‘When Pope John Paul II stepped down from his Alitalia plane at Warsaw International Airport on the afternoon of Thursday, 16 June 1983, he knelt and kissed the ground. ‘He had done it before,’ writes Kevin Ruane, ‘but this was a special moment. Kissing the soil of Poland, he said, was like kissing a mother’s hand. For Poland was a special mother, one who had suffered a great deal and kept on suffering anew, and, for that reason, was deserving of a special love. The Pope asked all who were suffering to feel especially close to him. He did so, he said, in the name of Christ who had said: I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.

The Pope’s sermons reminded the people of their fundamental rights, that there was a higher power above the communist regime.’
