Honestly, it surprises me that Kid and Maka and Black Star aren't all more weird about each other. What do you mean these were Kid's weird childhood friends and one of his first introductions to personhood but that's kind of ignored until later in the manga and completely left out of the anime. What do you mean Lord Death decided to make a second son at the same time Spirit had a daughter. What do you mean Black Star was brought to the DWMA on the SAME DAY Maka was born. What do you mean they have a star-crossed chosen family thing going on.
Like. Do you think they played house and pretended to be dogs together. Do you think about that. Do you think about his childhood and his humanity and yeah no wonder he's Like That look at what social pool they baptized him in, there was no way in Nevada he was going to come out lax and fully adjusted.
the “fuck canon everything is made up do whatever you want forever” approach to fandom can be fun in small doses but i find that subscribing a little too hard to that attitude can lead to this belief that serious engagement with and analysis of a text is an act of no fun self-flagellation when that couldn’t be further from the truth. analysis is literally fun

SoMa but she's using his desperation for validation and attention against him in all corners of his life and it hurts and he aches but he knows no one else will ever hold him like she does.
SoMa but she needs him and she can't have him and if she opens up all the way he'll surely destroy her so she's going to get upset at getting what she wants and he's going to apologize while continuing to give it.
Also, something funny I want to play with in the Ad Mortem AU is that Kid's experience with and around humans is very limited, both growing up and in the time of the story. That is to say, he doesn't understand how they work or function or what they need to function.
That is to say, Liz and Patty get to lie to him all the time, and, who is going to call them out on it? If Patty says she needs access to smores on a weekly basis or she'll starve to death, who's he to say she won't? Elizabeth says she needs three days off a week, or her knees will deteriorate to dust—he can *suspect* this is untrue, but who is he gonna go to?
His dad, and admit he doesn't have a grasp on how to manage his own weapons? Another human working underneath him, and let them see his ignorance, his weakness? Maka, and ruin her image of him? Black Star? Not happening. Look in a book and try to quote facts back at the Thompsons? He's going to be the world's most gaslit demigod.
A version of Kid that is so emotionally constipated and socially isolated that you could convince him that humans hibernate (how the Thompsons do absolute jackshit in the winter and get away with it).
