I have recently rewatched Kipo & the Age of Wonderbeast before it leaves Netflix in a couple of weeks. I remember being excited for this series when it came out, and when each season was announced, it was the only thing that got me through COVID-19. It breaks my heart to see my favorite series leave Netflix. I really hope this series, along with other animated series that left this year, finds another place to call home. Thank you to the crew of KATAOW for all the memories, the characters, the music, the art style, and the beautiful story.
I'm sad Gretchen doesn't get a dress, but everything else about her is perfect. I love her crown and the flowers on her clothes. And her attitude. And her immediately stepping in mud. (All of the character introductions are so good).
I love the Bear and Wolf carving hidden behind a tapestry! It looks beautiful, but it's also such a cool way of showing the history that is being buried during the Lion's reign! And the scene works well to condense Bergan's long history with the Wolf while explaining why he's reluctant to help Drew now.
The scene with Gretchen and Lucas is also well-done! I like that we see Lucas continue to be awful while Gretchen tries to make up excuses for him so early on. She knows he's horrible! But she has to hope that he will be less horrible to her, even as we see that that's not the case. It makes her sympathetic even at this stage of her character arc (and showcases her cleverness, too, since she still can manipulate him!).
(I respect orange guy giving up and selling the broken wood of his stand as firewood. Truly, he is an innovator)
Vankaskan asking Hector who was lord of Windfell in his quiz hurt!! I did not expect to be sad about the Hawks this early!
(And why did he say Count Carsten? Would Baron Griffyn have been included in an adaptation of book 3? If not, what would that mean for Shah? I am now just thinking about her)
Oh Vincent how I despise you. We skip straight to his book 2 characterization here, and he's just as despicable as he was there (although we have no moments of sympathy for him).
I'm sad that we don't see Redmire (because it would have looked so cool), but I get why this part was condensed. And I think Vankaskan is just as likely to wield something illegal as a high-ranking member of the Lionguard, so that part also works.
So, I’ve mentioned this in an old reblog from months ago, but I believe that Gretchen not having a dress (at least for most of her screen time as we do see her in a wedding dress in the finale) was due to a limitation of the art style.
The show animates characters on 2s instead of the usual 1s. And there’s no smearing. Just dynamic pose to dynamic pose. Arguably they do this to replicate stop motion animation. However, flowing materials in this style is very difficult to pull off, especially on a tv budget. And most cgi shows don’t even try it regardless.
That’s also why characters don’t have long hair. Gretchen is the best example of this, as her curled locks are confined to a long braid. Which is much easier to animate. Though you can’t convince me that it wouldn’t unfurl the moment any of those bands pop off.
As for naming Carsten instead of Griffin? That’s probably because, since the quiz is about the current ruling lords, Hector named the highest ranking lord he read about. As Count, Carsten would outrank Baron Griffin. He likely was the ruling lord at the time Leopold took over (and that was only 16 years past in the show’s timeline, fairly recent history in the grand scale).
Hi, I hope you're doing OK. I have a werewolf-related question and hope that you can help me with it. What timeframe do you think the books were set? I am kind of struggling to figure it out, and with my next-gen fic I kind of want to have them in clothes that kind of fit the era that it would have happened in. Thanks!
I’m doing well thanks. Hope the same for you.
For most of my readings of the books, and my own research for Truth and Love, I’ve typically used the 1400s as my reference point.
Primarily this is due to the main literary influence on Wereworld. To the point that it’s advertised as such on the publisher’s own website.
George R R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.
ASoIaF is heavily inspired by the War of the Roses which took place from 1455 to 1487.
That being said, a little thing to note if you’re having the cast venture into wider Lyssia. Even if it’s a Renaissance or Post Renaissance setting, for the majority of people (namely those outside of major cities) it’s a medieval setting. They just might see more fancy statues than their ancestors did.
I've been seeing the poster for Ice Age 3 on Twitter and I just had to do this drawing! Vala was kinda difficult to draw especially when the references I've found of her are hard to tell with the mist in the episode. I'm so happy with how this turned out, hope you all like it too. 🐺🐍
What if the characters of Tangled, Trollhunters, How to Train Your Dragon, and Wolf King joined together? I've been wanting to make a crossover that makes sense for years, and now I finally thought of one! It stars Rapunzel, accompanied by Pascal; Hiccup, accompanied by Toothless; Jim Lake Jr.; and Drew Ferran. I kinda want to write an AU story with these characters, but I'm still deciding whether to go ahead with the idea. Plus, I'm still thinking of and working on a group name for them. But until then, I'm probably just going to do some doodles just for the fun of it. What do you all think of this new crossover group idea? Let me know what you think in the comments.
I don't own the rights to the characters; they belong to their rightful owners: The Walt Disney Company, Dreamworks Pictures & Animation Television & Lime Pictures.
Just a little message for @netflix, please renew/save Wolf King, it's one of my favorite animated series. I refuse to give up hope for a renewal, long live the wolf! 👑🐺
Does anyone agree with these two images, because I certainly do. I also made a blank one if anyone is interested in using it, you can credit me if you like. @netflix
After I don't know how many hours, here is my finished Wheatley cosplay! I generally like it and am pretty happy with how it turned out, apart from the wig—but we don't need to talk about that. Anyway, here's my Wheatley cosplay! Who should I do next? (Because I am definitely making another one; it was fun for the most part). And I am sorry for the quality of the images; they were taken on a phone and I have Tumblr on my computer
Wanted to make revised designs now that we have design influence from the Wolf King show! I’ve just done the main 4 here because I needed them for some projects I’m working on, but I’ll probably make more as needed.
I’ll share my thought process behind my designs and each character has a beginning of series and towards the end of series design. Feel free to use any of these just make sure to tag me!
Be sure to let me know what you think!
Designs under cut:
Drew Ferran
Early series:
I love Drew’s show design and the Inuit influence his adoptive mother has! I kept his skintone, made his hair more of a night sky color instead of a dark brown, and greyed his eyes more to match his book description. For clothing, I went for more book accuracy on this as well. I scrapped his fur coat because I don’t like it. I kept his blue belt thing the show gave him because I liked that, and removed most of his other clothing since in the book he is straight up naked aside from his cloak. Speaking of cloak, I gave him the Green cloak that Hogan lends him. I also gave Drew facial and arm scars from his fight with Vanmorten as well as a large stomach scar where Mack stabbed him with the Wolfshead Blade. My design for the blade itself is pretty consistent for what we see in the show and on book covers.
Late series:
Drew is described as looking far older than he is by the end of the series, with greying hair and stubble which I incorporated here. As well as his hair being longer, so I gave him a wolfcut-ish style obviously. Now that he isn’t a 16 year old lost in the woods he gets better gear and armor as well, along with his wolf-grey cloak he has in the books. I kept his blue shirt and belt thing once again for the same reasons as before. He also has his wolf pin from the Wolf’s Council in book 2. He of course, has Moonbrand and the White Fist now, and I coordinated their colors. The orbs on Moonbrand represent the full moon of course. He has plenty more scars with a nicked ear as well as facial scars from when he was burned and lost his vision, and greyed pupils to represent that eye damage.
Wereform:
Drew’s werewolf form in WolfKing was pretty similar to my old design for him. I mostly kept the design the same as my old one with some minor marking and color adjustments.
Whitley
Early series:
I didn’t really mind the clothes they gave Whitley. They do feel like something a ranger in training would wear. The only differences I made was swap the orange and green so that she has more of that Brackenholme color. I also made the design look more like tree branches than it does in the show. I kept her staff more or less the same as well. To me more book accurate, I designed Whitley herself to look more androgynous since a big part of her character is how she passes as a boy. I kept her locs but got rid of the killmonger cut WolfKing gave her, and changed it to a different androgynous style that I felt suited her better.
Late Series:
No longer in training, Whitley gets better gear as well as her Brackenholme green cloak. I made sure to keep the bits of orange in her clothing despite this change so that she still has her ties to Hedgemore. She has her Wolf’s Council pin as well now. In the books, Whitley wears braids, so I gave her a more androgynous style of braids now as well.
Wereform:
Since we only get partial transformations for her in Wolf King, I mostly referenced Bergan’s werebear design for hers. She of course gets more beefed up and keeps the green eyes she and her father get while transforming in the show.
Hector
Early series:
I’m quite happy with hector’s design in the series, but not so happy with the clothing he wears, which is where I made the most changes. For Hector himself, the only thing I changed was to give him dark brown hair to match his book description. I kept his star-vest from the show since I love how it references him being a magician but also his interest in astronomy. Hector’s clothing in the show is pretty much all black. In the books his clothing becomes all black over time during his corruption arc, so I gave him a lighter colored shirt here as well as his Redmire brown cloak from the books. I didn’t like his weird mechanical dodecahedron tool box Wolf King gave him, so I gave him a more traditional magisters bag instead.
Late Series:
Hector gets darker clothing now. He has a tattered black cloak to replace his brown. He has his boar broach he inherited from his father after his death as well. Of course he has his necrotic hand, with the hole in the middle from an arrow piercing through. I neglected to give him neck scars from The Host, but trust me they will be there on any subsequent drawings. Hector’s hair has been cut shorter and is no longer tied up in a bun as Hector stops caring about his appearance. Hector is also more gaunt as described in the books. Finally, I gave him a blue tinge to his eyes as a reference to being overcome with necromancy as spirits have blue eyes in the books. Hector doesn’t get a Wereform since he only ever partially transforms, and I don’t need to design such a thing yet.
Gretchen
Early series:
In my opinion, Gretchen’s design was the worst adapted. The rose design on her clothes, her makeup, and her hair pieces from the show I did like, so I kept them here. I gave Gretchen Green eyes as well as freckles to be more accurate, and made her braid more prominent. Instead of her ugly jumpsuit, I gave her a red dress like she’s described as wearing in the books. Overall I wanted to make her look like the rich jerk she is in the early series.
Late series:
(Had to combine image to avoid going over image max)
Gone is the makeup and finery. Gretchen is a warrior now. Her hair is mostly loose to symbolise her becoming more wild and her rejection of noble society. She has lost the dress and replaced it for more practical clothing. In the books, the Harriers don’t have a designated color for their cloaks, so I decided to go with a green because it looked the best and could represent Gretchen’s Connection to Brackenholme (albeit it’s a different shade). I added a bandage on Gretchen’s left leg from her injury in Bray, as well as her crutch she uses after the injury. She also gets scars on her wrists and neck from Lucas in book 6.
Wereform:
The fox! The scar from the injury on her leg is visible now too, and I gave her green eyes once again. I based her facial markings on the ones she gets during her partial transformation in Wolf King.
Happy Friday, everyone! I just recently found a fan comic of Wolf King called “Missing Royalty” & I absolutely love this comic! The art style is incredibly beautiful, the story is intriguing, and it gets more exciting with every page, & overall, it's just great to see these characters interact again. Seeing this comic makes me feel more optimistic that Wolf King will come back for a renewal. If you're a fan of this series, I would 100% recommend you read it. It’s on a website called Comic Fury by Emily the Storier. Long live the Wolf! 🐺👑
How do you feel about drews abdication? I personally wasn't happy with it but where do you lie?
War of the Werelords spoilers for show only fans
So, I'm of two minds with this plot point.
On the one hand, I understand the sentiment/idea behind it. It's meant to be this symbolic stepping down of Werelords as the predominant ruling class. And giving a voice to the people of Lyssia that are most affected by the conflicts the Werelords had wrought. The idea behind it is sound.
Now come the collection of 'buts' that muddy the execution.
Narratively, throughout the series, Drew is growing as a leader. Like several plot lines in the series (and through most of WotW) the pay off is seemingly clear. Yet, most go unfulfilled or have the rug pulled out underneath them.
Drew and Trent don't get a reunion, Whitley dies, Vega (we don't know his fate), a not insignificant amount of antagonists are still alive and kicking, etc. Drew abdicating the throne is just another sheet on the pile. If it was the only swerve plot line ending, it wouldn't be a problem. But because it's on top of everything else it leaves Drew's story on a very unsatisfying note.
If Whitley was alive then the decision would free them from duties neither wanted. If he and Trent had their reunion then it could open the possibility of them being brothers again. But neither of those happen.
As such, Drew abdicating the throne feels like he's giving up. He lost the love of his life, his best friend, and we don't know in what state Trent will be if he's healed.
Once again, it all comes back to my thoughts on WotW as a whole. For 90% of the book, it's good. It has highs to match NoS and SoS, but it's those final few chapters that mellow the entire experience.
The abdication just feels like another idea that was thrown into the story as the deadline for the final book was coming up. (For the record, I do not have confirmation from Jobling himself if this was the case. It's just been a theory of mine.)
Today marks 1 year since Wolf King season 1 debuted on Netflix.
Bringing to life Wereworld, the book series that made me want to be a writer.
Now, a year later, I'm working on my first manuscript for my first book, Paleotheos.
I commissioned this art from Marin Smith (@strikixit on Instagram) at Megacon Orlando. Here's hoping we get to see more of this wonderful world brought to life.
