XBee S6B Soft AP mode

I tried everything written in this tutorial:

But my WiFly Remote just can’t connect! (And btw pls make sure you download the correct WiFly Remote app. Apparently there are other “WiFly Remote”s app out there.)

So apparently I should set all the parameter to “default” first, and WRITE TO THE XBEE (IMPORTANT!). And after that try changing the parameter to Soft AP again. It should be working. No need to set up the IP address and the port. It’s assigned automatically to the xbee as 192.168.1.10 and 9750 (0x2616).

Can see the list of topics but cannot echo

After a few trials and errors, I managed to see the list of topics ("rostopic list") but I can't get the data, ie I can't see anything when I do "rostopic echo sample_topic"

This is also the reason why I can't open the control panel.

So basically what I did was I added the IP of the vehicle 192.168.1.xxx as "bbauv" in the etc/hosts file of the computer.

How to connect to the vehicle

You need to know the IP of the vehicle, which is in this case: 192.168.1.xxx so you can try "ping 192.168.1.xxx" to make sure that you're connected to the vehicle.

If you want to use SSH you can also do "ssh [email protected]", but Alex said this is not needed.

Then you need to know your own IP. You can type "hostname -I" and that's it. Then, export your IP so that the master (the vehicle) can recognize it by "export ROS_IP=192.168.1.zzz" followed with "export ROS_MASTER_URI=http://192.168.1.xxx:11311" to tell your computer about the IP of the master. 11311 is the port.

So everytime you're opening a new terminal, you need to 1) source, 2) export your IP, 3) export the master IP

Day 22 - Night

Super board. So let's continue on the talking plushie.

So I'm gonna use Arduino Uno and Sparkfun Arduino MP3 shield. They have the complete guide here:

But I want to power the Arduino using battery, so this will add to the list of stuff I need to buy:

Electrical:

- Arduino MP3 shield

- Headers (because the shield doesn't have headers)

- Thread and needle

Day 22?

Let's say it's Day 22? Yeah ok so some update. The control code can update without problem.

For motor controller, SC is using Allegro A4960 now, so we're looking into the schematics and the codes.

Huh, what day is it again?

Long time never update, because it's Christmas and all, you see.

So, uhh, I went to the twins' house during Christmas, on 25th and 26th, and rest on 27th, and met my GIP friends on 28th.

So during the four days, I've found a lot of manga, namely:

So today I went back to lab, and finished off the control system needed. The new thruster chip is not here yet so we can't work on the thruster board yet. But basically SC thought the back-emf is a pain in the ass so he looked for a chip that can perform the commutation using back-emf for us, so we don't need to make the circuit ourselves. In this case, we decided to get Allegro A4960 motor driver, which is basically an ESC. We'll wait until the chip comes.

And in the mean time, I think in the future, being a geek who is working in my own lab doesn't seem like a bad idea, so I want to start small. I want to make a talking plushie.

The idea comes from Sumikko Gurashi plushie, and I want it to talk. So the easiest to do is of course to make it into an MP3 player. So I was thinking of having an MP3 shield connected to Arduino and stuff it inside the plushie. Maybe we can add a button to shuffle the MP3s.

I'm gonna make the plushie by my own, so it'll be good to buy the materials when I go back to my home country.

Day 16 - CS students create magic

I think it's really a divine intervention. I think God doesn't want me to sleep so late tonight, so He screwed up the internet in my room, made me thinking "Fck it I'm gonna get some supper and do this work there" and I went to Supersnack for supper.

When I was struggling to compile the new code of the vehicle, just nice, Alex was walking into Supersnack. With Alex there, he performed his magic, and voila, everything works in seconds.

I'm speechless. Now I'm gonna go to sleep.

Day15 - qt problem

I just remembered I had a problem with qt5. I think it's because I haven't installed it. But the qt5 in the website is like 500MB!! It took 3 hours just to download the shit.

But I found this online and it seemed to help resolved the problem.

In case the website is gone, basically the guy said you should do this:

"Try

sudo apt-get install qt5-default qttools5-dev-tools

If QT is not installed yet, then

sudo apt-get remove qt5-default qttools5-dev-tools && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean

and return errors (if any)."

But don't return the errors to me. For me, the first code worked like magic. But to be safe I also waited for 3 hours and installed qt 5.4.

Day 15 - finally continuing on work and the fucking serial problem

Hello world, I finally resume on my work.

So EW wanted the PID controller to be changed. We're not going to use DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) for the competition in Singapore, SAUVC, so we're removing that and we need to change the code.

This time, it's time to learn about ROS' Dynamic Reconfigure!

Basically it lets you to change the parameters in the code, it can be used in the control panel, for example.

I kinda get what it does, so now I need to clarify with EW what is it exactly that he wants.

But before that, I need to be able to compile the old codes!

But the old codes don't want to compile!! Great!

I've been having problem with 'serial/serial.h' not found.

fatal error: serial/serial.h: No such file or directory #include <serial/serial.h>

I've been trying to do everything, but I think the key thing is just write this in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install ros-indigo-serial

If it doesn't work, you may want to try this and this.

Day 14

Had a very unpleasant dream. And I seriously need to go out to be productive. I spent 2 hours making curry, and did this at night

We had a pool test today. Let's see, what did I learn today? Before you put the vehicle in the pool, you turn on the PMB (power monitoring board) and plug it into the vehicle. Plug the ethernet, and put it to the pool.

It was raining this morning.

Then at night I decided to start on NaNoRenO (which should start in March, actually).

NaNoRenO was inspired and modeled after the idea of NaNoWrimo (write a 50,000 word novel in 1 month) and NaNoMangO (make a 30 page comic in 1 month). NaNoRenOchallenges developers to create and finish their own Ren'ai game within a designated month's time from concept to final product.

For NaNoRenO, my plan is to use Minase Ruruu's doujin and put it into a visual novel. I can't draw, so Minase-sensei is going to provide the art for us. I'll only do the scripting and programming.

(So I started NaNoRenO early, because I know I won't be able to commit full time in March and I know this won't be finished in one month. But if I don't have any deadline I won't have motivation to finish this.)

So today I almost finished the lineart for one background and one character.

I hope I'll be able to finish it *A*)9

Day 12 - late night

Ok so after exercising and yada yada I decided to continue on the brushless dc motor controller. This has been giving me a headache. I feel like I'm going in a circle.

1. Why do we have to use back-emf or hall-sensor? Almost all the resources that I found is using open-loop control of the motor, which means they just turn on and off the windings.

I should try this guy's method and see if it works. It looks so simple.

Day 12 - some more thoughts

So I've always been interested in a lot of things. I think making robots is cool. I think programming is cool. I think being an artist is cool.

And so I tend to bite more than I can chew and in the end I become a jack of all trade, but master of none.

But I've always been thinking that if I keep it up, in 50 years I will be like a master of all.

But I guess this kind of mindset is not good.

I'm gonna have to choose just one, and not care with the rest. But how to choose one? Let's ask these questions:

1. What do I enjoy doing? (reading manga, actually)

2. What is my goal in life?

Maybe I'll be an artist.

Day 12 - some thoughts

I never really care about my body image. I think it's too much work and I'm just plain lazy.

Then I start thinking of what I will be missing out if I keep doing this.

Well there are some stuff came into my mind. And it feels like we only live once, and it'll be a pity not to try to experience as many things as possible (except some dangerous stuff, like bungee jumping, no thanks).

And to miss them out just because you're plain lazy is just not a good excuse at all.

Day 12

I did nothing today!

Hah, just kidding. So today I finished reading Ao Haru Ride. It's very good. Although I'd say that Strobe Edge is Sakisaka Io's masterpiece, but Ao Haru Ride is also very nice.

And I share the same birth date with Sakisaka Io!! OMG!!

Then I took a nap, and cook some meatballs, and went for gym.

I'm very proud of myself *sobs* it's not easy to go to the gym. I even wondered why people would want to torture themselves in the gym.

And my plan is to take a bath, and read about back emf again before going to bed.

Goal: to read about back emf and find out how to control speed using back emf.

Had a tandem learning session with a student from Osaka University. It's a weekly thing. We basically just chatted for 2 hours.

Day 6-10 - Nothing done

Oh my, what day is it? I forgot to update this thing.

So on Saturday I bought a Logitech controller. (This one: http://gaming.logitech.com/en-sg/product/f310-gamepad)

It's only $32 so you have to understand how appealing it sounds to me. Then after that I installed a PSX emulator and downloaded a couple of games. And I spent the whole weekend replaying Digimon World 3.

On Monday I went to the lab to help them move from Control Lab to Advanced Robotics Lab, and then spent the rest of the day continuing Digimon 3. On Tuesday, I wanted to try the feeling of sleeping the whole day, so I did that. Then I went to Fairprice and spent 1.5 hr cooking some chicken curry.

Today I woke up and slept again and decided to continue working on ROS. So, here I am.
