i think a lot about moments like this where… it sounds like rimmer’s actually doing something quite complicated, intelligent and officery?
always makes me wonder if he actually does know enough to be in one of those positions on red dwarf.
i mean, if you deep it, years into the series, the four of them have had to basically do every role on the ship. but in moments like this… rimmer does actually sound like he could be a good leader, but only if he doesn’t realise he’s leading. the minute he thinks he is, or that he’s doing something super advanced, he’s fucks it up or behaves like a prick.
i guess what i’m saying is if you secretly did the infamous exam on him, but did it question at a time over the weeks, and didn’t ever tell him you were testing him (so he won’t panic) he might actually pass?
Love this OP.
I'm a strong believer that Rimmer knows way more than he gives himself credit for, and its his neuroticism that gets in the way of his achievements, not just long-term, but daily as well. When he's not concentrating on achieving and being the best of the best; he's just working as a member of the team, and he fits into the role so much better. I feel like the boys see this too but they wouldn't let on that they do, hence though why when it really comes down to it, they don't question him in situations like this and just let him get on with.
He's not trying to prove anything and that's where a lot of these more officery mannerisms start coming into play, and I think the boys tease and lose more respect for him when he's trying to 'play officer', or at least what he thinks an officer should act like.
I bet you think this song is about you

Just throwing my two cents in here to say that it's absolutely fine if you don't ship Rimmer and Lister, but if you truly believe that these two have no chemistry at all or a dynamic that could eventually, or even inevitably, lead to a romantic relationship, then I'm afraid we will heavily have to agree to disagree.
These two have one of the most realistic and genuine relationships I've seen on screen. They are literally stranded in deep space together with only each other for sane and like-minded company. Setting their differences aside, they are the two most congenial people left on that ship, and the idea that with over 3 million and + years of being in each others company they might develop a deep fondness for each other, or even something more than that, is entirely realistic and plausible whether you would like to admit it or not. Hell, whether the characters themselves would like to admit it or not (because lets be honest most people don't dream about tonguing down their bunkmate just because they miss them lmao.) If you believe that their entire relationship remains based purely on a mutual hatred of one another and nothing more (platonic or otherwise) then thats well within your right, but dare I respectfully say you haven't been watching close enough.
As a bisexual girly, its always a comfort to find representation in media, but I personally find it very hard to ship characters that I don't sense it in to begin with. (Not that that matters of course, after all shipping is supposed to be fun) but I do believe that representation exists in places where it can bloom, and I'm sorry, but in my opinion it absolutely exists between these two.
It may not be canon, and that’s cool, but that doesn’t mean it’s not believable. While being lost in deep space with another person is a far fetched concept in itself, these kinds of situations can and could happen to absolutely anyone, regardless of the circumstances.
rest in peace rob grant
thank you for co-creating red dwarf, which whether intentional or not has some of the most comforting and relatable autism rep i’ve came across. never have i seen myself represented more clearly than in rimmer – which, on reflection is probably something should be concerned about, but nonetheless, it is comforting to me every day.
you and doug naylor created a character like that for me and millions of other people. you put a black scouser in space to represent the whole human race.
red dwarf was hilarious, it was thought-provoking, and it was yours.
Rest in peace, Rob. Thank you so much for creating a show, a world, and characters that are so special to me ♡
