Shooting off the Dribble
My dude DJ Shaw shared this with me this morning. Really good thoughts.
The keys, he says, are to quickly morph from dribbler to shooter and to embrace that uncomfortable, often chaotic transition. “It’s your handle and it’s your gather. And even though it may not ever be completely comfortable, you know what it should feel like when it’s a good one. I’ve done it enough to have that feeling.” -Damian Lillard on shooting off of the dribble.

The secret to high performance and satisfaction
The secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to better ourselves and our world. From Daniel Pink in Drive
High Peformance DNA
We're the sum of our behaviors. Ninety percent of our actions are driven by habits, whether positive or negative. Who we are today physically, emotionally, mentally, professionally and financially is a reflection of our behaviors and the choices we've made to this point.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see GENIUS. Because the people who are crazy enough to think the can change the world, are the ones who do.

Basketball, like life, is a leverage game. All players should be taught how to use every part of their body to gain advantage.

In-Season Week 3
Week 49 of 52; Day 336 of 365
Goal is to get two solid lifts in this week with the high school fellas.
Check out last weeks post if you want to see what we'll do. We'll either hit Day 1 and 2 or go 3 and 4.
Very productive this weekend. Heard some really powerful thoughts.
Leadership is more about RESPONSIBILITY than it is about authority.
Make decisions that allow you to to move forward in the direction you want to go.
Real faith is TAKING ACTION
The one that stuck out the most...
My personal sacrifice will always reflect my personal devotion.
Around this time every year I start to think about what I want to change, get better at or try in the upcoming year. I'm not really a New Year's Resolution type guy, but I do like to challenge myself in different ways.
My list for the last three years
Better - Get a little better everyday
Roots - Get back to what is really important to me
Epoch - Kind of a new beginning
I try to pick one word that will serve as my motivation for the year. A constant reminder of how I want to live.
Have a great week and as always if I can help you in any way let me know.
In-Season Week 2
Week 48 of 52; Day 329 of 365
"Give to the world the best you've got, and the best will come back to you." - Phog Allen
Week one is in the books. Hope you had a great first week! This week we'll try and get two good lifts in using "Week 2" of the schedule below hitting either days 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. After taking last week off because of try-outs we want to get the players back in the rhythm of lifting one or two times a week. We shouldn't be in the weight room any longer than 30 minutes. The goal is to continue to translate strength and power into basketball athleticism getting ready for our first game.
Looking ahead the next couple of weeks - We have a solid two weeks until we play.

Personally, Sunday is a big prep day for me. I try to get all my nutrition stuff taken care of so I'm not scrambling during the week. I've been really trying to simplify life and taking time on Sunday to get ready for the week has really helped. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Have a great week!
Ready or not the high school season is here...
I love high school basketball. Out of every organized team I've ever been on, my high school team shaped and impacted my life more than any other. The reason I coach and am so heavily involved in basketball is that I want players to experience the same thing I did. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of great programs where people went above and beyond to invest in me, and now its my turn to do the same. While some have been diligently preparing for the season, others have not. They are the ones that are worried about making a team or where they'll be in the rotation.
I always go back to three fundamental beliefs about people who are serious about anything.
1. Do you have your goals written down?
2. Do you have a plan of attack written down?
3. Do you do something everyday that gets you closer to where you want to be?
If you can't answer 'yes' to these questions I don't think you're really serious.
I like to say it's time to "cash the check" If players have been preparing in the off-season it's fun for them to show others how much they've improved.
They are ready!
They are excited!
They are confident!
It's a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Here's what the next couple of weeks will look like for us in the weight room. We're going to try and get two workouts a week up until we start playing games, after that we'll adjust to the beat of the players. I try to keep it really simple. Explode. Push. Pull. Core. We'll get our conditioning in practice, so there is no need for extra unless players are really out of shape. Remember, too much, too fast won't last. Make it your mission to keep players healthy. Have a great week!
One Week Out....
Today starts week 46 of 52; Day 315 of 365
We had a great staff meeting at Shoot 360 - You can check out my notes here: Click Here
This week is pretty much the same as last week, so check out last weeks post if you want further detail. Work with precision and detail!
If you live in Oregon or Southwest Washington, we’re officially one-week away from the basketball season which kicks off November 18th
What should you be doing this week? If players have been on a consistent program they should be transitioning from a Strength phase into a Power Phase. The goal here is to take the strength they’ve earned and turn it into explosive power. All lifts and movements should be done with total control, you still want your explosive movements to be fast and crisp, but as always safety is the number one priority. A great way to transition into this explosive phase is to add medicine ball slams, throws and tosses into your program.
Conditioning (Energy System Development) - Players should be playing at least two times a week as a bare miniumum. This is a great time for players to be getting individual skill workouts in.
Any extra conditioning should include basketball specfic movements with random starts and stops. Work 15-to-30 seconds of high intensity bouts followed by about two times the recovery. Plan about 5 to 10 minutes of interval work here depending on how much other work players are getting.
