one particular presentation I really enjoyed was the advertising presentation based on none traditional  ways of advertising studied specifically the movie deadpool. I really enjoy this non traditional way of advertising as it really helps me feel connected to the character and make me more excited to see the film. 

Another project I really liked was the story book depicting the story of a women on death row who was tried as an adult at the age of 14. She was illiterate and had a very low iq and should not have been deemed fit to stand trial. Despite all of this she was tried as an adult even though she was only 14. The fact that this story was told in the form of a storybook gives it a different perspective on her story and the criminal justice system as a whole. 

Another project that I really liked was the one that studying class and the relation to if they were acquitted or not. There was of course more people acquitted if they were of higher social class. I found this to be really interesting and shined a light on an issue that is not really talked about.

one thing that was definitely exaggerated in the series OJ vs the people on fox vs the actual series was the role of the Kardashian family. There is no doubt that the Simpson and Kardashian family were close, there was even an episode of keeping up with the Kardashian where Khloe had a paternity test done because she accused her mother of her being OJ’s child instead of Rob’s. This was not very serious and more to get views on the reality show. Despite how fox’s show portrayed it, Kardashian did not play as big of a role as he seemed to. He seemed to serve as more of an emotional support than an actual lawyer as he had never practiced criminal law before.

The Coen Brothers Reveal 'Fargo' Is Based On A True Story After All

Here's what actually happened.

This article includes parts of an interview with the Coen brothers (the directors of Fargo) about the opening text describing the film as a true story. In this interview they explain that it is not exactly based on a true story, rather it is loosely based on two separate, but still real, crimes. 

One particularly interesting quote from Ethan Coen: 

“We wanted to make a movie just in the genre of a true story movie. You don’t have to have a true story to make a true story movie” (Coen, The Huffington Post).

I literally believed that this was a true film all the way up until we learned in class that it was for comedic measure. This made me look at the film in a while different light.

Party Girl, Casey Anthony (also a great, little U2 deep-cut track)

During the Casey Anthony trial,  the press mainly focused on spreading the ideals that she was an irresponsible mother and a selfish type of person. The first two pictures are examples of the images that the news mainly spread across the country, molding in the minds of citizens that Casey was, in fact, a party girl. The other two images, showing Casey with her daughter, seem extremely loving and show the other side of Casey’s possible character. However, these were not spread as much as the party-type images. Because of this, most people remember the negative characterization of Casey rather than the loving one.

I think I found these pictures interesting as she is about my age and most people my age are young and immature and like to have some fun sometimes. There was definitely other things the prosecutors could have focused on other than her level of motherhood

I found this video very interesting as it discusses mothers in relations to murder trials. The media and the courtroom tend of focus on how good of a mom they were rather than if they killed their child or not. In the Casey Anthony case Caylee Anthony’s body was so far decayed yet they were easily able to declare it a homicide.

The media went crazy over the Scott Peterson case. People across the country rejoiced when the verdict came out as guilty.

The opening of “Orange is The New Black” made me think of Lombroso’s marks of the “born criminal” that we discussed in previous classes. Could the focused snapshots of each face highlight the characteristics of the “born criminal” that Lombroso established?

I really enjoy the opening of Orange is The New Black as it is the faces of actual prisoners. It show’s the diversity and range of emotions which I found really interesting.

Ear Hustle

This podcast was interesting as it showed the different types of parenting and how they play a role within a prison system. Both of the fathers loved their kids and were able to do so from prison. The story that hit me emotionally was the one about the middle class father who ended up in prision for a DUI. He seemed like your typical father and I can’t imagine what it would be like to watch your children grow up from prison. The other speaker was able to bond with his son when they ended up in jail together. I think this speaks volumes about class and the prison system as one of the father’s kids lived a normal life despite not having a father while the other kid ended up in prision as well. I alos enjoyed how they were able to see each other in one another as they had been apart for the son’s whole life.

Challenge Post 8: Touches of the Real

Despite dealing with many real, pressing social issues, Deborah Granik’s 2010 film, Winter’s Bone, is fictional, based on the 2006 novel by Daniel Woodrell.  However, like many of Granik’s films, it has a kind of quiet realism that might seem more reminiscent of documentary films.  Some of this might be due to Granik’s ongoing interest, as both a student and a filmmaker, in documentary film history and neo-realism.  While I’ll say more about that stuff during class when we discuss the film, I want you to simply think about where these moments of heightened realism emerge.  For me, the black-and-white dream sequence that appears ¾ of the way through the film is just one such example.  While this mini-montage might seem insignificant, to my mind, it works to reinforce Ree’s deep connection to the land, to this particular part of the Ozarks that she’s called home for the entire seventeen years of her life.  While she knows that selling the land could provide one solution to her family’s problems, that would be, it seems, like giving up her history and even a bit of her soul.  She must give up a lot, but her connection to the land is not a sacrifice she’s willing, or even able, to make.

My challenge to you is to find another film that similarly blurs the lines between the real and the fictional.  What techniques does the director use to create such blurring?  What is the “purpose” of this merging of styles?   Include some still images or a video clip if you’re able.

The director uses Alice, a vampire with the ability to see the future, as a plot device. Several things happen in the ending fight scene such as the father figure dying, several other fan favorite characters dying and the main evil character dying. But the viewer then finds out it is just a vision and has not happened. This was mainly used as a way to intrigue the viewers and make them think about what could have been while keeping them entertained

Young girls really are pressured now more than ever to be seen as beautiful and sexy and perfect like IG models and whatever the fuck…..like that’s why you see “me at 14 vs 14 year old girls today” posts……….we didn’t have this constant stream of content like they do…..content telling us to be perfect and to have perfect clothes and sharp eyeliner wings that look photoshopped and shit like that….I mean it’s always been there but not like this…and while I think girls should be able to dress however they want and do whatever they want…..you have to take into consideration the fact that this all stems from a toxic culture where women have to be perfect and beautiful…now at younger and younger ages….and it’s really gross…and the media continues to sexualize and like…make young girls seem older and more appealing than they actually are idk the whole thing makes me so uncomfortable and it’s only going to get worse :/

And the wildest thing is, people will still try and justify it with the “there’s always been girls that dress older than they are!” argument. Which is true. But it was never the norm. Pre social media, most young girls were allowed be young girls. Here’s Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Lindsay Lohan at 14/15 in 2001-2007. They were arguably the biggest young stars of the time but this is how they presented

They aren’t being styled to look leagues older than they are. They’re allowed to just be their own age and look their own age. Now, here’s Millie Bobbie Brown at 13 in 2018, Veronika Bonell at 15/16 in 2017, Skai Jackson at 13 in 2015, and Caitlin Carmichael at 13 in 2017.

There is a deep problem in our society that this is what people are styling children to look like. They don’t look like children, they look like young adults. They could wear these exact same looks in 10 years and they wouldn’t be questioned because they’re dressed and made up to present as adults. This is what is presented as normal for young girls, this is the image they’re told is the “right” one, the one they should aspire to.

There’s nothing wrong with girls - or boys - wanting to be pretty. But there is a problem with young girls being constantly told that pretty for them means looking over 21 at 13.

I have a sister who is 14 years old and I have seen how the social media revolution has effected her. In what seemed to be overnight, she went from wanting to play outside all the time and being a kid to obsessing over beauty bloggers on instagram. She has so much makeup I can hardly keep track while as when I was 14 I barely wore any. I think pressuring girls at such a young age can be damaging as being a kid is such a fun time that young children should cherish.

One of my favorite relationships on television right now is Jake and Amy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Their relationship is healthy, and the two partners are supportive of each other and their career goals at the precinct. In this gifset, all of the members of their squad are trying to take credit for giving Jake the idea to propose, but he tells them it was his idea. Jake decided he was going to propose to Amy when they were just hanging out, and she found a typo in the crossword puzzle. It wasn’t some big moment, but rather a simple one. In the last gif, Jake looks at Amy with so much love, like he can see them spending the rest of their lives together. There is no big change or moment where Jake sees her in a new light. Amy is simply being herself, completely engrossed in a crossword puzzle.

I think this show is very interesting as there is alot of toxic relationships that are portrayed in the media. This is one of the rare, healthy relationships that are portrayed on television. This show is one of my favorites as Andy Samberg was one of my favorite characters on SNL.

Find an online dating site or download a mobile dating app that you have not used before. You do not need to generate a profile (unless you want to), but I do want you spend some time looking around. What kinds of profile questions are asked? How is the site/app advertised or marketed? What does its interface tell you about how the app functions? Who is the app/site designed for? Are there testimonials or reviews that discuss the site/apps’ “success stories”? Do the creators share anywhere on the site or app why they decided to create the app/site?

I checked out one of the most popular dating apps within my age rage which is tinder. It only asks for your name, age, gender and sexual preference. I found it uneasy that they had limited options for gender and sexual preference as they are not black and white but rather a spectrum.Going on these dating sites is nerve wracking as you have to put yourself out there and talk to strangers and it would only make it worse if you have to explain to everyone your non binary sexual preference or gender.  

One of the things about this dating app is it has a reputation of being for mainly hookup culture. And while I have known people that have had successful relationships which started on tinder, in my personal experience the reputation has held true. Alot of the messages I got were pretty sexually explicit and striaghtforward. When people are hiding behind a screen I think it is alot easier to say things like that as you do not have to look them in the eye and say such things.

Challenge Post #15

In relation to our viewing of both The Kids are Alright and Transparent, what other shows or films can you think of that consider the intersection of family/domestic life and love/sex/relationships–either how domestic life might be disrupted by these latter forces or, perhaps, reinforced or supported by them?

Choose one example and discuss.

One example that I thought of when I read this challenge post was the show, The Fosters. The Fosters is about the lives of lesbian couple who raise five children, one biological and four adopted. I have not seen the last couple seasons, but from the first two seasons I did see, the show had an equal balance of family issues and issues surrounding love and sex. One extreme example that I remember is that the biological son, Brandon, falls in love with one of the foster children, Callie. Their love created a huge problem for the family because it threatened Callie’s and her brother’s ability to get adopted. This disrupted the family’s life in the show because it lead to tension between the children and the moms resulting in Brandon and Callie having to choose their romantic relationship or family. Overall in the show, conflicts such as this one would always end up bringing the family closer. For instance, adopted twins in the show, Jesus and Mariana, try to find their birth mother. Similar to The Kids are Alright, the birth mother created a strain on the couple’s relationship as well as the entire family, but in the end, it helped to reinforce the strength of the family.

One show that I have think of is modern family, the show focuses on three families all related to each other, the father is related to a younger woman, and has two kids claire and mitchell. Mitchell is gay and the show talks alot about difficulties with raising his child. I remember one episode where Mitchell and his husband Cam go to a Vietnamese restaurant to try to bring lily back to her roots but she refuses to eat the food and insists on eating a hamburger. Another issue that is addressed in the show is the fact that Jay is married to a younger woman. His wife Gloria talks about her worries of being accepted into the family and if she can really be seen as a matronly figure if she is the same age as his kids. It is one of my favorite shows and I would highly recommend watching

It’s an understated moment but I definitely think this gets to the heart of everything the other characters think Lars is struggling with, which is essentially fear of death and abandonment: fear for Karin and her pregnancy, which is related to his mother’s death giving birth to him, feeling abandoned by his brother, etc.

I think Lars was aware that Bianca was not real however, he just needed a way to escape what he was going through in the real world and needed an outlet to avoid it
