Honey Moon Marmalade - by Clover
The Ema Toyama autograph story
I read Ema’s manga since elementary school and I grew a huge fan of ‘Watashi ni xx shinasai’ in the past years. I also started writing my own cell phone novel ‘Honey Moon Marmelade' because of it. And this year she attended the LBM (Leipziger Buchmesse) in Leipzig, where I live. I didn’t know she was there on friday so I walked around and looked at stands and things when I saw a giant wall with ‘Welcome Ema Toyama’ on it. Next to it there was a schedule when she was signing shikis and manga and gave talks. Of course I did have a lot of spare time on friday, but she was only signing at the book shop on the main station and I wouldn’t get there in time for the limited autographs. So I got up really early the other day to get one. But I was signed in for the European Cosplay Gathering and didn’t know when my teammates would arrive. I waited till 10am at the main entrace (the autographs were limited to 80 that day and they would hand out the numbers at 10.15am). I finally got a call that said they would need more time cause they got stuck in the traffic. I bought a ticket (even though we would later get a free one) and ran upstairs, crashing into several people (I am sorry). When I reached the stand at three past ten there were no numbers left. Another fan got there before me and she was furiously shouting at one of the stands employees, cause they handed them out so quick. He just said something like ‘we can’t send the people away with nothing who come here.’ Which was an enourmous lie, cause you can’t hand out books that didn’t release either. I mean.. just what?! I had a really hardcore busy day with waiting and the ECG and didn’t make it to the panel talk she gave. So I got up damn early on Sunday (which was kinda hard, cause I had a visitor over night and she arrived here at like 3am. plus I had to sew my sunday cosplay, too.). We hung out a long time at the fair, until I made it up to hall 2. It was said that they would hand out 80 numbers again, at like 1pm. So I ran upstairs at 11.30am to get a place in the queu. I really got one and I was glad some of the others left cause the waiting was really hardcore. It was set up in the middle of the hall and like every damn visitor crashed into us. I got number 76/80 and I was relieved as hell when I left the queu one to get into the next one. I still didn’t know if she was signing shikis or the manga, so I bought 8 and 9 of watashi ni xx shinasai, while waiting. I also got my cell phone novel on a CD and made a cute pink envelope with the title on japanese to give it to her during the signing session. I also wanted to take a picture of her, but it was permitted. And I didn’t even want to try, since there were six security guards in total who watched over her. The queue got shorter and shorter and when I finally got my shikishi and made my way up to her on the stage, my legs were trembling and my heart was beating so fast I could collapse in the next second. And then I handed over the paper and greeted her with ‘nice to meet you, Toyama-sensei’ on japanese (at least the last few words I could actually make without bursting into tears). She was smiling and her assistant helped me to translate the words I messed up. ‘Your ‘watashi ni xx shinasai!’ inspired me to write this novel, please have a free copy as a present.’ And I can truly say she has the cutest smile of everyone I ever met. Ema is like the angel of all the manga-ka and I am more than just happy that I had the chance to meet her. Her assistant also introduced me and my artist name to her and she thanked me for it. Then I got the post card and the button of ‘watashi ni xx shinasai!’ and left the stage for the next person. My legs were still shaking when I went off and I had to sit down behind the stage. It was worth waiting for at least 4.15 hours. Now everyday I look at it, whether I am in doubt of reaching my dreams or in a blockade of writing, I remember how wonderful she and her manga are and it makes me smile. (And right now I am crying all over, cause I didn’t even realize a whole that I met Ema Toyama face to face!!!)
Thank you for reading so far <3
