Haunting Adeline Controversy
Note: Any feedback is welcome, iāve been talking to myself about this since the movie was announced.
On the topic of āHaunting Adelineā I will say that I do not care about most DDDNE content and I even engage in some surface level material myself. I do believe that fiction is the safe space to let all of your esoteric fantasies out, it provides the same relief as a BDSM club to me: a controlled and consensual place to express ones self, no matter how strange or unusual and the option to leave at any time.
I do not believe that it is the job of women/induviuals to refrain from making dark content because it āmakes men want to harm womenā aka āmen canāt control themselvesā. People are saying after Fifty Shades of Grey was released that men were accidentally choking their wives to the point of needing medical attention but is not the fault of the movie, that is the fault of the couple for not taking the proper precautions to make sure no one gets hurt by investing into sexual education that you should get before ever getting involved in any high risk kink or fetish (choking, knifeplay, waxplay, gunplay, etc.). Anyoneās actions cannot be excused by saying they harmed someone ābecause they saw it in a movieā. When Kate Moss said Euphoria made her relapse or when someone takes the life of another individual because they watched a slasher movie they are looked at as mentally unstable/disturbed. If you are in a place where watching a dark movie makes you want to harm people, including yourself, you are too mentally ill for the Internet. SEEK HELP!
With that being said, I do believe that writing dark fiction about real people (Harry Styles, The Sturniolo Triplets, etc.) is unacceptable and inhumane, especially in the context of DDDNE. And I also believe that movies that involve dark material should be heavily restricted. But, again people have cultivated consensual and healthy dark spaces in the DDDNE and BDSM community so if that is possible then so is separating fiction from reality.
Most people unironically have ships that are darker, but itās unnoticeable because it is in a fantasy realm. For example: Damon Salvatore from Vampire Diaries sexually abused and manipulated Caroline (according to his actor), who was 17 and the time or Lestat and Louis from IWAF also are an example of a dark romance couple that people ship. My point is most of this stuff is still hypocritically acceptable by some of the same audiences.ļæ¼ ļæ¼ļæ¼
So, stop giving men a pat on the back by blaming media when women have been reading dark content for years and most do not engage in it outside of the internet/their sexual life. I think that is an excuse for behavior.
Now, I do not support the funding or the making of this movie simply because I do not enjoy people ending up with their abusers, I generally donāt engage in published books that contain dark romance, and mainly the author is MAGA.
Also, quick note: talking about the authors, alleged history of being sexually abused as a reference to why she makes dark fiction and as a reference to why people read dark fiction is unnecessary. No one owes you a sob story as to why they write what they write, so making one is weird.
