jack answers
You nod, “Oh, yeah, okay.”
Jack stands up to put his bowl away, “We’ll probably go boarding when he gets here. You guys wanna come?”
“I’m down, Luke?” You ask looking at him.
He shrugs, “Yeah, sure.”
His voice carries a slight attitude, one that everyone notices.
Quinn looks at you then to Luke, “Well I’m going to get ready.”
He picks his things up and leaves you two alone.
You scrunch your brows, “Are you okay?”
He dismissively waves his spoon, “Yeah, I’m fine.”

Trevor spots you outside talking to Ellen, “Is that your little girlfriend Lukey?”
Felt like you were more his brothers girlfriend than his lately.
However he nods, “Yeah.”
“I honestly don’t know how he bagged her.” Jack jokes but to Luke it’s not that funny.
“She’s honestly cooler than you, Luke.” Quinn chimes with a chuckle.
“So she’s got the stamp of approval from you two?” Trevor asks
“Oh, yeah.” Quinn answers
“For sure.” Jack says
Hearing that his brothers liked you that much wasn’t as comforting as he thought it would.

Now being on the boat made him feel even worse. The first couple of times you were on you had been been in your clothes but now you’re in bathing suit.
He was counting the seconds that went by every time one of them looked at you.
The jealousy was eating at him, whether it be you laughing at one of their jokes or them helping you on and off the board instead of him. Everything they did and said just bothered him.
When you sat down he was quick to sit next to you, pulling you close to him. He leans back into the seat, letting you lay on him.
You shields your eyes from the sun as you look up and smile at him.
Looking down at you he feelings of jealousy are subsided. Until he hears Quinn call your name.
“You wanna another go before Jack takes over?” Quinn asks pulling the line back in.
You go to sit up but are pulled back down by Luke.
“She’s good.” Luke answers
You and the boys all give him a weird look that he brushes off.
“I’m fine, go at it.” You tell them

Dinner rolls around and when everyone goes to sit down. Luke goes out of his way to make sure you sit down at the end of the table with him next to you.
He wouldn’t even let his mom sit next to you.
After dinner he sat on the couch with you letting his arm rest around your shoulders.
When everyone else comes into the living he basically pulls you on top of him. Wanting you to be closer to him than anyone else.
You honestly don’t mind it, you’ve always liked being close to him.

Waking up the next morning you could barely move. Luke’s body acting like a blanket, fully covering yours.
You try to push him off to no avail, but you know he’s awake. You can feel and hear him as he tries not to laugh.
You brush his hair out of his face, “Can you get off of me?”
He groans flips the two of you over, so that you’re now on top of him.
“Better?” He asks smiling to himself.
You roll your eyes at him and try to sit up.
He tightens his grip on you, “No, don’t leave, not yet.”
You reach over to his nightstand checking your phone.
“It’s nine o’clock.” You inform him
He kisses your cheek, “Okay, and your point is?”

An hour and a half later he finally lets you go.
However an idea pops into his head to keep you away from the boys, letting him spend more time with you.
He grabs your hand pulling you to stand in front on him.
“You wanna go on a walk?” He asks playing with your hands, “We could go get donuts or something.”
You give him a confused look, “You never wanted to go on walks.”
“Because I was always tired.” He claims
You laugh softly placing your hands on his face, “Oh so you’re no longer tired?”
He sets his hands on your waist, “Nope, so what do you say? You wanna go?”
You kiss him softly making him smile.
“Sure pretty boy.”

Luke hands you one of his AirPods, placing the other in his ear.
He throws his arm around you, shaking you with word he sings.
“Cause when I hear your name I can not stop cheesing. I love you so much that my heart stops beating when you're leaving. And I'm grieving and my heart starts bleeding. Life without you has no goddamn meaning.”
“Please stop shaking me.” You plead trying to steady yourself.

Your short walk to get donuts turned into a two hour walk around town. By the time you got back no one was home besides his parents.
Ellen’s voice greets you as you walk through the door, “Hey guys! Where have you been?”
Luke takes your hand, pulling you over to the couch with him.
“We went for a walk and got donuts.” He answers plopping down on the couch gently pulling you down with him.
“And you didn’t bring me one?” She jokingly asks
The both of you let out small laughs telling her that you’ll bring her one the next time you go.
Jim walks in from the back door and gives you two a confused look, “I thought you two went with the boys?”
You two share the same look of confusion.
“Where did they go?” You question
He rubs his forehead trying to think, “Um… To get stuff for the bonfire tonight.”

As the day went on Luke was still attached to you, everywhere you went he was not far behind. It was only a matter of time before he had to actually leave alone for longer than a minute.
And that time has come.
Jim asked him to come inside and help him something. He was reluctant to leave you outside with them but couldn’t say no to his dad.
So now you sit outside with his brothers and their friends.
His brothers take notice in his absence and move to sit next to you.
Jack nudges your shoulder with his, “What’s up Luke?”
You shrug, not too sure yourself, “I don’t know.”
“It’s like he’s afraid to leave you alone.” Quinn comments
“Maybe he sees us as competition.” Jack snickers making you and Quinn laugh.
“Competition?” You ask
You hear the door open and close making you all turn your heads to see Luke walking over with a not so happy look on his face.
Jack and Quinn share a quick look and nod.
Quinn leans into you and whispers, “Watch.”
Watch what, you ask yourself.
Jack looks up to Luke from where he’s sitting and smiles, “Hey man, hope you don’t mind that I took your spot.”
Luke gives him a tight lipped smile, “It’s fine.”
He looks over to you, giving you a more relaxed smile, “Can you help me get the stuff for s’mores?”
“I’ll help you moose.” Quinn says getting up from his seat.
Luke snaps his head over to him, “Huh?”
He pats his shoulder, “Come on.”
Luke looks between you and Jack before slowly following Quinn.
You turn in your seat, “What are you doing?”
“Being a big brother.” He answers with a smile.
“Well please keep me out of your big brother activities.” You tell him
“Where’s the fun in that?” He asks with a light chuckle.
He takes a quick look around before scooting closer to you and asks, “Do you like my brother?”
“No, I hate him.” You answer sarcastically
“Because of that I’m committing to the bit.” He tells you
“What bit?” You question
He quickly shakes his head, “Nevermind.”
He stands up and offers you his hand, unsure of what is happening you take his hand.
He pulls you to your feet, “Come on.”
“Where you two going?” Trevor calls out seeing you two part from the group.
He waves him off, “To talk.”
Trevor furrows his brows then gets up to go inside.
The two of you only move a couple yards away.
“What are you doing?” You ask coming to a stop.
He shrugs, “Waiting.”
“Waiting for what?”
He looks over your shoulder, “Him.”
Turning around you see Luke stomping over.
“What are you doing with my girlfriend?” Luke asks putting emphasis on ‘my’.
“We’re just talking bro, calm down.” Jack tells him, “You’ve been with her all day.”
“Yeah because she’s my girlfriend.” He argues, “I should be able to spend time with her.”
Jack continues to push his buttons, “And I can’t?”
“You’ve spent more time with her this past week than I have, so sorry if I wanted to spend the day with her.” He barks
“Are you jealous or something?” Jack snarks
Coming to the realization that this is the bit Jack was talking about you decide to put an end to it, not liking the way Luke looked.
Grabbing Luke’s hand and you start tugging him away from his brother.
Luke doesn’t give in right away but lets you pull him away, “Where are we going?”
His bad attitude still there, not going away anytime soon.
“Inside.” You state
You’re basically dragging him through the house and into his room.
Closing the door you turn to look at him, “Okay, talk to me. What’s wrong?”
He throws his hands up, “Ever since you got here it’s been Jack this, Quinn that. The entire time you’ve been here you’ve been with them. And it’s driving me insane.”
He continues on, "I've gotten no time with you whatsoever. You're always off doing something with them. It's like you like them more than me, that you would much rather be with them than me."
Now everything is starting to make sense to you, especially with how he's been acting with you three.
He huffs moving closer to you, “You’re dating me. No?”
“What?”
He crosses his arms, “You’re mine, aren’t you?”
“I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.”
“So, tell me.” He says, “Tell me that you’re mine, that you’re not Jack's or Quinn’s or anybody else’s.”
“I’m yours, Luke.” You assure grabbing his face, “I’m not interested in anyone else but you. And I'm sorry that I made you feel like that.”
He uncrosses his arms and wraps them around you, pulling you closer to him.
"Look if you ever feel that way just tell me, don't keep it to yourself." You tell him.

Devils reader is an absolute menace. jack, dawson, and her are constantly trying to prank teammates and staff (her more than anyone). everyone hates when trev and her are together bc they terrorize everyone (lovingly). one year they had all stars together and the media mic'd them up, and the video was so funny bc it was just her and trevor talking everyone's ear off.
oh, they love pulling pranks on each other.
like most of the time she's the one who comes up with the prank and then jack and dawson are the distractions whilst she executes the idea.
listen our girl is so brave she pranked flower one time. they now have a standing rivalry and always make sure to leave little gifts for each other whenever they're in the same place.
sometimes she'd play a prank during practice like she'd get there early to prank some people and then she'd have an emergency where she needs to go to the bathroom and like hide the boy's clothes somewhere.
media day is her playground. everyone is distracted and she'll go around swapping the boy's jerseys with a smaller or bigger size. then she'd fill their gloves with shaving cream or tape everything together.
now when she's with trevor it's chaos.
during an all-star weekend, both of them managed to get selected so they were excited. the league also thought it would be a great idea to mix the two of them up.
there are literally find clips of trevor trying to hide from her because he drank her coffee. at one point, she is fully choking trevor and is being separated by two older players.
two minutes later the two of them are yapping each other's ears off. she sees her idol sidney crosby and she's star-struck like that man calls her by her name and wants to shake her hand.
there is also a video of her running away from gritty and jumping on sid who was talking to nate. she never lived that down.

part of jacky’s birthday present was some wonderful news, and he has kindly demanded that i share it with everyone! when i am changing my name after mine and trevy’s wedding, i will also be changing my middle name to rowden. it was mom’s idea! she said she loved the idea of twins having the same middle name, and since we do have the same birthday, and i’ve been inducted to the family, i asked her if i could change my middle name. to my delight, she said yes! (he cried when i told him, which made me cry, which made mom cry, which made quinn and luke cry, so the family was really a mess tonight!)

it had come out of nowhere. it confused you how he had just done a full 180 spin and ended your three year relationship. he had left for a roadie, kissed you goodbye and said he’d miss you, and then came back a completely different person. it wasn’t until three days after the breakup that you found out the reason.

you stared at the text, wondering what he could possibly know, when his picture popped up on your screen with a facetime. you barely had the energy to talk, your eyes were red and puffy, and you were sure your voice was hoarse from crying, but for some reason you answered. maybe it was intrigue or maybe it was just the fact that you hadn’t talked to luke since before they left for the roadie and you missed him. when the call connected you could tell he was angry, which just confused you even more.
“hello?”
“hey, y/n, how are you doing?” despite his initial demeanor, luke was caring and comforting, which made you smile a bit.
“not great, obviously.”
“i’m sorry, but i have something i need to tell you and it’s not going to make you feel any better.” your heart was racing at his words.
“what?”
“so i was on instagram and this picture comes up so i click on it, right? jack out in winnipeg.”
“luke, i don’t-“
“y/n. he was with a girl.” you went silent, not even sure if you were breathing or your heart was beating. “i had no clue until i saw the picture. i’m gonna fucking kill him.” you stayed silent, taking in the information. luke just sat there silent as well, not sure what to say and still seething at his brothers actions.
“like… how was he… like kissing her?”
“well it was multiple pictures. in the first they were walking and then going in this building but it was all windows on the front so in the next picture you could see them uh…”
“kissing.”
“yeah.” you felt like your whole world was collapsing around you. sure, he had broken up with you, but now he had cheated on you as well? “i’m sorry, y/n.” your stomach hurt at just the thought of him with someone else.
“no, thank you for telling me,” you whispered, but it was as loud as your voice would go. how long had he been talking to this girl? had he planned to meet with her when he went there?
“do you need anything?” luke asked, but you barely heard him. his voice was distant, but a reminder that he was still on the phone. you hung up, or at least thought you did, before you took off to the bathroom. how many other girls did he have in other cities? everything in your stomach came up, which wasn’t much considering you had holed yourself up in bed the past three days. luke sighed as he heard you, hanging up and calling his mom.
you took your time laying there on the bathroom floor, resting your head on your arms. your head swirled with thoughts and questions, each one making you feel more sick as well as angry. you eventually heard your roommate emily coming home, and knew she’d find your feet sticking out of the bathroom door into the hallway. it was only moments later that you heard her voice outside of the door.
“so i see you’ve moved from your bed.”
“he cheated,” was your only response, but you didn’t say it loud enough for her to hear. she hummed in confusion and you rolled over to your back. “he cheated!” you nearly yelled, sniffling afterward. you hadn’t realized until now that tears had been steadily spilling from your eyes, but now they were turning into full sobs. her face fell as she sat down and pulled you up into a hug, letting you cry on her shoulder again. she rubbed your back as you soaked her shoulder with snot and tears, eventually corralling you back to your bed. she refilled your glass of water to make sure you were hydrated, and then left with the promise of bringing you some food.
you were almost asleep when your phone rang, pulling you back to consciousness. you sighed, wondering who could dare to be calling you when pictures of your boyfriend cheating on you were clearly spread across the internet by now. you picked up the phone and groaned at the brightness, but your eyes focused on the name on the screen. ellen.
“hello?” your voice was raspy from crying and then nearly being asleep.
“y/n.” she sounded relieved to hear your voice, which put you at a weird sort of ease. you weren’t sure why you supposed she would be mad at you, but you realized now that you had. “i am so sorry! luke called and told me everything. jack hadn’t even told me that you two had split! i promise you that i’ll be calling him and giving him a piece of my mind because i know i didn’t raise him to do this.”
“oh, thanks, ellen.” you weren’t quite sure what else to say.
“look, i want you to know that we still care about you. you’ve been a part of our family for so long and i need you to let me know if you need anything.”
“yeah, i will,” you told her, though you weren’t sure that you’d take her up on that offer.
“okay, we’ll it’s getting late and i don’t want to hold you up but keep in touch, alright?”
“of course. bye, ellen.”
“bye, hun.” the phone call ended and you dropped your phone to the mattress, looking up to see emily walking in with a plate of food.
“his mom?” you nodded, sitting up and taking the plate. it looked delicious but you just weren’t hungry. “what did she say?”
“just apologized, asked to keep in touch.” you shrugged. “doubt i will though.”
“yeah, that’s tough.” emily knew how close you were to jacks family due to how close he was to them. you had spent three summers at the lake house with them, as well as various holidays and big games. you had grown to be a big sister to luke considering he lived with jack for a year and a half now. she left you alone to eat but you just set the plate on the nightstand, laying back down and falling asleep.
it was a week later that you got another call. by now the whole world knew about the end of your relationship with jack, you had started to do better and migrated to the couch when you weren’t in class or at work. you were in the middle of an episode of new girl when your phone rang, ellen’s name popping up.
“hello?” you weren’t really sure why you picked it up, but here you were.
“y/n! hi! how are you doing, hun?”
“oh, i’m okay.”
“good! good. um, i just wanted to call and check in on you. i haven’t heard anything from you or even luke but i know it’s probably still a rough time for you.”
“yeah.”
“i just- is it okay if i tell you how much i yelled at jack?” you let out a laugh at her question, and she took that as a sign to continue. “i mean, i really laid into him!” she said with a laugh of her own. “i told him to try and apologize, even though i knew he had fucked up and you wouldn’t take him back after what he did.”
“oh, he um, he hasn’t called or anything.”
“i didn’t think he would,” she mumbled, as if she was saying it more to herself.
“i saw that quinn got a hatty the other night,” you said, trying to change the subject.
“he did! it was in detroit so me and jim were there actually and the whole place went crazy. i thought i might lose my hearing for a minute.” you both laughed, and it was almost like your conversations with her before.
“that’s good! he deserves it.”
“he does, he really does.” it was silent for a moment, and you were about to speak again but she beats you to it. “well, i don’t want to keep you. hopefully you weren’t busy when i called.”
“oh no, it’s no problem!”
“i’ll talk to you soon, okay?”
“yeah, talk to you soon.”
after that, it was like clockwork. ellen would call once a week, sometimes twice, always around six o’clock. sometimes you would be busy or working and couldn’t answer, but you’d just apologize during your next call. she never minded, telling you that it was good that you were living your life and having fun. the calls always started with her asking how you were doing, and then you’d talk about things you had heard in the media and news recently. sometimes it was hockey related, sometimes it was about luke or quinn, and sometimes it was other things like new music or the outfits from some award show.
occasionally, the conversation would fall toward jack. when he scored a hatty, when he was chosen to be on the cover of some magazine, when he was once again seen with a girl and the pictures got spread everywhere. ellen tried not to bring it up, but old habits died hard, and you used to spend a lot of time discussing jack. she would always end the conversations about him with apologies, and you always reminded her that it wasn’t her fault.
a month after you had talked to luke last, he was sending you a text and asking you if you could meet for dinner. you hadn’t seen him since before the breakup, and you really missed him, so of course you agreed. he picked you up later that night and you smiled when you climbed into his passenger seat.
“hi lukey. how have you been?”
“pretty good. been playing well.”
“that’s good. i wish i could say that i knew that but-“
“it’s okay. i didn’t think you’d be watching every game after what happened.” you nodded, looking out the window.
“i watch quinn’s sometimes but… watching you is a little harder since it’s not just you.” the car was silent after that, but it didn’t take long for luke to pull up to a small diner. you had brought him here one night that he wasn’t feeling the best about his game, and you knew he needed to get out of his head a bit. so you distracted him by bringing him to the only place you knew was still open at one in the morning. daisy’s diner. once you were in and seated, you both took a quick look over the menu. you ordered your drinks and then when those came out, your food as well, and then settled in.
“can i get the elephant in the room out of the way?” luke asked. you sipped your shake but then nodded. “so back when i told you what happened…” he took a second to find his words, “i confronted jack about all of it. i probably didn’t go about it like i should’ve but i was pissed off so i just really went in on him. he got pissed too and told me it wasn’t any of my business. by the time i talked to him, i had called mom and i guess mom had called him because he started telling me that i had no right to tell her about it and whatever.” he shook his head. “what he did was a dick thing to do though and you didn’t deserve that at all. he’s been mad at me ever since but i’m still mad at him so…” he shrugged.
“awe, lukey. you didn’t have to do all of that for me. your mom told me that she yelled at him pretty bad too.”
“mom talked to you?” he took a sip of his own shake and you nodded.
“yeah. she called me i guess after you called and told her. then she called about a week later. now we’ve been talking once or twice a week.”
“hm. didn’t know that. that’s good though. i should’ve called too, checked in on you.”
“i’ve been okay.” you shrugged. “okay as i can be after getting out of a three year relationship and finding out i’ve been cheated on at least once.” luke gasped.
“you think it was more than once?” you let your eyes fall to the table, shaking your head slightly.
“i don’t know. he never gave me any reason to think he was cheating, even when i was thinking back after we broke up. but i wasn’t with him when he was on the road, who knows what he was doing?”
“okay, you weren’t with him, but i was. he wasn’t usually like that. i actually had to think super hard about when that picture could’ve been taken because he’s almost always with me or dawson or nico when we’re away. it was when we went out after we won and i guess he happened to slip away from everyone. we didn’t even realize he wasn’t there until we were leaving so i called and he said he left early, was already back at the hotel. he was there when i got back so i didn’t really have any reason not to believe him until we got back.” you nodded, trying to blink away the tears that were building on your lash line.
“but that never happened before?” luke shook his head.
“i hate that he did that to you. not only because he’s an asshole and he hurt you, but if i can be a little selfish, i haven’t seen you in a month and i miss you being around all the time.” you laughed slightly, wiping away your tears before they could fall. “seriously! i was trying to text a girl the other day and i didn’t have anyone around to help me come up with what to say.” you laughed more now, and luke smiled.
“did you fumble?”
“massively.”
“awe, it’s okay. i’ll help you next time.” your phone rang and you picked it up, seeing ellen’s name on your screen. “oh, it’s your mom.” luke nodded, letting you know you could answer it.
“i’m gonna run to the bathroom real quick.” he was up and out of the booth as you lifted the phone to your ear.
“hey, ellen. how are you?”
“i’m good! you probably didn’t see but luke set a record for longest ice time in the devils franchise.”
“he didn’t tell me that!”
“you’ve still been talking to him?”
“i’m with him right now, actually. we hadn’t talked since before but he asked if we could go to dinner and catch up.”
“oh well don’t let me interrupt! we can talk later?”
“of course! talk to you later.” the call ended just as the waitress set your food on the table and you thanked her. luke came back a moment later and you both dug into your food. “wait!” you chewed your bite and picked up your phone, swiping over to the camera. “pose!” luke rolled his eyes but posed, giving a thumbs up with the hand that wasn’t holding his fork. you smiled and placed your phone back down, going back to eating.
“this is so fucking good,” luke said, and you nodded in agreement. only a few moments went by before you spoke up again.
“you know you can call me and talk whenever you want, lukey.” he smiled slightly at you, the best he could with food in his mouth.
“thanks, y/n.” you nodded. “um, i do have something else to tell you.” you looked up at him confused. “i wasn’t sure if i was going to tell you for sure or not but,” luke put his fork down and leaned back, reaching into his pocket, “i searched jacks room the other day because he took something from me but instead of finding it i found this.” your jaw dropped at the box he held out and opened, displaying the prettiest ring you’d ever seen.
“luke…” you didn’t know what to say.
“i just figured you should know.” you nodded.
“just put it back where you found it,” you said quietly. he nodded, slipping the box back into his pocket. it was silent between the two of you for a few minutes before you spoke again, trying to get yourself out of your head. “your mom said you broke a franchise record.”
“oh, yeah.” his cheeks flushed at the attention being put on him.
“good job! i’m proud of you.”
“thanks.”
ellen called again the next week, asking how you were doing and how your dinner with luke was. you could hear a bit of a smile in her voice when she asked about it.
“i saw the picture you posted after. he looked like he actually didn’t mind having his picture taken for once.”
“he definitely rolled his eyes but he posed.” you were a little nervous about the fact that she had seen it, considering the aftermath of posting it. you had captioned the post “my favorite hughes brother” and allegations were immediately flying. people were sending you threats for jumping from jack to luke, with very few coming to your defense. you didn’t pay them any mind though, not until now. you didn’t think you could handle it if ellen thought the same as all of those so-called fans.
“well i, for one, loved the caption.” you smiled at her words, laughing along with her when she giggled. “don’t tell jack i said that though.”

The sun was barely above the horizon as Olivia helped her father and grandparents stuff their bags into the trunk of her car. She'd woken up early enough to offer to drop them at the airport before driving back to Ann Arbor with Quinn.
"Sorry for wakin' you up so early," she quietly told Quinn, who was leaning against her car.
He had a tired, lazy smile. "I don't mind."
Olivia closed the trunk before cocking her head at the car, silently telling him to get in. He slid into the back where Nash and Beau were.
"You got enough space there, kid?" Nash asked Quinn, squirming in his seat. How he got stuck between his father and his daughter's neighbor in the back was beyond him.
"Yes, sir."
In the passenger seat, Marianne handed Olivia a mug of piping hot coffee when she climbed into the driver's seat, and just like that, they were on their way to the airport. The drive was mostly quiet, everyone still reeling out of their sleepy state of mind as the radio hummed in the background.
When they reached the airport, Quinn stayed in the car, observing through the window as Olivia said goodbye to her family, sharing hugs and words, where it finally hit him that he'd never been as integral in her family the way she was in his.
Sure, he knew part of it was due to the fact Olivia hadn't reconnected with them until recently, and he might be able to consider Sam and Dorothea another set of grandparents. Still, he didn't know Nash the way Olivia knew Jim, and he didn't know Diane the way Olivia knew Ellen. He'd never get that chance with Diane, and he wished he'd done more to talk to her when she came up that one summer.
Quinn was shaken out of his thoughts when he spotted Olivia waving him over. He got out of the car, but before he could reach them, Marianne had marched toward him and tugged him into an embrace that had his eyes widening.
"Take care of our Reese, will you?" Marianne whispered. "I worry about her sometimes."
Quinn finally returned the hug. "I'll do my best."
Marianne squeezed his shoulder as she let go. "Thank you. Good luck with everything, Quinn."
He thanked her, taking note of the surprise that flickered through his body at her words. He didn't get many chances to talk to Olivia's grandparents that weekend, and he would barely say they were anywhere near being close, but something about how they still wished him success made him realize where Olivia had gotten her kindness.
Nash walked up to them, clapping his hand on Quinn's shoulder, giving him a slight jostle. "It was nice meetin' you, kid."
"You too, sir." Quinn's voice was stiff.
Beau raised his hand to wave at Quinn, who returned the gesture. Despite how he'd just been thinking about getting closer to Olivia's family, Nash's side seemed to intimidate him to the point where he wished he'd stayed in the car.
"Are you sure you don't want me to drive?" Quinn asked once he and Olivia parted from her family.
"No one drives my baby," Olivia said.
Quinn sighed as he moved up to the front.
As she pulled away from the terminal, Olivia couldn't help but laugh. "Why'd you look so scared of my family?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. They scare me."
"They scare you?"
"Your grandpa talked about getting his ear sliced off!"
"Doctors stitched it back on just fine," Olivia said dismissively.
As they drew closer to Ann Arbor, Olivia could feel the growing tension festering between her and Quinn, even as they talked their whole way over. The radio didn't help to mute the questions built upon anxious 'what ifs' bouncing around in their heads.
What if nothing changed? What if, although they ended their break on good terms, they went back to being strangers? What if they stayed in contact yet drifted again? What if that was all their friendship was ever meant to do—drift, fizzle, become nothing? What if...What if?
Olivia turned into the street by Quinn's dorm, sighing as she put the car in park.
"Thank you," he said.
"Yeah, of course."
Quinn held onto the door handle, ready to leave but clearly hesitating. He turned his head, watching as she took a sip out of her mug. "Come inside?"
Olivia's head snapped to look at him. "Squish, I have class in thirty minutes, and I gotta find parking."
"Not for long," he inserted quickly. He couldn't meet her gaze as he mumbled, "Want you to meet Josh."
The gesture was something so simple yet loaded. If he introduced her to one of his closest friends, she would be cementing herself a place in his life again, ensuring she couldn't disappear on him completely because she wouldn't be a stranger they walked past on the Diag anymore. She would have a name and a relationship attached to her.
"Okay." Olivia turned the engine off. "But I'm blamin' you if my car gets towed or I get a ticket."
"Take some money from that jar Jacky has," Quinn said. "That'd cover a ticket."
"God, you know about it?"
He merely smiled.
They headed inside the building, with Olivia trailing behind like a lost puppy. She bumped into his side when he abruptly stopped in front of his door, uttering an 'oomph' followed by an 'ow' as she rubbed her nose.
Quinn chuckled, opening the door. "You okay?"
Olivia hummed, letting her eyes roam the quaint dorm room. She noticed the figure sitting at a desk, entirely focused on the TV.
Josh paused the game and looked over his shoulder at the sound of the door opening. His greeting died at the tip of his tongue, and surprise flashed through his face at the sight of a not-much-shorter, blonde girl hiding behind his roommate. He recognized her as the one picking Quinn up a few days ago. Standing up, he asked, "Who's this?"
Olivia poked her head out from behind Quinn's shoulder. She waved, mouth pulled back in a grin. "Hi, I'm Libby!"
Josh's gaze flicked to Quinn as a smirk stretched across his face. He extended his hand out for Olivia to shake. "Josh. Nice to meet you."
They exchanged a few words, though Olivia couldn't stay for long before she had to run off to class. She waved at Josh before turning to Quinn, enveloping him in a swift, friendly hug. "Bye, Squish."
When the door closed behind her, Josh turned to Quinn. "Squish?"
His cheeks reddened. "Don't ask."
"So, that's her, huh?"
"Yeah."

Olivia hadn't meant to go over to Quinn's dorm as often as she did. Between classes, whenever she didn't feel like biding her time at the library or some café, she would text Quinn to see if he was in his room.
She'd gotten a good grasp on his schedule, but on days like today, when her mind was racing and cluttered with all sorts of thoughts, she'd wholly forgone the texting and came knocking on his door.
A moment later, Josh stood in front of her. "Hey, what's up?"
Olivia sniffled, hoping the frigid weather outside would be a good enough excuse if he asked. "Is Quinn here?"
"You just missed him," he tsked. "He left for class five minutes ago."
A frown tugged at her lips before she pulled her phone out to look at the time. "Fuck, right. I—Sorry, I'll head out."
She had only taken a few steps away when Josh called her back. She turned her head to see him leaning against the doorway. "Do you have anywhere to be?" he asked.
Olivia shook her head.
"Then stay here and wait for him."
"Are you sure?"
Josh hummed his assent, and soon enough, Olivia was sitting at Quinn's desk while they locked themselves in a conversation. It was small talk mostly, in the way Midwesterners seemed so good at doing—complaints about classes, professors, and assignments; wishes for warmer weather; discussions about who was going to end up at the Super Bowl.
"There's no way you think the Titans are gonna make playoffs!" Josh argued. "Why do you even like them so much?"
Olivia laughed, throwing her head back. "Because I grew up in Tennessee."
"Thought you were from Michigan." He furrowed his eyebrows. "Your grandparents live next door to Quinn, don't they?"
"Pretty recent common mistake," Olivia said. Her breath trembled as she let her accent slip through. "My momma was from Michigan. Daddy's from down south, so that's where I grew up."
Josh's head reeled back, not expecting the drawl in her voice. "Never would've expected that."
Olivia smiled to herself. "Quinn could probably tell you my accent was stronger when he first met me."
Josh nodded along, taking in the information he'd gathered in the past few minutes. The pieces were slowly coming together until he could build some semblance of a biography. She was from the South; she was only a few days younger than him, and although she hadn't mentioned Quinn's family, he'd overheard one too many conversations between her and Quinn and phonecalls between Quinn and his family to know that she was much closer to the Hugheses than he could ever imagine, more than Quinn would ever let on.
But parts of it didn't make sense.
"You've known Quinn since he moved to Michigan, right?" he asked, crossing his arms. Olivia dipped her head down in confirmation. "Did you only ever come up in the summer?"
"Yeah, I stayed in Memphis for the rest of the year."
"Still," he narrowed his eyes slightly, "how is it that I've only just met you?"
Olivia didn't know how much Quinn talked about her, if ever, so she should've expected the question, yet it still caught her off guard. "Oh, I don't know."
Those words were easier to utter than reciting stories involving a rekindling with her father and a dead mother that kept her away from Canton for two years or the ex-girlfriend, younger brothers, and cousins that played into the dissolution of her friendship with Quinn.
"He talks about you," Josh said. "Well, kind of. He's never explicitly mentioned you, but it was easy to put two and two together."
Josh inhaled, leaning further into his seat until it was balancing on the back two legs. "Well, noticed the thing connecting your houses and asked about it. He said something about a pretty neighbor—didn't add anything to it, though. Always wondered where this 'pretty neighbor' was because you somehow were never home when I'd come over to Quinn's. But now that I know what you look like, I can't say he was wrong about the 'pretty' part."
Olivia felt her cheeks warm, unable to keep her eyes connected with Josh's.
"And sometimes he'll get on a call with his family. I figured this 'Libby' I keep hearing about was the pretty neighbor he was talking about. Thanksgiving and meeting you that first time only confirmed everything."
Olivia chewed on the inside of her cheek as his words replayed through her mind. Her lips twitched. "You're a lot brighter than Quinn."
Josh laughed. "Why do you say that?"
"When I picked him up, he said he wasn't expecting me to be the one to pick him up." Her chuckle came out as a scoff.
"Yeah, he's not exactly the smartest when it comes to these types of things."
Before Olivia could ask what 'these types of things' entailed, the door opened, and she shifted her attention to Quinn, who stood at the doorway with a wrinkled forehead.
"Hey, what's going on?" he asked, letting his backpack drop to the ground on his way over to Olivia.
Josh kept his gaze on her, grinning. "Just keeping each other company."
Olivia twisted her body as Quinn drew nearer. He shrugged his winter coat off, letting it hang on his bedpost since hers was draped over his chair. She looked up at him through her eyelashes. "How was class?"
Quinn answered dismissively because he could tell she wasn't there to talk about how his day went. It was the way her tired eyes were still glossy with unfallen tears, her lips that were only lightly pulled into a smile, and the mottled red painted across her cheeks.
"I'm gonna head out," Josh announced, standing.
Olivia looked at him. "You don't have to leave."
Josh shrugged. "I have to meet with someone anyway."
Once Josh was out of the room, Quinn let his hand brush the stray pieces of hair out of Olivia's face. "Everything okay?"
Her inhale was shaky and slow. "Yeah."
Quinn shot her a knowing look, and that was enough to get tears pricking at her eyes. Panic flared in his expression as he circled around his chair to crouch before her. "Hey, hey, hey, what's wrong?"
Olivia opened her mouth to speak, but all that came out was a sob she was trying so hard to fight off. She felt Quinn pull her into his arms and off the chair until she was curled up in his lap. Her fingers scrunched the soft fabric of his sweater while his hand gently cradled the back of her neck. She wanted to explain everything bouncing around in her head, but every time she tried, the words died in her throat, replaced by a cry.
It was probably the first time in a while she'd let herself release all of the pent-up emotion from her soul. She couldn't burden her grandparents while they grieved the loss of their daughter, and she didn't want Jack, Luke, or Alex to see her in such a state because she felt like she always needed to be strong for them, to be that older sister they always claimed she was.
She should've known it would all come crumbling down eventually, and she was glad she had Quinn to hold her trembling body and let her cry into the crook of his neck. A part of her felt guilty for springing this all on him, though, especially after seeing the panic on his face.
Olivia just didn't know that his mind was spiraling with thoughts of what brought her to tears. He couldn't recall ever seeing her cry—after all, she'd always been Sunshine to him—but he knew he didn't like seeing her like this.
When Olivia calmed down, Quinn pulled away slightly, moving his hands to hold her face. His thumbs swept across her damp cheeks. "Gonna tell me what's wrong?"
Olivia used her sleeve to wipe under her nose. "Every-fucking-thing. I don't know." Her gaze drew to the ceiling, rapidly blinking away the new wave of tears threatening to pour out.
Quinn's gaze softened. "I'm sorry."
She shook her head. "It's okay. I just—I feel so overwhelmed."
"Is there anything I can do to make you feel less overwhelmed?" he asked.
Olivia sniffled, shrugging his hands away from her face before tucking her head under his chin. Her hold on him tightened. "Just...hold me, please?"
"Okay," Quinn murmured, snaking his arms around her body. He sat on the ground with her on his lap, even when his legs began to lose feeling. He could hear her steady breaths, and his gaze flickered to his bed. He wouldn't be able to carry her up the lofted piece of furniture, and though he didn't want to wake her up, he figured she would rather sleep on his bed than on the ground.
So, he gently shook her awake, muttering her name.
Olivia whined, writhing in his arms. "What?"
She didn't get an answer as Quinn hooked his arm under the bends of her knees before pushing himself off the ground. He staved off his smile when she squealed, not expecting him to stand up and carry her. He then let her feet touch the ground again. "C'mon."
Olivia's eyebrows knitted together in confusion, sleep still weighing down any clarity, yet she followed him as he climbed up his lofted bed that shook and squeaked with each movement. "I can't imagine having sex on here is all that great," she said, voice nasally and raspy.
Quinn's face turned bright red, and he couldn't muster up the strength to look her in the eyes. "That's what you're thinking of right now?"
She shrugged sheepishly.
Quinn grabbed her hand and tugged her down until she was lying on his bed. Her body relaxed against the mattress that was comfier than some of the other dorm ones she'd been on. "Figured you'd want to sleep on a mattress rather than on me," he said.
Olivia arched an eyebrow at the slight innuendo.
"Not like that," he quickly amended, propping himself up on the wall his bed was back up against. "Just meant it'd be comfier. And, if you ever want to nap, all you need to do is come knocking on my door."
Olivia glanced up at him from where her head lay on his pillow with a small smile. "Thank you."
Quinn returned the smile.
"Your bed is comfy," she mumbled, face partly squished against the pillow. "But I need to get work done. I wasn't even supposed to fall asleep in the first place. Sorry."
Quinn hummed his disapproval. "You need some rest. You said it yourself: You're tired. Trust me, you'll feel better after a nap."
Olivia tried pushing herself up, but before she could adequately sit up, Quinn stopped her. She flopped back onto the mattress. "You're annoyin'."
He chuckled. "You won't get any work done if you're putting all your effort into having a functioning body."
"I'm less physically tired than I am mentally tired," she said offhandedly.
Quinn's head tilted, eyes tracing how pretty she looked on his bed. "Talk to me, Sunshine."
Olivia sighed, tossing around in his bed. She tried to keep some space between them, but the twin-sized bed left little to no room. "How do you have space on this thing?"
"It's usually just me on here," he said. "Now stop evading."
"'M not evadin'."
Quinn could tell she was physically tired, even if she tried to downplay it. Her accent was slipping through, soft and lazy in the way he remembered from when he first met her. His heart broke a little bit every time he thought about why she'd chosen to hide one of his favorite things about her, but he'd be lying if he said he didn't think it was justified.
"Yes, you are," he said softly. He nudged her arm. "C'mon, need you to talk to me. What's going on in that pretty head of yours?"
Olivia bit back her smile. "You think I'm pretty?"
"You're evading."
"So are you."
"Libby."
Her expression faltered. "Are you mad?"
Bewilderment marred Quinn's face. "No, why would I be mad?"
Olivia's shrug was more of a squirm. "Sounded mad."
His face softened. "I'm sorry. I'm not mad." He reached for her hand, linking their pinkies together. "Promise."
A smile threatened to shine through as she squeezed his pinky, suddenly hit with a bout of nostalgia. "Thank you for bein' patient with me. I know I've been kind of a downer recently."
"Hey, we're not doing that," Quinn rebutted. "You have every reason to be upset, and if you can't formulate the words you wanna say, that's okay. When you do, I'll be there to listen."
Olivia squeezed his pinky.
"But...I mean it when I say you'll feel better if you take a nap."
"You're not gonna let me leave until I do, are you?"
"Nope," Quinn said all too proudly.
Olivia jokingly rolled her eyes before turning to her side. She tucked herself under his comforter, basking in the weight of it against her body. Her bleary eyes looked up at Quinn. "Thank you...again."
"Gonna start a thank you count if you keep saying it."
Olivia unlatched their pinkies. "Can't I voice my appreciation?"
Quinn's smile was soft. "'Course you can." He ruffled her hair, taking in the way her nose scrunched. "Go on, get some sleep."
When he started shifting around to clamber off his bed, Olivia's hand shot out to grip his wrist. Her hold quickly loosened, afraid she'd grabbed on too tightly when his gaze dropped to his wrist. "Don't go," she mumbled.
"I'll be in the room. I'm not going anywhere," he assured her, covering her hand with his, squeezing gently.
"No, I mean, stay—in bed." Her cheeks grew rosy at the request, suddenly feeling shy under his stare. "At least until I fall asleep. Just need something to hold."
It hadn't been a lie. Since her mother died, Olivia struggled to sleep unless she held something, which was where Charlie came in handy, and sometimes the boys. It was something of a soothing gesture to feel the subtle signs of life beneath her fingertips, the way blood pumped through their veins, the low thumping of their heart near her ear. To tell her mind that they were alive.
Quinn chewed on the inside of his cheek. The helpless gleam in her eyes was enough to drag him back to his previous spot. He watched Olivia tentatively inch closer to his side until he threw his arm around her, pulling her flush against him.
His heartbeat was abnormally fast, yet Olivia only thought of it as a comforting sound against her ear, lulling her closer to sleep. Then she felt his hand begin rubbing up and down her back, and she swore it was the best feeling in the world. Her eyes fell shut while she hugged Quinn closer (if that was physically possible).
Quinn listened as steady breaths slowly came to fruition past her lips. When he was sure she was fast asleep, he carefully reached into his pocket for his phone, searching for Dorothea's contact to let her know Olivia wasn't making it home that night.
Despite how he'd only planned on staying with her until she fell asleep, he couldn't help but feel a tiredness stitch through his mind too. He was close to sleeping when the door opened again.
Josh slipped back into the room quietly. His eyes landed on Olivia's jacket still adorned over Quinn's chair and her backpack on the floor, then he looked at Quinn's bed. He couldn't see Olivia all that well, but considering how cramped their room was, there were few options as to where she'd gone.
"She asleep?" asked Josh.
Quinn's response was a low mumble, voice groggy with exhaustion.
Wriggling his eyebrows, Josh said, "Alright, I see how it is."
Quinn barely paid any mind to his roommate.
Josh made a sound that resembled lashing. "Whipped."
Quinn pretended he didn't hear anything. "She wasn't feeling well."
"Doesn't mean you aren't giving her literal heart eyes right now. You're putting Isabella from Phineas and Ferb to shame."
"I'm not giving her heart eyes."
"Yes, you are." Josh hopped onto his bed, getting a better view of Quinn. His stare lingered on them, still trying to piece together the whole story. "Hey, has she ever met Brady?"
"Figured if she would've met any of your friends, it would've been him." Josh shrugged. "Earlier, I asked her why I was just meeting her, even though you and I have known each other for years."
"What'd she say?"
"She didn't know."
"She knows." Quinn scoffed out a chuckle. "She definitely knows."
Josh arched an eyebrow, silently pushing him to elaborate.
"Wasn't being a good friend to her," Quinn said. "Didn't try talking to her until Thanksgiving, and when I did, she made sure I knew it."
"Well, you're definitely being more than a good friend now," Josh teased.
Quinn couldn't hide the fond smile from shining through as he redirected his gaze toward Olivia. He wasn't sure how they'd managed to change things around so quickly, how she'd gotten so comfortable in his space again after never being in it for years, how he was the one she sought out when she needed someone to talk to.
But he wouldn't change it.
Not the way she was getting along with Josh, not the way she looked out for his brothers as though they were her own, not the way she laid in his arms, not the way she fitted so perfectly back into his life.
Olivia stirred around, her eyes fluttering open. "What time is it?"
Quinn glanced at his phone. "Almost eight."
Her heart jumped a beat when she finally registered how he'd stayed with her throughout her nap. She didn't let herself dwell on the thought as she pushed herself up, forgetting that his bed was so close to the ceiling.
Thump!
Olivia collapsed onto the bed with a cry, clutching the back of her head.
Quinn failed miserably at keeping his laughs at bay. "You okay?"
She shook her head, voice muffled against the pillow. "No. I can't drive home concussed."
"Oh, my God." Quinn groaned with a roll of his eyes. "You're not concussed."
"You sure?" Josh smirked. "Why don't you look into her eyes some more and check?"
Quinn shot his roommate a glare before focusing on Olivia again. "I wasn't gonna let you go home anyway. Thea's not expecting you home either."
She lifted her head with narrowed eyes. "Quintin, what'd you do?"
"Told her you were staying the night. You shouldn't be driving when you're tired or when it's this dark outside," he said before mumbling, "Frankly, you shouldn't be driving at all."
Olivia smacked him with his pillow. "I'm a perfectly good driver. Michigan's just weird with their rules. And if anythin', you should be sayin' that to Jack."
"Hey, I taught him how to drive!"
"Go figure."
Quinn lightly shoved her head. "Just go back to sleep."
"But work."
"Do it in the morning."
Olivia huffed before flopping back onto his pillow. "I blame how comfy your mattress is."
