They're reversing the change!
Folks, for those of you who use Tumblr primarily from phones, stop everything you are doing right now and figure out how to turn off auto updates in the Tumblr app as soon as possible.
The web is fucked up, it's borderline unusable, but the apps haven't been updated yet.
iphone
android
[Image IDs: Tumblr replies. cuddlesDotGif: On iPhones that's Settings > Apps > App Store and toggle off auto updates. You can also search "app updates" to go straight there.
heliager: android go to the tumblr app in the play store and in the top right corner there's a menu where you can untoggle "enable auto update" /End IDs]
Hello lovelies if you can see this. I did not update the app. Posts on my dash look normal, but my notifications seem to be according to the update.
By which I mean I get a notif from everyone who is reblogging this description from someone who is not me.
So not updating only saves you so much. Because, to reiterate, I did not update the app but my notifications are still messed up. Posts on the dashboard seem to be normal
This is on an iPhone. The last time I updated the app was when we got polls
Can confirm that sometimes an update can seep in even if you don't update the app. I remember it happening with a UI update I hated and it made me so mad.
If a UI update can affect apps without having to update to the newest version, this reblog update can and will make its way to mobile whether you like it or not
Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes
The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.Β
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, youβll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post β we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out β stay tuned!
Itβs very clear that you all have strong feelings about Tumblr and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for how Tumblr works is one of the things that makes this place special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, weβll keep reading your replies and reblogs, so please keep sharing your questions, concerns, and ideas.
Your creativity has always been the heart of Tumblr, whether youβre the original poster or adding something brilliant in the reblogs,Β and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If youβd like to talk directly beyond the comments, leave a reply and weβll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to make Tumblr better.
Features we could actually use on tumblr rather than this "feature update":
Mutuals Only Tab β like "Following", "For You", etc., but only shows posts from people you're actually mutuals with.
Custom Tabs β Let us decide whose posts show up in at least one tab without having to subscribe to notifications for them just to sort of achieve the same thing.
Mutuals Only Reblogs β Long requested feature to let us limit reblogs to only those who we are actually mutuals with.
Custom Reblog Limits β To further the "Mutuals Only" option, let us choose if we only want those who follow us, those who we follow, etc. reblog from us, as not everyone wants their stuff to spread site wide.
Mutuals Only Comments β Much like with reblogs, let us choose to restrict who can comment to just our mutuals.
Custom Comment Limits β Same with the reblogs, giving us more control on who can interact with our posts is never a bad thing.
Whitelists for Tag & Content Filtering β Kudos for actually giving us a blacklist option, but giving us whitelists would help with the content filtering's limitations where "grapes" gets filtered out because it contains a commonly blacklisted term.
Actually Do Something About The Scammers & Porn Bots β at this point, it really is just embarrassing at how inept it makes staff look, and one can only assume you're using them to farm ad revenue at this point.
To add on:
Being able to search for terms within the reblogs of a post: I would personally like this so I can see if a post already has an image description added without scrolling through a bazillion reblogs, but there's probably other utilities for it.
Giving us the option to completely remove posts with blacklisted terms from the feed: Goodness forbid you want to blacklist a specific word (ie. a deadname) because it's a trigger only for Tumblr to loudly call attention to the fact a post has a blacklisted term in it.
Letting people send in asks from side blogs: people have demanded that feature for a long while now. waterfall.social made side blogs independent from each other before it died, so I know it should be possible.
Anti-theft feature: waterfall.social also had a feature where if someone tried to repost your art, it got converted to a reblog of the original.
Let people who reblog a post turn off reblogs of their reblogs: This should've been a feature from the start, but now you've actively created a situation where this feature is absolutely necessary
Wait, I'm even more confused now
So the post I made under magichcuse tonight is subject to the new reblog nonsense, as you can see above.
But when I go to my Tumblr activityβ
I get both of the notifications?
It's not a mobile only thing either, it also shows up on desktop.
I don't get this. I still get notified when someone reblogs someone else's reblog but I don't get the notes from it??? Is this how it's supposed to work???
Discord Webhooks
I donβt know how reliable they are, but itβs a way to receive notifications for your blog on Discord! Here is a tutorial for how to create a webhook.
I kinda just created this webhook for my self indulgent server but you could theoretically use this feature to alert mutuals of new posts/replies/etc. Since you can have multiple webhooks in a server, you could each add your blog to the server!
Did some tests with some blogs I have connected to a Discord webhook and found something interesting:
I made the initial post on magichcuse then reblogged it to birdhcuse. I got the notification that birdhcuse reblogged my post. Then, I used an old account of mine completely detached from those blogs and my webhooks to add onto the birdhcuse reblog. Both magichcuse and birdhcuse got notified of the reblog from my old blog.
I don't know if it's a fluke since the new reblog system is still in the process of being rolled out, but if this isn't a fluke, I think I found a work around to receive notifications for RP replies!
PSA: THREAD REPLIES ARE NOW THEIR OWN POSTS.
For those unaware, tumblr staff has (probably been forced to by shareholders) updated so that each post is it's own post with it's own notes. Threads are still connected and can still be trimmed and reblogged, however each roleplay reply will have it's own set of notes (likes, reblogs, etc.). While it doesn't seem like the RPC will be affected compared to many of the other communities on tumblr, please be aware to check the notes of the previous thread reply to make sure you didn't miss anything, and use the drafting system to bookmark your WIP replies if you haven't already.
Now is as good a time as ever to recommend the amazing RPThreadTracker. It takes the guesswork out of whose reply it is.
I have a trick where I get notifications for RP blog stuff in a personal Discord server via a webhook, but I'm not sure whether or not this will affect that too
Hey fellas.
There's a blog named @/fucktrpc that's putting posts of dead animals in tags used for rpc. I'd recommend blocking that blog asap as they seem to be a troll blog looking to get some sick kicks.
Please feel free to reblog this to spread awareness.
PSA: Send me things unabashedly
I came back to RPing on tumblr after a two years break and I've had multiple new mutuals ask me if they can send me an IM or an ask and it breaks my little charcoal heart. What happened to the gleeful sending of random shit at 3am to the mutual you've barely interacted with before? I wouldn't even require that from a random non-mutual I've never seen before, yet we are mutuals.
Yes. Send me things. Asks and IMs. No. I don't care our muses haven't interacted before, or it barely makes sense. Worst that can happen is I'll have a giggle and delete the ask. There's also a reason crack verses exist.

Do y'all have any links to character/muse page themes? I'm trying to find some, but Tumblr's search feature is ass and it's bringing up posts that are completely irrelevant to what I'm trying to find
AMP-GUIDES: GETTING STARTED WITH RPing OCs IN THE RPC
Pointers for new or first-time OC players looking to get the ball rolling with writing original characters on Tumblr.
βΊ First off: why make a post like this?
...Because original characters in the RPC (particularly ones who AREN'T fandom OCs, who instead belong to their own original universe) don't have the starting boost of having an existing fandom behind them. They don't set out already recognisable to other players, so it can sometimes be a little tougher to drum up engagement.
βΊ Tip #1: Make your OC easy to know
Two things to keep in mind when trying to get an OC blog out there: 1: nobody knows your character except you. Ergo, 2: ...it's your number one objective to make your OC knowable and interesting to your hopefully-future-RP partners! People visiting your blog should have a way to quickly find out the basics of your character and what makes them tick. Keep in mind that having too much information can sometimes be as big of a roadblock to interaction as not having enough. Long bios documenting your OC's entire life-story can be useful to have around, but may be better to have in addition to a shorter and more succinct bio that neatly introduces the core concept of your muse. When you go hunting for a new book at the library or bookshop, do you dive into every book you pick up straight from page 1? Or do you check out the blurb first, to see if the plot even sounds interesting to you? Your muse doesn't need fancy powers or tragic backstory to be interesting, but regardless of if your OC is the plainest everyman or a secret superhero, you still have to let us see what makes it worth getting to know them. Make sure your pages contain the most basic of basics, such as name, gender (or just pronouns), age, and basic physical details, as well as where your muse comes from/what their world is like, a cursory introduction to their personality, and what they're up to at this point in their life. Establishing a setting and any goals can offer hooks for interactions with other muses. Other things that can be helpful are rundowns of their likes and dislikes, their positive/negative/neutral traits, and information on their strengths or weaknesses, or even the places you'd be most likely to find them.
βΊ Tip #2: Consider visuals
Faceclaims, icons, and fancy graphics are NOT mandatory to finding your OC's niche and having a good time in the tumblr RPC...but they can be nice to have around, and some players feel they can connect easier to OCs when they have a visual aid to help visualise your character. Even if you don't plan on using icons, having just one good quality image for your OC's bio can go a long way. But again: it's optional, so don't sweat it too much.
βΊ Tip #3: Shop around for fandoms with themes or settings similar to your OC's
Is your OC is from a fantasy background? Sci-fi? From a version of our own world? When you're getting started trying to find writing partners, you may find you're most likely to be successful reaching out to muses from canons that fit together well with what you're going for with your own OC. This doesn't mean you can't also shoot for cross-genre interactions, of course, but seeking out muses from fictional worlds similar to your own can be a good place to start.
βΊ Tip #4: Showcase your OC in action
Even if you're not writing threads just yet, in-character posts, open starters or short drabbles can all be a good indicator for newcomers of how your character interacts with others and with the world. Remember: nobody knows your character yet, so something that gives others a hint of your character's vibe can be useful for sparking interest in them. Writing short headcanon posts can be used to the same effect, as they can be a helpful and fun way to both flesh our who your muse is as a person, and to introduce tidbits about your character that don't necessarily come up in a bio section...which can offer more interesting lore about your muse and help other players identify things your characters might either bond or bicker over.
βΊ Tip #5: Don't forget about your fellow OCs
Don't be a stranger! If you know what a slog it can be to build traction for an OC blog then it makes sense to extend a little energy to your fellow OCs in the community. Take the time to check over other OC players' blogs, see if you might find their character interesting, or maybe even take a chance if you're on the fence...you can always unfollow later if you decide your play styles or your muses don't gel.
βΊ Tip #6: Don't get discouraged
OCs can have a harder time in fandom heavy RPCs. It's just a natural expectation of not having the "brand recognition" and pre-existing affection that canon muses frequently do. Some OCs have an easier time taking off than others, but don't give up if yours comes up on a slow start. If you're passionate about your muse and are willing to be a little patient, you'll find your crowd! If you ARE struggling to find people to write with, maybe shop around different promo tags and fandoms, and audit your OC's pages again to make sure that there's enough to draw folks in and that you're selling what makes them unique and engaging. OCs can sometimes take a little more work than canon muses to get out there, but don't listen to anyone who tells you the RPC doesn't like OCs or that they can't be really successful out here. It's true that writing an OC often necessitates being the one to reach out first, but it's a rewarding experience, and you'll be surprised how many people will be enthusiastic to get to know your muse and will grow to love them in time.
