December tastes bitter no matter how long I hold it in my mouth. December is the month of the blue girl, but she never comes to celebrate. She comes to leave bleeding hand prints and tell me, you know what comes next. December doesn’t care to remember my name. In December, I’m just the girl without wings. Not that I’d know where to go if I had them, anyway. December doesn’t feel safe until I can count down to the new year on one hand. December will not allow me to let go of things I don’t want anymore. It forces these words under my skin and tells me nobody will love me without them. December says, you are a winter child, and I won’t let your heart be anything but ice. December is the knife held to my throat. In December, I will not be safe unless I learn to hold my tongue.
