I love crayola markers!

I'm continuing the sketchbook Crayola Saga. Fun Fact, I have over 20 sketchbooks. I finally counted. I complete about three sketchbooks a year. I'm almost done with my third one this year (though the first one was a continuation from last year). When I was in middle school, I was terrible at keeping a sketchbook. There would be one tiny doodle per page, if I drew anything at all. And I ripped out so many pages too.

Now sketchbooks are the only way I engage with art. They're messy and chaotic, but I fill them up good!

I typically default to plain pen sketches, but in my last sketchbook I started pulling out different supplies I neglected. Turns out crayola markers are fun. Though some of these are other cheap water-based markers. Either way... fun fun fun! I wish my

This is my entry for @creatingblackcharacters's Melanin Beam Challenge that coincides with her birthday. Happy Birthday! And thank you so much for your blog 🙏💕

I thought about which character I wanted to do for this challenge, and Steven (Universe) became the obvious choice. The show is my favorite of all time! I specifically chose to draw him in his Movie / Future series design. I love the pink Letterman jacket!

The aesthetic is leaning a bit too much into Arts and Crafts territory, but we trudge forward. I decided to cut the figures out and stick them to red construction paper because I wanted a red background, but the layering with watercolor would've taken too much time.

For the design, I created a mock-up digitally and then drew it traditionally. I tried to have his hair follow the six-segment pattern of his original hair, but in a more organic, afro-texture.

For this piece, I decided to do this in the Steven Universe style, or at least as close I could. To achieve this, I first created a digital edit to use as my reference. The images are read from left to right. I also put which step they are in the ALT text.

Step One - I clipped three Steven screenshots into a digital collage. Step Two - I made a black edit of these screenshots. Step Three - The rough sketch pass. I just wanted to get the idea on paper. It's pretty wonky here. For some reason, a ballpoint sketch I did of this composition looked better than when I went in with pencil. Step Four - Cleaned up sketch pass. Here I made the figures more consistent and appealing. Step Five - The colored pencil sketch pass. This was the final sketch, I went in with a reddish brown color so it'd blend better with the watercolors. Step Six - Initial watercolor pass. Just like with the rough sketch, I was just trying to get some color down. My watercolors aren't vibrant, so it takes a few passes to get the desired shade of hair & skin. Step Seven - I added in black line art with ballpoint pen. The colored pencil was getting lost, so I went in with pen to add back in clarity. Step Eight - I cut out the figures and glued them to red construction paper. As you can see from earlier steps, I tried to color the background red, but it was pale and streaky. Step Nine - We have reached the end! I added the stars into this piece. I layered the colors to be more rich and vibrant. I also went in with waterbased markers to add solid shadows.

Sal in 3 different styles.

Another spread from my last sketchbook... I think I had sketched out the half-body and more realistic portrait in graphite to compare my regular style to something more "realistic".

Then at some other point as I was watching a @tacodemuerte sketchbook session video, they were going crazy with the watercolor (or gouache?). Either way, I loved it. Her work is so colorful and expressive, especially the traditional stuff.

So I was like I gotta go CRAZY with the watercolor! I'm generally happy with the result, even though it looks like they have a large mustard stain on their pants. I haven't reached the point where I can make something appear colorful yet subtle.

Finally, I added the portrait on the top right to round out the spread. I haven't figured out a solid cartoony style yet. I kept piling medias on this, first colored pencil and then water-based markers.

Girl Gang, am I right?

More sketchbook shenanigans. More crayola marker terror. I remember I was really trying to make sketches that were interesting and expressive. I do believe I succeeded. Fun fact: I seem to default to flowy camisoles or sleeveless tops in terms of fashion. Weird, but I guess it's more fashionable than a t-shirt or hoodie.

Stylized Portrait Practice!

Hello, it's been a while! I've had a whole sketchbook to post, but I never felt like it until now.

These are from my last sketchbook. I've been practicing at drawing both diverse and unusual faces. My portrait skills are competent, but I always stay in a similar box. I loved how these turned out, especially the orange-skinned woman at the top right. She looks like she could be a character in an animated movie or show!

I also busted out the Crayola markers which I never use. So they were cursed with weird skin. Again, top right... her face looks moldy. Oh, well, the drawing is still good.

STUDENT LOG 3: February 1st, 2025

Hello! I am finally posting my Week 3 work! A lot of new things this week --- new pen control exercises, introduced gesture, and artist studies! Digital gesture drawing sure takes getting use to. I only managed to get one artist study done so far (see the last image). I decided to do a piece by tacodemuerte. Their art has such amazing gesture and stylization! Their lineart is great too. I tried not to spend too much time on the art, so my study isn't entirely accurate, but I enjoyed deeper analyzing the piece. Week 4 introduces perspective, and I finally get to move on from the tracing exercise (thank God)! I'm going to spend two weeks on Week 4 and catching up on the Week 3 studies. STUDENT LOG 2: January 17th, 2025

This week wasn't as prolific as I would've liked. First, I had the wrist injury which delayed me a few days and then school started back for me! That threw off my whole routine, so I didn't do exercises every day. Still, I noticed that it got easier as I progressed. I got faster at both the pen control exercises and the tracings. Now do they look better?? That's debatable.... Week 3 introduces gesture drawing! Which will be fun, but also challenging. I also have to study (copy) five images from my favorite artists. I wonder who I'll choose... 🤔

STUDENT LOG 1: January 8th, 2025

For the first week of Marc Brunet's ART School. This week is a slow start since I'm redoing other assignments. I modified the worksheets so I would practice one exercise each day. My plans to redo the original worksheet were so rudely interrupted by my injured wrist from a spontaneous workout. It's feeling better today, but I'm still going to take a day off from drawing to let it heal up. I can't wait to start this week! The figure drawing assignments are coming up!

Top secret W I P... I'll only share here! I'm doing a "benchmark" illustration for the ART school course. Of course, I have to draw my favorite OC. I'm also giving myself an entire month to do this, so I'm taking my sweet time. I think this'll turn out cool! Edit 1: Added the second and third sketch pass. Edit 2: Added the lineart pass. ART School figure drawing assignments I did in 2022. These were the gesture drawing exercises for 30 sec to 1 min. They were low key my favorite! I really like gesture drawing, and it's really improved my art.

It's 2025 which means I'm officially restarting Marc Brunet's ART School course. I'm on Week 1 which means I'll be starting Visual Communication 1 and Photoshop for Digital Production 1. Here are my assignments I did back in 2022.

For the Photoshop unit, there's the pen control assignment, and the rest are about learning how to use the tools for photo manipulation. I don't plan on on redoing most of them since it's not relevant to focus. I will continue to do the pen control assignment, it's quite helpful! I'm really rusty with digital art. The only "assignment" for Visual Communication is daily deliberate observation. I might also start doing still lives to further build my visual library. Once I finish reposting old work, I'll start posting my homework weekly every Wednesday.
