ok this is so delayed so sorry for everyone who has been Sitting in the Inbox for Ages..... i do have thoughts though & this is a good excuse to plug the only other social media i actually like letterboxd :)
u can see what i'm watchin & what i thnk about it here! i've been off of my movie grind but i'm back on it again recently. if yall have movie recommendations please send!!

Hello I am listening to your demo lovers + gender episode VERY late and enjoying your podcast immensely!! The whole idea of the demo lovers both representing one persons experience with gender is something that I never considered before and I think it’s sooo cool. I don’t know if someone’s already said this but the mirror in honey this mirror is I believe a reference to cocaine? Pretty sure that the whole song is discussing drug use tearing someone apart from their loved ones, hence the “you won’t touch my brother” and “beauty that I’m faking,” etc. Either way I love hearing new interpretations of the demo lovers story and I’m obsessed with your podcast :D
love this take & i would definitely believe this. Lots of their lyrics reference addiction/mental illness and fame as it connects to those 2 themes specifically. we've been planning an ep around these themes for a while maybe it is approaching time!
not much to say just wanted to let you know I love the pod!! I was just relistening to past eps when you posted the new one. thanks for making it! :)
this is so nice thank you for listening cerealsnail :)
since yall mentioned doing an unholyverse episode, I wanted to brag about the dumbest thing I’ve ever done: this past weekend I rallied all my friends and all the devices in my house on private browsing and put as many kudos on I have been all things unholy as I could with the express purpose of making it the top fic in the mcr fandom on ao3. not because I wanted it to be the top fic (I did but), because I wanted the anatomy of a fall to be second
Great work valiant soldier!!
Hello! Just wanted to say I really adore your podcast. Everytime I (re)listen to an episode I learn something new about gender, or media, or how art is portrayed, (or mcr of course) or connect a dot about how finding mcr in my youth affected my own life and perception on so many things. You guys also just have really nice vibes so even when there are complicated or heavy topics it isn't a struggle to listen to. Thank you so much for making this podcast.
Thank you! Part of what makes MCR so phenomenal is that it lights up so much for so many different people. There's simply so much to connect to and uncover and it changes all the time especially as they make NEW LORE for us! Truly the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for listening!!
Hello! I know this isn’t directly mcr related but would you ever consider a sort of bonus Thursday episode? I would love to hear your thoughts on specifically Geoff rickly’s use of cars as a symbol for the never ending cycle of capitalism and industrialism, as well as the expected life path of work, reproduction and death and how that relates to queer time? Or if you think that the cars mean something completely different? Sorry if this doesn’t make sense but either way it would be awesome if you wanted to talk about Thursday more because they have a lot to dissect
love this idea & we would definitely consider it!!! adding to the list :)
I don't know if you know Mirabai from TikTok, she has been talking a lot about trans femininity in a very controversial yet interesting way mostly around Gerard's relation to femininity. What are your thoughts on that whole ordeal? Yes, of course gendering Gee as a trans woman is bollocks but I still think her views around their relations to femininity are at least conversation breakers. I've come here to see the points of view of more informed and articulated folk rather than on TikTok with whom it's almost impossible to discuss anything even slightly controversial or critical.
I am not on TikTok for the same reasons! I could feel it absolutely melting my ability to think critically. But I think I know who this person is (maybe?) and I respect anyone's right to have edgy takes about Gerard's gender.
@mychemicalraymance made a great post earlier today about Gerard's (lack of) pronouns and a lack of a public profile that's got me thinking about how Gerard's gender doesn't reduce to identity. As they said in this famous tweet, "using labels only gives others the leverage needed to categorize you or use you as a political tool."
Personally, I think what Gerard is doing with gender is much more complex than what we would usually think of when we talk about transfemininity. Identity is helpful to a point, but it also puts pressure on you to be legible and accountable in ways that may not make sense for you. It stops being useful when it starts constraining.
Gerard is giving us a multiplicity of gender expression that doesn't fit neatly into what we expect from any of the terms we have at our disposal. I'm sure I'm not the only ostensibly nonbinary person that feels like "nonbinary" doesn't even begin to cover it, or that "nonbinary" has come to describe a certain way of doing gender that maybe only occasionally applies to me. It's Gerard's escape from the confines of defined, limited identity that is doing something here. It's critiquing the limits of those labels, and it is entirely intentional.
(and while we're here, a critique of *identity politics* writ large that I tie back to Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto: Identity is not a helpful tool for building a political movement. Haraway is critiquing the feminist movement on the ground that it is organized around the concept of Woman, which is nebulous, and is most easily defined as "not man." When you build a movement around identity, there is always an out group. You're organizing around Is and Is Not. And that kind of binary thinking can't help build coalitions or draw in unlikely allies to effectively disrupt the way these categories trap us.)

edit from maren: we're also going to chat a bit about this question & controversies etc around gender wars & she/her-ing gerard in our next ep that we are recording on thursday so stick around if u want to hear some more in-depth analysis of this :)

Thanks for this ask, it feels good to be back in the trenches of the Gender Wars with you all.
Hello all. I thought for a long time about writing in about the new tour, or about Danger Days, or about the storytelling or lack thereof in MCR material, but honestly, at the end of the day, I just wanted to say thank you. During one of your episodes, you used and described the term "collective effervescence". It gave language to experiences I had growing up in charismatic Christian spaces. It allowed me to perhaps understand my parents' inability to fully divest themselves of the influence of the cult they joined in the 80s. It allowed me to describe what has both felt amazing and disturbing in the religious spaces I grew up in. I didn't think when I started to listen to a My Chemical Romance podcast that I would be communicating with people about 80s cults and describing how hard we bought into watching people sob and speak in Tongues at Bible camp, but here we are. So, thanks???
wow you guys are so awesome. surreal to hear things like this. we never would've believed our little niche fandom community could connect us all & help us all in some way. y'all give us language too!!! beautiful stuff!!!!!!!
idk if this is what MCR intended, but I just learned that Black Mariah is an old slang term for a vehicle that took people to their holding centers. Might play into the following line in Hang Em High, "that girl's not right in the brain." So maybe they weren't saying call her Black Mariah as in "address her by this name" but rather call her Black mariah as in "call for a ride to come take her away" idk, I don't know how deep all this goes lol
Oh I love this! Maybe both at once? Call the ride to take her away/ she *is* the ride to take me away and we're going somewhere much more exciting than an institution? Great interpretation anon!
Hey!! 1. Hope y'all r well, 2. In a queer theory course right now, and goddamn having listened to y'alls Entire podcast discography has been really useful. Genuinely part of why I took the course. Y'all really got me into queer theory, and now I'm doing Deep studies of it and it's so cool
THIS IS SO COOL! I love hearing that the pod is getting people into theory. Legitimately so many academic tools are so useful for understanding our worlds and our selves but they are so damn inaccessible. When I was in grad school I kept thinking about how it would be so easy to write about this stuff in a way that people could read and understand and apply, but man the academy really does not reward anyone's efforts to make it more accessible. And they sure as hell don't want to reform their own systems to do so.
Queer theorists are by no means the worst offenders here. I would love to find a way to do a modernism/postmodernism episode (Jameson on nostalgia, Baudrillard on copies of copies of copies, Deleuze and Guattari and a really careful and nuanced convo about what they call "schizophrenia" and how we could use it to approach Gerard's incomplete storytelling and characters) and really break open pandora's box of blackboxed academic tools.
Glad we could help build a bridge for ya!
i was barricade for wwwy on the second day. i was in fact dehydrated all day and yet needed to pee for the last 8 or so hours of the day. it was entirely worth it imo, i felt my soul leave my body.
but the real treat was the day after. i was at the airport stupid early sitting at a random gate and i saw gabe saporta looking the most tired i had ever seen him throw back 2 starbucks sausage egg and cheese sandwiches and then look in his to go bag forlornly like maybe he had ordered a third and forgot about it. despicable 6-foot-4 behavior. i didn't approach him because i wouldn't want to be approached if i was feeling like that but i did just sit there until his plane boarded feeling sorry for the guy.
Being barricade at a festival takes a special form of religious dedication and also self-flagellation of which neither Maren nor I are capable, so hats off to you!
What an incredible encounter with Gabe Saporta in the wild. If I had been there (and not constrained by the horrors of Being In An Airport) I would have bought him another round and then disappeared into the crowd as quickly as possible. That man earned as many sausage egg and cheese sandwiches as he wanted that weekend.
Thanks for listening :)
HI FRIENDS this is EJ!! First off thank you all so much for your enthusiasm over the new ep, it feels SO GOOD to be back!
Second, I'm going to be going back through our messages this afternoon & tomorrow and responding to some stuff we haven't answered in (time period redacted because it's honestly embarrassing). We tried to save some good questions for mailbox episodes, but that just resulted in us putting them off for a long time. Now is a GREAT TIME to send in an ask or a thought or a feeling or a vibe if you've got something to say.
Also review the podcast and rate it on Spotify or Apple Podcasts so more people can find us! Thanks and lots of love!
WE ARE BACK FROM THE DEAD
Rising like the bloody corpse of your favorite vocalist after they've been stabbed and stabbed and stabbed by a clown, Honey This Podcast makes its triumphant return!!!! As we discuss at the outset, this episode is a bit cobbled together with some reflections on the tour from mid-August as well as some thoughts on fascism from before the tour even launched (terrible audio included!) but we've got some insights and wild predictions that did not come true that we think you'll quite enjoy.
Topics include: The Boston Incident, super lame cancer like from the My Chemical Romance song, Ticketmaster in our fucking crosshairs, CLOWNS, My Chemical Cryptography, us not knowing Charlie Saxton's name yet (sorry Charlie), tricking 25,000 people into watching performance art, fascism as an alluring aesthetic, Dr.Strangelove and good satire, ballgown wishful thinking, LIZA MINELLI, military drag, new music wishful thinking, how everything is the Cold War, democratizing the barricade experience, and our ardent demands for a limp clown.
love u guys so glad to be back!!!
