harbingerdoll:
“Alto should have given you better advice than that, and I’m not really the best one to practice on anyway since I’m not human. You’re right; you’re not doing so hot either. I hate people touching me, and besides, everyone is supposed to be scared of me, but…you’re not. You don’t seem to hate me either, and it’s really freaky!”
Dorothy was so used to instantaneous fear and hatred that being met with anything else from someone who didn’t know her felt extremely abnormal. No matter how many times she turned it over in her mind, it didn’t make any sense…except for one seemingly far-fetched explanation. As difficult as it was for her to believe what Eve was saying, she didn’t exactly have any evidence to disprove it, leading her to think that maybe—just maybe—Eve was telling the truth. Her shoulders slumped slightly in resignation, and she relaxed her posture to be a little more open. For now, she would accept this attempt at friendship and try, but if Eve did anything to ruin it, she was determined that there would be blood spilled one way or another.
Eve’s mischievous grin grabbed Dorothy’s attention, and she leaned in closer to watch, not bothering to correct the assumption that she was human—that could be done later. This was something she just had to see, and she wasn’t about to interrupt the process by saying anything. The little black flame captivated her, and she carefully peeked out from under her hood to watch as it danced and flickered to and fro atop the other girl’s palm. It gradually took shape under Eve’s guidance, though Dorothy was really starting to wonder where the ‘sparkly’ factor would come from until she saw the pretty new crystal resting in Eve’s hand. For a few short seconds, she was speechless until…
“It’s so cute!~” Her eyes wide with wonder, she gasped and reached for it without a second thought, ignoring the warnings given to her. Gloved fingers snatched it up, careful to minimize contact with Eve’s hand, and she stared at the heart-shaped jewel in awe until she began to fee the heat of it through her gloves.
“Ow…!” Letting out a yelp, she fumbled with it until she was holding it by its cord instead to minimize the source of the intense heat, then dangled it in front of her, flicking her wrist slightly to make the new qualia rotate and sparkle. “It’s soooo pretty!~ You said I could touch it, so that means it’s mine now, right? I wanna keep it!”
She was too focused on admiring the crimson crystal to realize the significance of what she’d just said, but at the moment, she didn’t really care either.
Not human? That couldn’t possibly be true. The only non humans around here were herself, Marie, and monsters. And a few stray Angels still milling around. Eve didn’t detect anything irregular from Dorothy. Heck, she didn’t give off the same feeling the Witches did. The Witches had this special aura to them, like Eve could pick out which ones were hers. Or so they were until Alto came along and tuned them away. Totally not bitter about that. Nope. Not. At. All.
But the fact still remained that Dorothy was human, and if she wasn’t she did a brilliant job of masking it so that Mother Qualia couldn’t even tell. “Dorothy, I don’t understand. I can’t sense any magic from you. If not human then what are you?”
She was pleased Dorothy liked the qualia she just made, but Eve couldn’t help but feel a lot more apprehensive as soon as it was out of her hands. That qualia was new with fresh power probably begging to be released. She only made it for the sake of a demonstration and intended on either hiding it in her room or destroying it (probably the former, she would hate to get rid of the first qualia to be seen in a few millennia). Qualias would only work with highly empathetic girls and Eve had a feeling Dorothy didn’t have much empathy in her. Especially if she had a thing for slicing and mincing other people up.
Technically Eve didn’t have to worry about Dorothy keeping it. But she had an ominous feeling about letting Dorothy have it. What did Eve value more, making a friend and risking something awful, or yanking it out of her hands and ruining any chance at bonding?
...This definitely wasn’t going to end well.
“...I don’t see why not. Please be careful with it, though. I shouldn’t be making qualias out of boredom so let’s keep this a secret between us, okay? ... That’s the blood qualia. First qualia to be made in thousands of years. I hope you understand how important it is to take care of. It’s not an ordinary shiny object.”
harbingerdoll:
“Yeah, it was really weird. People are supposed to be scared of me, not laugh at me!” Any sort of laughter directed at her perplexed her unless it was of the condescending variety, but for some reason, Eve’s laughter seemed to be born from amusement, not condescension. It was something Dorothy just couldn’t understand, and from underneath her hood, her brows furrowed in frustration. She wasn’t funny; she was terrifying!
…Wait a second. Maybe Eve was making fun of her after all.
“H-Hey! It’s too late for that now! You better not be mocking me, or I’ll seriously mince you up into unrecognizable pieces!” That little display of false fear grated on the Harbinger’s nerves, and her fingers twitched at her sides against her hips, itching to grab hold of her chainsaw. She clenched her teeth together, inwardly teetering on the edge of temptation to throw caution to the wind and attack even though she knew it wouldn’t do any good. Only Eve’s apology held her back, and she let out another quiet huff while the girl in front of her marveled at her hood. “I bet he wouldn’t make anything for you.”
“…Stop confusing me! Are you trying to bully me, or are you actually trying to do something sappy like be my friend? Which is it, huh?!” The words left her mouth in a quick burst before she’d even realized it, an expression of the unease and confusion welling up inside her. One minute Eve was pissing her off, and in the next minute, she wanted to smile, almost as if she felt somewhat…happy. She couldn’t explain how or why, and it was infuriating! She still didn’t trust the other girl yet, but the part of her that wanted to had—regrettably, in her opinion—grown bigger after a few minutes of conversation. It wasn’t fair!
After a moment of silent fuming and mulling over the distracting thoughts swirling around in her mind, she spoke up again, though quieter this time. “I haven’t tried making things like that before, but that’s because I don’t know how. I’ve watched Hilda sing to make her crystals, and I figured out how to decorate my clothes on my own, but no one’s ever taught me how to make something pretty and sparkly that’s all mine. If you can’t teach me, then you better show me!”
Eve mulled over Dorothy’s words, watching her with a perplexed expression. So Dorothy wanted Eve to fear her, yet the moment she tried to play along she took offense? Yeesh, humans were complicated. When did communicating get so hard? It was so much easier when all she had to do was tell Xeno-- Klaus what to do and he got it done. She didn’t have to work for his affection, she ingrained it within him. But Eve knew she was allowed any more dollies and she had to actually try and form bonds with the knights. Easier said than done when she was five thousand years out of practice.
“...I mean no offense or to bully you, Dorothy. I’m trying to get a better understanding how people talk with one another. Alto says talking about common interests is a good start. So out of those two options... I think I’m trying to befriend you. But with an outburst like that, I take it I’m not doing well.”
When prompted about making shiny things, Eve couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement within her. Ah, how many millennia had it been since she last created a qualia? Maybe this was just the outlet she needed. If she wasn’t permitted any more dollies, perhaps she could channel that desire and urge into a qualia. It might help get rid of that itch to destroy something. Eve took a quick glance around the area to make sure it was clear then grinned mischievously. “Pay close attention. You’re the first human to witness this creation.”
Eve clapped her hands together and steadily pulled them apart. Within her palms a black flame began to sprout to life. It sputtered and twitched but with the growing distance of her hands it complied and allowed itself to grow with it. Eve pulled one hand back and allowed the black flame to dance in the palm of her other hand. Eve inspected the flame, pursing her lips together as she considered what type of power to imbue within it. Canting her head she used her free hand to begin molding the flame into a shape. Fingers nudged and pinched, shaping the fire into a smokey black mold floating in her palm. Satisfied with her creation Eve smiled to herself and covered it back up, bringing it to her lips. Closing her eyes briefly Eve blew into her cupped hands, gradually drawing it away from her mouth and withdrawing a hand. Wisps of black smoke evaporated between her fingers and when it cleared a deep red crystal attached to a cord sat in her palm. It took the shape of a heart but with a droplet carved into the center. It emitted a faint glow along with a bit of a steam from having been fire minutes prior.
Positively beaming Eve outstretched her hand to Dorothy for her to see. “Ta da! I wouldn’t recommend touching it yet, it might, ah... scorch you. But once it cools down you’re free to touch it!”
harbingerdoll:
“W-Wait…! Why did you just laugh?! That wasn’t a joke! I was being serious! You’re weird for laughing…” Dorothy couldn’t remember the last time anyone had giggled after hearing a direct threat from her, and she had been completely serious too! If she weren’t dealing with Eve in particular, her threat was one that she would have easily—and gladly—carried out. The words of agreement were the only thing that helped soothe her temper back down to a more reasonable level, and she huffed, nodding her head and causing the rabbit ears of her hood to bob with the movement.
“Exactly. Bows and ruffles are good, but something sparkly or shiny would be even better!” Though she was still annoyed with Eve, she couldn’t quite stop the corners of her mouth from turning upwards again. She was proud of the way she’d accessorized her adorable outfit with gold, silver, and a few glittering rhinestones, and she was equally proud that the clothes she valued so highly had been made special, just for her. “Dante made it for me, just like he made the rest of my outfit. I wasn’t going to wear any heavy, ugly armor, so I had Dante make me something super cute instead!~ He made it, and I decorated it.~”
“Oh, was it weird?” Eve canted her head, raising an eyebrow. She couldn’t stop herself from giggling at first. Eve simply loved it whenever humans were stupid enough to fight back against her. Their taunts and threats were so amusing and never failed to entertain her. It was rare anyone tried to cross God anymore, Dorothy’s reaction was refreshing. Still, Eve decided to play along with her threat. “Here, let me fix that.”
Eve held her hands up defensively as if to shield her face, and curled back. “No, don’t slice my hands off! How will I eat cupcakes if I don’t have any hands?! Eek!”
...Pfft. Snrk. Here come the giggles again. “Eheh... My apologies, Dorothy, it appears I cannot react to your threat accordingly.”
Resuming her previous upright position, Eve looked over Dorothy’s hood with new wonder. Dante made it? Let’s see, which human was that.... One of the red heads, yes, was that the one with the nasty attitude? Aside from Veronica. Dante was a male name. Imagining that aggressive Harbinger painstakingly creating something so intricate was... peculiar. Yet Eve had a tiny bit of respect for it. “....That’s amazing. Dante is quite talented...” Eve mused quietly.
“Ah, you like shiny things, too?” Eve’s eyes widened with delight, clasping her fingers together. “I love sparkly objects! Have you ever tried making them? I’d say I could teach you but, aah... I’m afraid I make a different kind of sparkly thing.”
harbingerdoll:
That simple statement was a good start at a conversation, and it was such a nice, polite compliment that a tiny part of Dorothy wanted to believe it to be genuine; no ulterior motive involved. The problem was that she just couldn’t. Though Eve was Marie’s sister, that didn’t excuse the fact that she barely knew the other girl. Her mouth quirked into her characteristic dangerous grin, but just as she was about to offer a response, she saw Eve’s arm closing in towards her and felt fingers tug at one of the rabbit ears on her hood.
Acting on instinct, she flinched and recoiled, taking a sudden step back. It hadn’t been direct contact, but she’d still felt the way the fabric of her hood gave and shifted under the touch. It was enough to put her on edge, and her mouth hardened into a thin line, her eyes narrowing from underneath the thickness of her hood. “Hmph! Hands off or I’ll slice them off for you the next time you try something stupid like that! I aim to be the most feared member of the Harbingers, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be cute too!”
Never mind that a chainsaw and katana wouldn’t be enough to take down the physical embodiment of Mother Qualia. She wasn’t going to point that out if Eve didn’t, though.
Whoops, definitely overstepped her boundaries there. Eve’s hands fell behind her, staring up at Dorothy as she took an extra step backwards. She knew the Harbinger would definitely slice her hands off-- or at least try to. Eve believed the threat but knew a mere child wouldn’t be able to harm her. Still, she wasn’t going to rain on Dorothy’s parade. Instead she smiled, shoulders rising as she giggled. Backtalk against her was rare, Eve enjoyed it. “Yes, I understand. I feel the same way. I don’t see any reason why a fearsome Harbinger can’t be cute as well.”
“Just as there is no reason why the Mother Qualia shouldn’t be allowed to wear bows and ruffles. .... Where did you get your hood?” Best steer the conversation away from her identity. Eve found it made others uncomfortable and while she was normally all for misery and making people feel bad, that wasn’t the goal this time. “It’s very different from the attire I see the other knights wearing. But the Harbingers as a whole are very different from the knights so I have no room to compare the two. Mild curiosity as to where you attained it, that’s all.”
@harbingerdoll
“I like your hood.”
That was a good start, yes? Eve had been told that compliments and finding a common interest was a good way to start a conversation. She tested it out on Klaus before but their dessert talks didn’t get too far... She always ended up being shooed away, without fail. Dorothy seemed like a decent candidate with what Eve new on the Harbinger. One of the younger humans, liked cute things, the color pink, Hilda, and the best one in her opinion- killing things!
Eve reached up and gently tugged upon one of the pink rabbit ears, withdrawing her hand soon after in case she overstepped Dorothy’s boundaries (She learned from Klaus not to do that, it would make the conversation end a lot quicker). “It’s fashioned after a rabbit, yes? Small, timid and fluffy creatures of prey. Yet you are one of the more feared members of the Harbingers. It gives you a bit of a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ feeling I believe is the expression. I like it.”

Klaus is just going to very cautiously drop off a plate of one of the best knockoff Moon of Amatsu he picked up earlier, setting it down on the table Eve sat at. He made no eye contact nor bothered to exchange any words with her while performing his delivery. A quickly murmured "Happy Mother's day," was all that would be heard from him before he turned on his heel and took his leave.
Eve hadn’t been doing much. She spent some time with Marie and Rena in the orb shop earlier and left when it had started to get dark out. Marie invited her to spend the night with Rena as well, but Eve declined. Eve knew how the others were a bit apprehensive of her moving around freely (even if they said they weren’t, she knew there was some lingering doubt). If she wanted to gain their trust completely she would rather stick where they could see her. Besides, she couldn’t bug Alto if she stayed with her sister.
She decided to take a brief detour to the mess hall for a snack. Settling on a purple cupcake Lisette baked earlier Eve sat one of the tables, swinging her legs as she peeled back the wrapper. Someone was approaching her but she didn’t bother to look up. She didn’t have to. Her lips tugged into a small smile, resisting the urge for it to grow any bigger. Eve knew her old dolly well enough by now. What did manage to surprise her was the gift Klaus bestowed to her. Eve stared down at the plate, quirking her head and setting the half unwrapped cupcake to the side.
This was... a Moon of Amatsu? No, those were a rarity. It had to be someone’s attempt at recreating the desert. The pastry isn’t what initially stunned her, it was Klaus giving one to her. Eve was faintly aware of how much the sweet meant to her old plaything. For him to give her one, and on Mother’s Day no less...
...He must want something. Had to be a bribe. Klaus refused to associate with her normally, so this was definitely out of the ordinary.
Whatever it may be, Eve was feeling rather smug that Klaus actually took the time to think of and gift her a (imitation) desert he treasured. The former devilish grin turned as sweet as the pastry, watching Klaus skulk away. Eve folded her hands under her chin, legs continuing to swing as he got further away.
“...I’ll bite, Klaus,” Eve mumbled to herself with a light giggle, picking up the pastry between small fingers and turning it over. “What is it that you want from me...?”
“This is a touching reunion between Man and God.”
WHO WANTS MORE BAD ELCREST?? well obviously i do if i keep on drawing it jfc im thristy
yknow when i was sketching this I meant to draw klaus but somehow xeno happened instead. Ah well, same dude, different face.
I sketched an Angel Elcrest and decided to color it after my friend said it would be mildly terrifying if I added a dark background.
side note, most of this was inspired by one of his voiceactor’s songs. it’s edgy as fuck and he says qualia 3 times so it was fitting. listen to elcrest/alto sing about darkness, rotting bodies, overlords, and other fun stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
cantiosolari:
Xeno exhaled very slowly. She seemed to be genuinely telling the truth. It was a twisted and awful truth, but it didn’t make it any less that. And the fact that Eve was willing to make herself vulnerable this way, especially now, especially to him…
“I’m not as good a person as Alto,” he finally said. “It’s going to take me a long time before I can forgive you for what you did to me. To Elcrest. To this entire world. But…”
He lifted one hand and studied his own palm for a very long moment. Then he held it out towards Eve without looking at her. “We both need to begin again, you and I. Your jealousy, my fear…if either of us let our negativity swallow us again, everything Alto did for us will be for nothing. So let us begin here. What would you like to see?”
“I do not deserve nor expect your forgiveness, Xeno,” Eve said flatly, keeping her gaze to the ground. She knew damn well she wasn’t going to be forgiven immediately, not after all she tragedy she caused. She warped and broke this man down to her liking, why would he ever think to give her a-
-...a chance? He was extending his hand to her, saying they need to begin anew. Eve turned to stare at his hand with wide eyes, blinking once in shock before looking up at him. Was it a trick? Was Xeno going to take it all back as soon as she got her hopes up? A smile passed over her features, taking his hand as her legs began to swing again.
“You know Lambert better than I. From what I understand, you enjoyed sampling confectioneries, yes? I heard about ‘Mr.X’ from Marie and Rena. Might we be able to visit one of the sweets establishments?”
cantiosolari:
Xeno pinched the bridge of his nose for a long second. Looked around him, and found a low bench to sit down on. He rested his elbows on his knees and, once he’d settled down at Eve’s eye level, looked at her again with as even an expression as he could muster.
“You’ve been alone for a very long time,” he said. “I understand that. But so have I. And you and I have…never been very good company in the past.” He paused for a very long moment, considering his words very carefully. “Why do you still want to spend time with me? I’d like you to explain how you feel.”
Eve hurried right behind Xeno to the bench, hopping up on it beside him and swinging her legs idly. The two of them were alone for a long time, but they were all the other had. Eve hadn’t been the best towards Xeno, anything but, but it was a twisted, controlling affection. Most of the negative feelings she harbored for him were gone, replaced with guilt and a longing instead. Aah, how was she supposed to put her jumbled emotions into words...?
“...I believe I would like to make it up to you,” Eve began, her legs coming to a halt and settling in place. “For all the terrible things I did the past millennia. That, and... you were the only one I had in that time span. I know I need to let go, but it’s harder than I thought it would be.” She hesitated, turning to look at him. “I wasn’t as lonely with you there. I think you.. helped me in a way.”
cantiosolari:
…There was no delicate way to address this subject.
Eve really was trying. Most days she succeeded. And then sometimes the darkness came back behind her eyes again, and he certainly wasn’t bad with words, but Xeno was no Conductor.
“I’m sure you can be,” he said after a very long moment of consideration. “If you’ve been spending time with Rena and Marie, I’m sure they’ve taught you plenty about how to have fun. You have been, haven’t you?”
“...I have,” Eve said after some hesitation, idly smoothing the front of her dress. Eve wanted desperately to be included in her sister’s activities. She spent more time in Lambert and got used to human life. Eve also wanted to try and patch up their relationship. She felt awful about everything she had done to Marie, nothing she did ever felt like enough to fix it.
“But something tells me what little girls do for fun is different than what adult humans find fun. Adult humans like to... ‘hit up the tavern’ correct? That’s what I’ve heard from Rusty.”
“I understand if you do not wish to associate with me any further, Xeno. ... But I cannot say the same for myself.”
look elc everything the light touches will die.png
AU WHERE EVE SUCCESSFULLY CORRUPTS ELCREST THO
@cantiosolari
Perhaps it was wrong of Eve to feel jealous about Xeno spending time with people other than her. Or at least she assumed it was jealously, the feeling was a bit murky. Still, Eve couldn’t deny how bothersome it was for Xeno to be away from her. That was her dolly. Her witch. She didn’t want Alto to take another one away.
“Xeno, do you favor the knights over myself? Do they make for better company? I can be just as fun as them.”
astrayeus:
“I’d feel pretty insulted yes.” Did she… give someone a dessert recently and it didn’t go well? Gemiya feels a tinge of anger well up inside her, being defensive over the other, seeing as Eve was rather polite and sweet most of the time. Who in the world would insult such a cutie after all?
“Any idea why they’d insult the dessert?”
“Oh, yes, definitely,” Eve answered without missing a beat. “He and I are not on good terms. But I’m making an attempt to turn enemies into something slightly less malicious. Baby steps are important after all.”
A part of her knew that this was all a meaningless effort. Klaus would never forgive her. But that didn’t mean she would stop bugging him. Where’s the fun in that? “I know sweets is his weakness so I thought for sure that cake might help, but it seems I was proven wrong. Do I need to bake more? Would cupcakes work better? Or perhaps I’m going about this the wrong way and he needs a different dessert?”
@astrayeus
“It’s awfully rude to prepare a whole dessert for someone and they insult you for it, is it not?” She’s totally not still bitter about giving Klaus an apology cake. Nope. Whatever gave you that idea. “After all that effort all I receive are ill-mannered remarks. Some humans have no tact.”
