Letter from Fryderyk Chopin to Jan Białobłocki

i like this letter because it's great for thinking about letter writing social etiquette from this period, if you're into that sort of thing. that's because chopin's just not very good at letter writing yet (he's 16). it's a skill that anyone has to develop because it's a really different way of holding a conversation. he does get better over time, and even in a year or two, we already see more mature letters from him. but here u can guess at the kinds of things that he believes are expected of him:

the letter should not be too short. chopin is using a lot of words without really saying anything concrete in part because it'll be nice for his friend to open a long letter. a letter that's too short may seem rude, like maybe he didn't want to spend a lot of time on it. in future letters, he often comments on the length of the letter he's writing (e.g., i have to end the letter because i'm running out of paper, or because i'm writing on the back, or because i'm squeezing too many words in, etc), or on the length of the letter he received, either expressing gratitude that it was long or jokingly chastising the correspondent for making it too short. in one letter from 1831, he literally counts the number of lines in the letter he received

2. you should establish that you welcome the correspondence. chopin complains that his friend hadn't written to him, not because he's genuinely upset about it, but because it lets him know that he's eager to correspond. sometimes when you get a letter, it's a chore more than anything because now you have to take time to write a response, take your response to the post and probably pay for the postage, stocking paper in the house is itself non-trivial. it's a process. by insisting that he's really anticipating getting his friend's letter, he establishes that he's happy to put the effort in to maintain their communication. this is a tricky one because when other people complain in letters to him that he should write more to them, it's easy for biographers to take it literally and assume that chopin hates writing letters, and in fact chopin as a reluctant letter writer is canon in the field. not sure how much of that is actually true, and how much is just his correspondents' social etiquette.

3. you're expected to write something kind of literary for a friend's birthday or name day. as young children, the chopin kids wrote poems to their parents for their name days. even in modern polish society, when you give someone your wishes for a holiday or their birthday, it's pretty involved, it's on a somewhat elevated level of social communication, and it takes forever. if your wishes are not elaborate enough, it suggests you think they are not worth your effort. possibly younger generations have always thought of this as somewhat tedious (as they do today), and chopin tends to wish his closest friends with the "we know each other so well, you already know what's in my heart for you" shorthand.

Currently watching: so I've spent the last 3 weeks watching iwtv (caught up on the first 2 seasons and then The Vampire Lestat) and i'm kind of still processing that lol

Currently reading: I usually read a few different books at the same time because I like some variety. Right now it's mostly the second volume of Alan Walker's Chopin biography and a book about the history of Łódź. I'm also rereading Bolesław Prus's "Lalka" because I read it in high shool and there's a movie and a netflix show coming out in autumn

Current obsession: apart from liking every single iwtv gifset i see on my dash, none

Currently working on: so I dont want to jinx it but I'd love to go back to learning the piano (and I haven't had a class in 20+ years). I gave up as a child because I got bored of practising, got interested again when I was in my 20s but thought it was "too late" for me to learn it "properly" (I know). Now I'm in my 30s I stopped caring about that and want to do something about it. Wish me luck <3
