“ THE BASTARD OF ROBERT OF THE HOUSE BARATHEON, FIRST OF HIS NAME, KING OF THE ANDALS & THE FIRST MEN. WHY DO YOU THINK THE CITY WATCH WANTED YOU? THERE IS POWER IN A KING’S BLOOD. ”
Independent Gendry Baratheon of Game of Thrones. Private / Selective / Mutually Exclusive. Rowed by Rose.
HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. All his life people had said that to him. That he was the greatest they had ever seen. That no man stood better than him. That with a sword and a lance in his hand - he had no rival, but in the end of it all, they were just words and words held little weight. If all of that was the truth, then he would have beaten the prince that day. He had done it so many times, he had knocked him off his horse and onto his back more times than he could count, so what made that day any different than all the rest? Why did the prince beat him that day, why did he fall and hit the ground, for the moment he hit that dirt - he had doomed them all.
“We are kingsguard - we do as we are commanded.” He glanced at Arthur to remind him of what he was. The comment of not being a dog did not sit well with someone like him. He believed in his word, his vows - they did as they were commanded and they would never question the order - never. “This does not sit well with me - I do not know what the prince intends to do, but promise me that you will at least council him as best as you can -” He didn’t know what they intended to do or were they were going. The fact that he was not asked to accompany them meant that it was something that he would - disapprove of and that alone had him concerned.
He would die for the prince - he only had to ask that of him. There was no other man he loved more than he, no other man that made his heart swim with pride - yet the fact that the prince saw that he could not trust him, broke his heart.
“We swore vows remember? When it comes to the matters of the heart, it is a battle we cannot fight.” He glanced down - he had seen it himself how the prince looked at Lyanna Stark, how he spoke about her - he knew it in his heart what the prince intended to do and he knew what would happen when he did it.
“Trust the prince - he will do what he things is right - he has never done us wrong before.”
Neither of them had found an assured voice, and the Sword of the Morning would try to ignore the nerves that shivered in his arm. Orders to be followed without question, of course. Arthur would never consider to betray his King or his blood, and that silenced loyalty had bought him this post. Seven kingdoms waited with bated breath for the words of the Lord Baratheon or the command from a crown that fell quiet. The knight, now, was left but to wait, to follow his prince, and to remain silent.
“I’ve given my best council to Prince Rhaegar from the day he bestowed his blade upon my shoulder. You have my word - Ser Barristan - that I will continue to do so until my eyes close for the last time.” Solemn words given in earnest, and finally there was a strength in his voice that Arthur himself had recognized. He did not lack faith in himself nor in his prince, and perhaps that was all that was carrying him upon this mission to Harrenhall. His brother was right - Rhaegar had never given reason to lead them astray here.
“It is not the Prince I distrust, however.” A returning glance towards the veteran. “You know the fury of the Baratheons. You saw Robert that day - face as red as an apple picked from the orchard.” His closest ally was of a wild House in the North - thousands of miles away they could conjure up any mischief that would give them reason to act out against the crown and the loyal houses that supported it. Arthur looked forward to the peace their Prince had promised and not to the song of swords that blew with the winds of the Storm.
“I fear, Ser Barristan, that it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. I ride beside Rhaegar without question, but if I follow my Prince’s heart to see these sparks become a wild fire, are we as men not responsible for the lives, then, that will be torn to pieces because of it?” The shaking head trying to throw doubting words away. War was war - perhaps no one in the Seven understood better than the two men standing in the quiet hall.
“I wonder if the Gods test our faith in times like these...if this is a game to them.”

Dorne. It always came back to Dorne somehow. Daenerys didn’t enjoy telling the knight the fate of the Prince’s son. She’d felt badly for Quentyn. The contract he’d brought had been for Viserys and his sister, with no mention at all of Daenerys. Prince Doran had played a subtle hand at that maneuver, a gamble that she would honor the unspoken offer of allegiance, that she would need it. If the boy had only come forward when he’d arrived with the sellswords, before Dany had made the pact with Hizdahr, but he hadn’t. She’d listened to Ser Barristan, trying to bring Westerosi justice to Meereen, in her compassion and kindness she had nearly doomed the people she’d freed.
If the Harpies had chosen not to attack in the pit, if Drogon had not come to her rescue, she would not have almost died in the Great Grass Sea, and she would not have the Dothraki. The warning of the shadowbinder echoed in her thoughts. ‘The glass candles are burning. Soon comes the pale mare, and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun’s son and the mummer’s dragon. Trust none of them. Remember the Undying. Beware the perfumed seneschal.’ The Martell sigil was a sun. Quentyn. The sun’s son. Daenerys gaze shifted to the knight as he spoke, listening carefully, wondering as she would if there was still a loyalty to the Prince of Dorne. “A fool, perhaps, but the kindness is to his father, who deserves to lay him to rest.”
Ah, there it is. Daenerys recognizes the tone. A longing for home. It’s a tone she had once, what feels as if long ago. Home. She didn’t know what that was anymore, if she ever had. “Only that it was his father’s hope that I would honor the pact made for Viserys, that… that he couldn’t return empty handed, and of course, that Dorne would stand with me when I returned to Westeros as his lady wife,” Daenerys answered slowly, trying to think on exactly what Quentyn had said. She’d been pulled in so many directions then and all she kept thinking of was the boy’s almost desperate pleading, a quiet boy of small stature, nothing at all like the men Daenerys favored. “Will you go home to Dorne? After I have taken the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Arthur? Is that your desire?”
The knight sat in quiet reflection - trying to remember Doran’s face stoic and silent looking over the eastern sea that the arm of Dorne dipped into. The Daynes has remained faithful to their liege since the stars first shone in the sky, but it still made the knight’s stomach turn to hear of the insolence of boyish audacity. Had he arrived sooner - heeded Barristan’s word to take to the city, perhaps he would have listened to reason. It mattered not, now, and though his face wrought with sorrow for the boy there was no use in trying to find forgiveness for the dead.
“My desire?” A questioned posed without a clear answer. A foreign concept - such heavy desires were never paid much attention to the knight. Arthur’s purpose as far as he could remember was to serve his Lord, and in his exile he found a loneliness he wished not to return to in the dead of dark Eastern night. What was it, truly, that he desired? Reflection would melt into a curious violet gaze that found his queen. What did a woman born of exile know of home? What did she know of desire?
“I’ve yet to return to Starfall since Ashara died,” Not an easy confession, but one she perhaps needed to hear. He’s not risk his return and endanger his entire family for the sake of a visit, and his heart bled every rising dawn because of it. Despite the struggle, he would continue: “I would like to pay my respects to her. When she walked the castle, spinning and smiling, she would outshine the stars. She deserves that much,” A solemn and sobering vow quickly followed with a shaking head.
“...but my fate is not to wither and die in a castle on the end of the world, your grace.” A refound strength in his voice with a body turning towards her. “At least, I believe it not. Wherever you go, whatever seat you place yourself upon, there will be those that wish to see your blood run from it. After I visit where Ashara rests, it is my desire to be at your side until my days are at an end. When the sun rises over your kingdom, Daenerys, I wish to see the first light of the dawn wash away the darkness.”

Her body would tremble in his touch, and he would respond with slower, meaningful drags of the cloth against her bare skin. Steam lifting from bath’s surface gaze his vision a haze, and Arthur nearly had confided himself to be dreaming. Her skin was warm to the touch, and the knight found it difficult to lift his grasp from her - as if he’d ever give a notion to the thought. Violet eyes watched her, taking healthy looks to the curves of her body as her digit traced along his chest.
He’d given thought to her inquiry for but a moment. How sweetly her voice fell from her lips. He could listen to those soft sounds for the rest of the evening, and the further she sat upon him, the more disciplined the knight was forced to be. He would wait and watch - though not without his own hands to explore her.
“It’s been too long since a lady has asked such of me,” That much was not a lie, and Arthur played with the idea of what to request from the auburn haired beauty that sat in his grasp. For himself. Hunger in his violets rising to meet her gaze, so that he could look in her eyes as he gave his request. “Rub your clit for me,”
Palms would snake their way along curving figure, caressing her full breasts with firm squeezes to further encourage the noises that she would give him. Surely she knew there was only so much she could do to tease the knight before he would give in to his sin. Perhaps that’s what she was looking for.
