“Mizzzzzz Monaaay-honayyyy.” She’s blinking up at her, a Cheshire grin drawing at the ends of her lips. A black cat anxiously weaves between the legs of the chair she’s perched upon. Motorcycle boots are perched upon a card table. A full deck rests in her hands. “Come to bring me some luck? I’m hopin’ to score big!” The only other players at the table are skeleton dummies caked in dust.

the trees all look the same. the broken line between you and an empty lane seems endless. you swear you keep seeing a white figure out of the corner of your eye, but every time you check your rear view mirror it’s gone.
the leather upholstery behind you creaks, and you realize you’ve been so focused on the trees on either side of the road that you have yet to glance in your backseat.

“Thought I’d pop in the neighborhood,” Holly greets from the doorway with arms flung into the air. A flash of lightning illuminates her in a momentary halo. She’s soaked to the bone, long stringy orange highlights clinging to her face. “...I also owe dear Vechernyaya a favor, so... Yeah.” Her eyes followed the old god a god she once looked up to. She wished they made a horror movie about him. She’d eat that shit up her disciples of all things spooky too. “Chicago ain’t lookin’ too good, my friend. How do you stand it here?”

“No one really comes to Joshua anymore,” she remarks to the woman who had just come out of the gas station. Crows multiplied around the rusty establishment, cawing out, looking for Holly’s acknowledgement. She’s sitting on a wooden bench beside the window, chewing on a long Twizzler. “You must be an out-of-towner!”

“You work for Mr. World, don’t you?” She’s reclining in the hookah lounge that’s blasting absurdly crude Hungarian death metal. She takes a long draw from nozzle, releasing pungent rose and iron aromas into the air. She’s nonchalantly flips a page in the Apex magazine before scanning over him with a glossy, intrigued gaze.
“You’re one of ‘em new gods Mr. Wednesday is goin’ on about.” Holly herself was once considered a ‘new god’, but she had long strayed from that group, feeling far more comfortable with her elder brother, Samhain. The older gods were so much more... Real. Holly reaches out, plucks a chip from her open bag of Lays, and pops it in her mouth. “What do I owe the pleasure?” She crunches loudly.

this was … embarrassing ? alex holds back a roll of his eyes. however, he was the one to bite, wasn’t he ? & it would be more awkward to not play along at this point. a heavy exhale precedes his words, ❝ uh … i don’t know. uh, red ? ❞ he glances down at her palms, incredulously, ❝ i’m gonna be really mad if we end up summoning the devil. ❞
“Devil ain’t got shit on me,” she mumbles just under her breath. A patient smile warms her pallid countenance. “Alright. Now close your eyes. Just keep thinkin’ of your color.” She gingerly cups his hands between hers. She squeezes her eyes shut for a moment, then slowly peels back her hands for the big reveal. Settling in his palm is a red. heart-shaped lollipop. A small red ribbon is tied halfway down the white stick. “Ta-dah~!”

a brow quirks upwards as atticus eyes her skirt. she made her own clothes? a slight hum of appreciation escapes him as he nods. “impressive.”
though, the half-hearted smile that had settled onto his features quickly dissipates at her curious questions. in the midst of light-hearted conversation, he had nearly forgotten his reason for being here. he turns his gaze to the farm house just up the road from their perch. “there’s a man in the backyard burying the body of his wife.” from where they sat, neither could see him, but atticus knew he was still there. “sometimes fate is just a CRUEL BITCH.”
“I noticed,” she replies simply. “It was my doing. The death of the wife, I mean technically.” After her brother was killed by the jaded townspeople who turned to a different god, Holly wanted to exact her revenge. When the people of Joshua refused to do another yearly harvest sacrifice, she cursed the town in the name of her brother, Samhain. “Famine has infected this land because the people are selfish and greedy and ungrateful,” she explains with soft nonchalance. “The birds were dropped from the sky and the river has run dry.”

atticus could hear the distant growl of thunder echoing from miles away. the girl, as condescending as she may have been, was right. refraining from any sort of outward reaction, atticus simply lets his legs swing from the edge of the slanted tin roof, shoes knocking lightly against the side of the old barn. “—-something tells me i’ll be fine.” the dull thud of old boots against the metal barn was drowned out by another boom of thunder. the slightest smile works it’s way onto his face as he looks up to the umbrella being held out above his head. “cute umbrella.”
“Thanks! I made it myself,” she states proudly, her chest puffing a tad. A grin cocks at the corner of her mouth. “I’m quite crafty, you see. I even made the skirt that I’m wearing.” She pinches the black, tutu fabric, pulling it out to show off the lace and ruffles. “But enough about me. I wanna know about y o u, stranger.”
She was simply itching to know what he was- why he came here. He was a RARITY, she could feel it in her bones. “What made you come out all the way to Joshua, Wisconsin?”

“Are you from around here?” ‘Here’ was Joshua, Wisconsin a farm town built on sacrifice to the harvest. Long ago, her brother, Samhain, would accept yearly sacrifices in return for a promise of bountiful harvest and vitality. The people got their crops. Her brother got his blood. However, lately, people were losing their drive. As much as Holly adored her holiday of Halloween, she wanted to see her brother thrive off sacrifices for his harvest season. So, Holly was on the hunt for a sacrifice since the people of Joshua had grown jaded and lazy.
Holly tongues the inside of her mouth, studying the other with calculated ardor. “....This town is a shit-stain, don’tcha agree?” How DARE the people not give sacrifices to her kin? She would curse them all... But for now, she would sit at the Ashbury Diner, making small talk with the first person she saw.

“Have you lost your way?” Holly stands before him in the tall grass of the forest clearing where the serpents slithered and the cicadas hummed. She looked curiously upon him, studying the man with eerie fervor. She remains stagnant, bare feet twitching upon the soft bed of dirt and leaves. “Are you traveling somewhere? Or just out for a moonlit saunter?”

“The pancakes here are my absolute fave,” she tells the diner customer at the counter beside her. She had arrived in the town of Joshua that morning a sleepy, farm town where a harvest festival was soon to take place. The festival, was, after all, for her and her brother for the celebration of bounty and vitality. No one would know that this tiny thing was a sheep in wolf’s clothing. She knew every resident and every nook and cranny of the town, yet no one would recognize her. Blending in was a must. “You an out-of-towner? Never saw the likes of you before.”
