The Cast of Skulduggery Pleasant: COMPLETE
168 characters in total. Well, I think it’s safe to say that I wasn’t expecting this project (which started back in October 2015) to be stretched out for this long as, going in, I thought that the first book would start off with 17 characters and then the numbers would significantly decrease as I journeyed through the rest of the series.
On average, I could expect 15 for each book with “Armageddon Outta Here” having the most at 38 total and “The Dying of the Light” featuring the debut of 3 characters in total… although it was only when I reached the book that I decided to include Alice and Darquesse here as their biggest moments are featured in the series finale.
As a side note, I do see this as a negative towards the Skulduggery Pleasant series as, much as I adore these books, I do think that in the end, Derek Landy had created far too many characters than he knew how to deal with. Although much is done during “The Dying of the Light” to tie up a lot of loose plot threads from past books and I am immensely satisfied as to how the Darquesse problem was resolved, there is also a lot of lingering “open-endedness” concerning certain character’s futures if they have one. The Harry Potter fandom thought that they had it bad with not knowing the ultimate fate of the secondary cast; SP’s China Sorrows (my no.1 favourite character) has, as her last scene in the book, her falling unconscious in a Sanctuary corridor! But, I digress…
If I had known how many characters I would be drawing over the next few months, I probably would of put this project off even longer than it took to complete it but I can’t deny that it has given me a huge amount of practice concerning the use of Manga Studio 5, character designing and drawing arms! It’s certainly given me more to think about when it comes to inking and shading and I’m excited to try out a few new techniques on future drawings. I am definitely glad that I took this on and I hope other SP fans are too!
P.S. The only thing that I feel that I goofed up on (apart from forgetting that Eliza Scorn and Vincent Foe are both energy throwers) is that Dr. Nye has small eyes. In his first appearance, only his pupils are described as being small and yellow so I imagined him with big Gollum eyes and tiny pupils but all other books following this appearance describe his whole eyeball as being small. Darn!
