Unexpected arrivals...

So I was checking my tank before going to bed tonight, and discovered that it had about 7 more occupants than previously expected…that’s right, BABY SNAILS. 4 are about 0.5cm long, and 3 others are like tiny specks of sand measuring 0.1cm, barely. Of course, those were just the ones on the glass!

My first thought was how in the hell did they get there?? Was my snail pregnant? I bought all of my plants from tubes, how could there be snails? And then I remembered that I ALSO bought a piece of driftwood/Anubias from a petco community tank…that also contained mystery snails…they had to have come from there. How stupid of me.

Of course, I don’t want snails to take over my tank before it can even begin! I just don’t know what to do, and I don’t really want to play snail murderer…they’re kinda cute tbh. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to take care of baby snails? In both the mafia sense and maternal sense of the phrase “take care of” lol. Maybe a fish species that will eat snails? Or a natural remedy I can put in the water? Or perhaps I should get a new tank and name them after the 7 dwarves ;) Anything will help, because I literally have no idea what to do!

Depends on the kind of snail honestly. I love my pest snails because they help clean the tank and they don’t bother me when they’re on the glass(and I think that’s why most people don’t like em). But I also feed them to my puffer so I get rid of some that way

You could let these 7 live, and once they get big enough and start laying eggs you could easily just get rid of those

I’m so sad today because of the killing of harambe the gorilla. I hate this irony of humans trying to save animals only to still choose humans’ lives over the animals they promise to protect. Harambe didn’t do anything wrong. Animals never do anything wrong. Humans are the horrible fucking being who do things like neglect their children’s whereabouts in an obviously dangerous location. Seriously I’m so bummed. Gorillas are rare and endangered and one had to be brutally murdered because his life apparently meant less than that of a human’s.

Please please PLEASE don’t buy any blue tangs, clown fish, or any other fish/invertebrates in these movies. If you really want to see these pretty fish, there are many established aquariums which house some local and tropical fishes in well kept homes.

Also saying this because there is apparently a sea otter in the movie, but DO NOT APPROACH SEA OTTERS. They might look cute, but they are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, and disturbing it can potentially cause it to waste precious energy fleeing from you; energy it needs to grow, maintain body heat, forage, and what not. It is also ILLEGAL in the United States to harass a marine mammal.

If you really love the animals in this movie, protect them and their homes.

Garrett and I finally got an apartment! We can start moving in Monday!!

The place we are at now wants us out ASAP though and our animals out ASAP. They also put a lock box over the a/c control and I live in Arizona. It’s been in the 100′s almost every day. Not a good environment for the critters or us. My small mammal rescues have been having a really hard time with the heat. 

Right now is need minimum $250 to pay the deposit for Neptune (dog) to live with us. Sooner I get that the better. I may need a foster for Charlie (dog) so if you are interested in fostering a staffy/boxer/lab female 8 year old mix (Child. cat and other dog friendly, and friendly with new people, no health issues, located near Phoenix, AZ) email me and we can discuss that

Reptile keeper PSA

HEY GUYS! so, I know a lot of us use Exo-Terra plastic plants in our enclosures, and I’m no exception, since they’re so cheap and look decent.

but I just pulled one out of my Cuban tree frog’s enclosure, and I found this

that would be rusty wire sticking out of the plastic.

so I went and checked all my others, and sure enough, almost all of them had some protruding rusty metal wires.

Exo-Terra, are you fucking kidding me? how can you tell your customer base that this is terrarium-safe?? 

reptile/amphibian keepers: PLEASE remove these from your enclosures! don’t let your animals get exposed to potentially toxic levels of rust! 

I have had a few mysterious amphibian deaths recently and I’m starting to wonder. 

so please use these ONLY in arid/desert enclosures… or better yet, don’t use them at all!

I’m buying a detolf next month for the female mice and they’ll have soooo much space.

… I’m the least crafty person ever though so we’ll see if I can make a lid without destroying everything.

Oh! I did the same thing for my gerbils! It’s on it’s side, and has worked great for about 5 years now. 

The glass door should have two pieces of metal (one on each side) that fit snuggly and are used as the hinge for the door. You should be able to pull those off and use them for your replacement lid.

For the actual lid I used those plastic frames you use to make the screens on windows. Most hardware stores have the pieces to build a custom sized frame.  I then took a sheet of wire fencing/meshing (from the outdoor section) and cut it down with wire cutters to fit the lid. (I should mention it’s a square pattern grid. Diamond shaped grids can cause a freak accident where your animal gets stuck. Anything with a “V” shape is something to be cautious about.) The mesh is lightweight enough not to cave in at all but sturdy for persistent rodent teeth! Finally, I used a roll of wire to wrap around the mesh to the frame, essentially “sewing” it in place. It’s not the prettiest up close, but it’s stand up to some intense chewing and even naughty cats jumping on top of it.

I was able to wedge those metal hinges onto the frame I had made, making a fully functioning hinged lid!

You may have found a different way to go about making it, but I wanted to share my experience in case it comes in handy! It took a couple of trial and errors to find what worked for me.

I’ve been in the reptile community for almost a year now and I can safely say that it has changed so much, and not in a good way.

I miss the old reptiblr. I miss a time where we had a loving community who liked to help people with their reptiles. I miss the community that posted cute snake pictures and got cute comments in return. I miss the debates–not about drama, but about husbandry. I miss the helpfulness and kindness of the members.

I never really talked to many people on here– there are some, and you know who you are—but I still thought of everyone here as part of this community. Now, that has changed.

This community is toxic and hateful. While it has provided me with an escape in the past, it’s now a source of stress for a lot of members. Even so, a lot of new members have joined, yes, but a lot more have left. Some that were the reason I made a reptile account in the first place.

Instead of striving to make it better, we’ve spiraled out of control. We will never be able to return to what we once were and I fear that the problems that have been plaguing us for months are unfixable. I wish to make us better or help us in some way, but I don’t know how. Everything is just getting worse and worse.

A year is a long time and change is bound to happen, but we took a step in the wrong direction. We fell into a deep hole and I’m not quite sure if we’ll ever be able to get out of it.

you guys remember when PETA stole people pets off their porches and euthanized them?

you guys remember how it came out that PETA kills about 90% of the animals it takes in, including healthy and adoptable puppies and kittens, stating “ We could become a no-kill shelter immediately. It means we wouldn’t do as much work”?

you guys remember when PETA advocated killing all pit bulls for the crime of being pit bulls?

you guys remember when PETA handed out these comics to children when there were no adults looking?

you guys remember when they made a porn site and then filled it with videos of animal abuse, and (also in that link) claimed cats should be vegetarian?

you guys remember when PETA lied about sheep shearing, got caught, and defended the lie as true even after they admitted the sheep in their picture wasn’t even real?

you guys remember when they tried to excuse their horrifying ways by claiming that the person who exposed them was manipulating the facts by taking them and putting them in the wrong context?

Because I remember. I remember everything.

Because PETA does not care about animals. they do not care that these dogs live and breathe and feel and want love like every other dog. they do not care about the history of human/dog bonding and co-evolution, they do not care that dogs and human beings have relied on each other for millennia, they do not care that its cruel and morally repugnant to put down an animal just because you can, they do not care about animals. 

PETA cares about money and publicity, its a corporation run by a psychopath who is afraid of pitts as it states in the link: she was apparently bit by one, and now she hates them. 

PETA doesn’t give a rats ass about animals. They just want to kill and make money off of idiots who fall of their spiel.

-spread false information about milk causing autism based on outdated bullshit information

-used holocaust imagery to compare the meat industry to concentration camps (no pictures)

-used a young man’s brutal death as a way to say “yeah that’s awful but it happens to animals every day and nobody cares about that” (tw: no pictures but the way the guy died is described and it is really horrible)

-dressed up in KKK robes and protested outside of the Westminister Dog Show to protest breeding/pure bred dogs (tw: racism)

-offered to pay the water bill for literally the poorest neighborhood in Detroit if and only if they all went vegan for a month (tw: self-righteous shitheads)

-and they definitely didn’t have two of their workers accept perfectly healthy animals from an animal hospital, with the implication that they would give them good homes, clarify that these animals were all healthy and well-tempered, and then euthanized them all in the back of a kill-van before dumping their dead bodies behind a grocery store (tw: PICTURES OF DEAD ANIMALS, animal death)

-and they totally didn’t get off pretty much scot-free for it because PETA has loads of money and lawyers to defend themselves, which coincidentally might be why the Cerate family hasn’t seen justice for their kidnapped and murdered dog, Maya. (tw: animal death)
