European races
So, the main source I'm refering to in the following, is the book "Rassenkunde des deutschen Volkes“ written by Hans Günther in 1925. I own it as a book, the PDF you can find here:
https://archive.org/details/Guenther-Hans-Kleine-Rassenkunde-des-deutschen-Volkes-2/mode/2up
I've read a few other books, but these don't go as much into detail as Günter's work. Said book is mostly about races in Germany at that time, but he wrote other books as well. I did not read those yet. So the information given in the book might not be „up-to-date“, but still interesting and maybe useful to compare to genetic research we know from today (haplogroups)
Günther used a specific way of classification. He took different traits into consideration, such as skull shape, length, body shape and height, hair/eye/skin/lip color, facial structure and also personality. He classified 5 different European races (other authors sometimes used different names, he mentioned them as well). In the introduction he briefly describes the 5 different European races and their names.
1) Nordic race: tall, long skull, slim face, pronounced chin, soft and light hair, light eyes (in deep eye holes), nose with long nose bridge, rosy-pale skin. Other names used by other authors: „race nordique“ (author: Deniker), „teutonic race“ (Ripley), „homo europaeus“ (Linné)
2) „Westische Rasse“ (Western race): smaller grown, long skulled, slim face, less pronounced chin, soft brown/black hair, dark eyes in deep eye holes, tanned skin. Other names: „ibero = insulaire“ and „littorale ou atlonto = méditerranéene“ (Deniker), „eurafrican“ (Sergi), „mediteranean race“, „homo mediterraneus“. Günther used the name Western race, instead of Mediterranean race to better distingush them of different prehistoric distribution areas. (In western Norway, Scotland, Southern England and Ireland were people of this race proven).
3) Dinaric race: tall, short skulled, slim faced, steep back of the head, big/long nose, brown/black hair, browneyes, brown skin. Other names: „race adriatique ou dinarique“ (Deniker) (Other authors classified them as a special type of the Eastern race, or didn't mention them at all.)
4) „Ostische Rasse“ (Eastern race): smaller grown, short skulled, wide faced, small chin, short nose, flat nose bridge, brown eyes, yellowish-brown skintone. Other names: „race occidentale ou cévénole“(author Deniker), „alpine type“ (Ripley), „type celtique“(Broca), „avernian“ (Beddoe), „Eurasian“ (Sergi), „homo alpinus“. The name Eastern race implies an Asian connection, however it should not be seen as the same as mongoloid. „Alpine“ is misleading, because you won't only find them in Alpine regions, but also in in areas where both Eastern race and Dinaric race live. In the Alps different races live close to each other. This race shall not be mistaken with the „race orientale“.
5) Eastbaltic race: smaller grown, short skulled, wide faced, small chin, bulky lower jaw, wide nose, flat nose bridge, hard, light hair, slightly inclined, light eyes, pale skin. Other names: „Finnic race“ (authors: Gorotschenko, Silinitsch), „race orientale“ (Deniker).
Günther completely refuses to use the race names: Teutonic, Frankish, Germanic (synonymous for Nordic), Slavic, Finnic, Celtic, Sarmatic, Turanic, etc. – because he said they are misleading. As well as the term „Aryan“ for „Nordic“ seemed misleading to Günther.
We also have to distiguish language groups and race. In Europe, there are e.g. Germanic, Romanic, Slavic,... language groups and you would make a terrible mistake calling a blonde, blue eyed looking French man living in the Normandy a „Romanic“ guy. The same applies to Russians (Slavic) or Finns (Finnic Uiguric language group). Ordinary Germans would expect a 'Slavic' man to be medium tall, wide faced, with noticable cheekbones, however they would be very surprised, if he doesn't look like what they have expected, but instead men with 'Slavic' features are quite common in Germany, not only in Eastern Germany, where Slavic and Germanic languages are close to each other. The same with 'Romanic' people, who are stereotyped as dark haired and dark eyed, „passionate“ people, they are also common among Germans.Italians, Spaniards, French, Romanians, etc. ('Romanic') could as well look like the „Old Germans“, tall, blonde and blue eyed, as well as some Finns. The confusion between linguistic membership and race is misleading.
There are Germanic, Romanic, Slavic languages – but not a Germanic, Romanic, Slavic race. Language borders are never the same as racial borders. The same applies for nationalities, religion, etc. There is no Italian, Spanish, Greek, or English race. When we differentiate between language, folk, state, religion, how do we define „race“ and why? When we look at white, black, red-skinned people, it seems logical, but why do we differentiate between 5 different Europen races? Someone, who is not from Europe would start classifying people by their hair color (blonde, brown, etc.) because it is simply noticeable. The problem here is, where is the line between blonde and brown hair? Next thing is, there are tall and small blonde people, long skulled and short skulled blondes, blondes with blue eyes – and as a rare type blondes with brown eyes, blondes with soft hair, and blondes with hard hair. It would cause many sub-races and confusion when short skulled, dark haired parents get one long skulled, blonde child and one short skulled, dark-haired child. As a race, we can only sum up people who always create the same type of offspring.
Now, before I go into detail showing pictures of the different races, we will look at the distribution of light eyes, hair in Europe, average phenotypes and haplogroups. We can later compare Günther's descriptions with the phenotypes we see nowadays.
1) „Nordic“ or „Nordoid“
Nordic body shape of a man.
Nordic skull shape.
(Some people are descriped as pure nordic, some as mostly nordic.)
2) „Westisch“ or "Mediterranid"
1./2 show westisch & nordic, 3. westisch and black/ 4. westisch 5. westisch and black

3) Dinaric/ Dinarid
4) Ostisch, alpine, alpinoid
5) Baltic/ Baltid / East Europid
*6) addionaly, Günther mentions the „Fälisch“, faelid, „dalisch“ people
*7) Some people have Asian influence, their eyes often show an epicanthal fold
