im literally always saying this
Shit just happens to you when you're a tuna crab
I need to stop replying to âhow do you make friends in your 30s?â threads because all my answers boil down to âyou have to want to know people instead of have friendsâ and I donât think people wanna hear that
Itâs like. People can tell if you donât really like or connect with them. If you arenât truly enamored with someone you will have a hard time coming up with activities to do together to deepen the friendship. Because you donât really like that person that much.

the way prehistoric animal documentaries will talk about extinction like it happens because of âa failure to evolveâ as though evolution is a meritocracy is so funny and so scary
this species persisted over the eons because of its Protestant work ethic to produce more of a specific kind of digestive enzyme that allowed it to extract 4% more nutrients from the dominant plant species in the area
Ned Chicane really drove a 1958 Lincoln Continental into a flaming cave whilst wearing a Chewbacca costume covered in animal shit and the contents of a septic tank to save a town full of people who didnât like him from a creature he didnât even believe in three days prior and he still thinks of himself as a coward. real question though when did it become a thing to refer to her as âhelen of troyâ? itâs common in modern english, but in ancient texts iâve just seen her referred to as áźÎťÎνΡ/áźÎťÎνι/Helene/Helena, no need to specify, thereâs only one helen, everyone knew who was meant. who gave her the epithet? when did it happen that she became helen âof troyâ?
alright: the mid-late-nineteenth century pre-raphaelites use it, byron uses it, goethe uses it, cervantes uses it. marlowe and shakespeare, though, both call her âhelen of greeceâ but not âof troy.â cervantes seems about the earliest âbigâ author to use it
i found this in a 1755 âGeneral Magazine of Arts and Sciences Philosophical, Philological, Mathematical, and Mechanicalâ (under âmiscellaneous correspondence, essays, poetryâ etc., printed for w. owen in london:
(âpriorâs apellesâ appears to be the poem âprotogenes and apellesâ by matthew prior (1664-1721), but the poem sheds no light on why helen should be âof troyâ and not âof greeceâ)
and references to âhelen of greeceâ are common through the early eighteenth century (and make a lot of sense, given the apparent connection of her name to hellas, the greek term for âgreeceâ)
so my guess is that the shift starts to catch on in the first half of the eighteenth century, probably more the second quarter of the eighteenth century, and increases a lot in popularity with the circulation of don quixote. by the late eighteenth century it starts popping up more and more and seems a firmly established thing by the time the romantics come onto the scene.
