The first original audio drama from Hemlock Creek Productions, “Liars & Leeches” delves deep into the complicated horrors of grief, trauma, resilience, and steadfast human determination to uncover the truth.

I think the summary on the website does a decent job of describing what the main character Tonya goes through, but she is a black woman who loses her sister and brother in law unexpectedly in a mass shooting. As she struggles to overcome her grief, she discovers someone-or something- is following her.

She really goes through it over the course of the story, but through it all she is incredibly brave, insightful, and curious, and although she knows the importance of relying on her friends (both new and old) through the season, she is also incredibly tough, resilient and can stand up for herself.

The actor playing her (Kendell Byrd) won best leading performance in an audio drama at the New Jersey Web Fest in 2023 for her role as Tonya.

Grief, trauma, horror, and a protagonist going through it, I know how much many of you love that sort of a story~

Audio Drama Sunday - 19th November ✨

Happy Audio Drama Sunday!! I had such a busy week again but spent most of it thinking about the end of Wolf 359 🥲

🦀 @thesiltverses (36) Jesus Christ, this episode made me feel tooo many things.I was genuinely unsettled by this newly introduced God and that terrible feeling of waiting for the inevitable to happen, whilst also being so invested in the blossoming relationship. And the sound design was absolutely popping OFF. God, the last 30 seconds? Someone resuscitate me. Incredible choices were made and the pay off was heart breaking. 

🧳 @monstrousproductions (2) Travelling Light continues to be so, so lovely for the ears! Even so early on, the world-building is so accomplished and I want to live there 🥺 Our traveller seems like such a sweetheart and I’m looking forward to finding out who they help next!

 💫  I finished Wolf 359 this week and oh my goddd, they really saved all the best twists until last, didn’t they. I completely understand why this is so many people’s most favourite audio drama of all time. The characters, the plot, the comedy, it’s got everything. Listening really made me want to be better at everything from a creator point of view and I love feeling inspired like that!! 

⚓️ @eelerschoice (4) Aaah, I had such a good time eeling this week! I love the magic in this show and the consequences of using such magic feel so real! I can’t believe we’re halfway through, I don’t want it to end! 

❤️‍🔥I started The Love Talker this week. I’m usually a bit wary of horror that centres violence against women (a certain Stephen King burned me a few too many times) but I’m interested to see where this goes! It’s so, so strange to hear W Keith Tims as this awful, malevolent character after being using to hearing him as The Book of Con’s Simon!!

Hi! I randomly stumbled across this podcast while looking for something light and funny to listen to all day and it has been perfect! I’m halfway through it now and the music fits so perfectly it adds so much to the vibe. Every time I think I know what to expect it catches me off guard (sentient coins???!?). I’ve been feeling pretty down for a while and having a good podcast to listen to helps so much.

This week has found me a little behind schedule. Episode 13 is taking longer to produce because of some things going on in my personal life

Hey all,

So wanted to be transparent about why episodes 11 and 12 (and soon to be 13) don't have commentaries up on the patreon yet.

The short answer is I've delayed them to tackle some personal life things happening this month that have completely taken over my schedule. None of it is bad, it is just a lot. A sample of a few of the things I'm juggling atm:

​Got invited to speak at my first academic conference so I need to finish the academic paper for that as well as the presentation.

​My teaching load at the university where I work is the most it's ever been so I'm still trying to balance that effectively.

​There is a whole other audio drama, "The Distant Silence Radio Hour" I am working on with my brother to release at end of October.

And ​my partner and I are moving at nearly the exact same time the academic conference takes place.

​

My partner and I often joke that I only seem to be able to get things done when they're due all at once 😅

But honestly, in the thick of all that, the commentaries got pushed to the sidelines as I've just run out of mental bandwidth to do them at the moment. They'll still get released when my schedule lightens up a bit.

That does bring up the uncomfortable question this has let me avoid, however. I wanted the first 10 commentaries to be free so anybody can check them out with the intention that the coms for 11 and onward would be behind a new patreon tier. But the more I look back on those initial recordings, I feel like they're so sloppy I feel bad asking anyone to pay anything for for something like them. How much of that is true and the rest imposter syndrome, I don't know, but if you have enjoyed or even not enjoyed those first ten, I'd love to hear what you'd want changed or added to make that experience more, eh, "valuable" as much as I hate to phrase it that way.

I don't want the discussion around the commentaries to devolve into "money money money" for obvious reasons. They are important to me as a way to be transparent about the show and it's short comings, the research I do to make it, and the joy I have sharing all the neat stuff I find. But I still want them to be a quality experience and I just don't think they're at the level yet where they "deserve" a price tag per se.

One Thousand Download Stuff!

No only is there a new episode today, but we've hit 1,000 downloads! I'm blown away by all the love this show has gotten and to celebrate, I'm releasing commentaries for each of the first 10 episodes, all of which will be up on the Patreon, ad free and open to anyone!

These have been a labor of love and something I've been wanting to make a regular part of the show for a long time. Doing even this relatively "low-effort" audio content has been a huge learning process but it has taught me a lot about documenting research and talking about my creative process.

If you enjoy that kind of nerdy stuff, these are for you. Hopefully you can also suffer through an additional hour of me rambling about all the things I try to cram into this show.

1k downloads isn't the biggest milestone, but it means a lot to me to have so many people enjoying what I thought would just be a creative exercise I wrote primarily for myself.
