JONATHAN BAILEY AS FIYERO TIGELAAR IN WICKED RAY BOLGER AS THE SCARESCROW IN THE WIZARD OF OZ
Life's more painless
For the brainless
Why think too hard?
When it's so soothing
Dancing through life
I've seen a lot of people lately harping about how "Wicked isn't canon to the Oz universe", "it's just glorified fanfiction", etc., and I can't express how silly that is, and how annoyed it makes me every time I hear it, lol. Baum's original Oz books were never meant to be some canonical series — they contradict each other constantly; Baum called it a "fairy story" with loose cohesion at best; and it only became a series at all because the first one got popular enough that Baum felt a duty to the fandom to keep making more (even after he had wanted to end it). And the 1939 film is every bit as much "fanfiction" as Wicked — it changes the story in both major and minor ways, including a complete shift of framing (i.e., making Oz into a dream rather than a real place).
Maguire's great contribution to the overarching legacy and lore of Oz was to harmonize the very weak "canon" of the older works with a different shift in framing: recontextualizing all of the prior Oz material as a revisionist history (going off of Baum's own idea framing of himself as a "Royal Historian of Oz"), and attempting to tell "the true story" behind the other works (fictively of course — we're never meant to literally think Maguire's version preceded Baum's, irl). In literary studies, this is called an urtext. The Wicked Years and its adaptations are as much "fanfiction" as the 1939 film: it's just self-aware of that fact in a way that earlier works weren't, and uses that perspective to deconstruct the material and explore deeper (and darker) themes — not simply adapting or reimagining the original text (as the 1939 movie did), but actively challenging it; interrogating it. It's not meant to be "canon" as such: it asks you to ask whether (and why) there is such a thing, and what that might say about the stories that we are meant to literally believe in, in real life.
ilnp having a topper called "limitless" that's a pink to green shift is so important to me actually
no i do not own it but its existence is enough
Horrendous violence on my cellular device every day since the movie dropped.
Ariana Grande on the set of Wicked having to say goodbye to her Glinda bubble:
attempting to say goodbye to my bubble after we finished filming my final scene in it (just in the bubble, not final scene in the films!) which actually happens to be one of the first that you see. • * the attachment i felt to my wand and my bubble was comically overwhelming. (please feel free to laugh) ! many, many long, beautiful days were spent here, in the sunshine, in the freezing rain and wind. we sang, we laughed, we shared tearful, complicated moments and silly ones alike. these props and physical pieces of her puzzle hold so much !!!!!!!! her bubble was a home away from home. a protective shell and a quiet, safe place for all of her little secrets and truths. her wand filled a void in her heart, it gave her a sense of purpose, strength and magic, even if that magic was somewhat in her head. i miss these physical pieces of her often. sorry this caption sounds like a literal eulogy.
New behind the scenes Wicked photos.
Pink.
this isn't a unique take or anything but. for good. it's just--
i don't know if i'm a good person and i don't know that i'm proud of the person i've become. but i am proud of who you made me. i am grateful for your belief in the better person i could be. i have a million regrets but i will never regret having loved you.
this was more coherent when it was swirling around in my brain but the point is beCAUSE I KNEWWWWW YOUUUUUUUUUUU
honestly rip to madame morrible who spent so long carefully cultivating elphaba as an asset only to COMPLETELY fucking blow it. i guess it might be more of the wizard's fault, idk whose decision it was, but. guys. the inciting incident for inviting elphaba to the emerald city WAS HER ACCIDENTALLY DOING MAGIC BECAUSE SHE WAS SO PASSIONATE ABOUT ANIMAL RIGHTS. and what do they do as the first "test" when they get her to the palace? THEY MAKE HER ENGAGE IN ANIMAL CRUELTY.
and also why the fuck did they decide to talk about their evil plans RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GIRLS. hello. OPSEC YOU GUYS. OPSEC. reminder that elphaba is VERY OBVIOUSLY ACTIVIST MATERIAL.
i do believe that elphaba is very strong in determination and character. but i also believe that if the villains hadn't stored their one (1) shared brain cell inside of a giant ugly mask they probably could've been even SLIGHTLY more subtle and gotten elphaba on their side, at least for a little while.
can we get some sort of Girls In The World's Messiest Schools Who Hate Gravity mashup of we're not done (we're not gonna stop til we fly) x do this thing (no the limit does not exist) x defying gravity (together we're unlimited)
by the way given my last post i would just like to express my gratitude to a) my Social Obligations for making me watch the wicked movie, and b) the wicked movie team for making it good. because i still haven't worked up the courage to watch the mean girls movie musical. the trailers did not do it for me, and the soundtrack??? nope. absolutely not. orchestration and mixing was not it for me. so anyways the point is i wasn't really inclined to watch wicked, but i am SO glad i did.
idk why but it just randomly occurred to me that my fave category of stories is Musicals Technically Told As A Memory By A Supporting Character Based On The Opening Song (But This Limited POV And Non-Linearity Actually Has No Narrative Significance. It Does Make The Opening A Banger Though). like
mean girls (a cautionary tale) is janis and damien retelling the story of their junior year (to a new class of north shore students, i believe, but i can't remember where i read that so idk if that's real)
hamilton (alexander hamilton) is burr reflecting on his relationship with hamilton (not to a specific audience afaik, but it's obviously a post-musical perspective)
wicked (no one mourns the wicked) is glinda either telling elphaba's story to the munchkin crowd, or just having a giant sad flashback
hadestown (road to hell) is hermes singing orpheus' story (again and again and again, given the whole "it's an old song and we're gonna sing it again" sitch)
there's something so so so special about "see someone's gotta tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well" and "this is a cautionary tale" and "me? i'm the damn fool that shot him" and "goodness knows the wicked die alone" you know???
i love the way the google ai is acting like Glinda Donut is a Traditional Bakery Item that is strictly defined as a brioche donut with a bubblegum glaze and pink edible glitter
the whole "water can melt her" thing is clearly both believed by the people (the crowd in "thank goodness") and sanctioned by the government (the posters in "no one mourns the wicked"). so, tragic headcanon: glinda is the one who spread the rumor.
she does it because she thinks it will help elphie, if people attack her with water instead of guns.
and then she mourns, because dorothy throws water on elphaba and elphaba screams and glinda watches her shadow melt away -- and she thinks that elphie's metaphorical blood is on her hands.
and what if i said that wicked isn't glinda being the villain, but rather the beginning of glinda's hero journey
(i'm right btw. fight me.)
no one:
absolutely no one:
me: actually, the use of micropleating to emulate the bottom of fungi in elphaba's costuming is to foreshadow that You Cannot Kill Her In A Way That Matters
