Letting you go was the w o r s t thing I've ever done. It's the most p a i n f u l thing I've ever done, and I'm a guy who's had e i g h t y t w o surgeries. My threshold for pain is pretty high.

Teddy only raised an eyebrow, continuing her teasing, “No seriously, what have you done?” But quickly her expression turned to one of gratitude, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of her lips and she leaned up to softly bump her nose against his. “I have the world,” She said, her own arms coming up to wrap around his shoulders loosely, “Although I’m definitely not opposed to you getting me a cute puppy and flowers every time you want to remind me how lucky I am.” She giggled, although she couldn’t quite comprehend how he didn’t see how loved he made her feel. She felt safer with Henry that she had done in years, and that made her whole world better even outside of their home. “I could definitely go for pizza and a movie,” Although her smirk said that she was also open to the more underlying suggestions in his tone. It had been a very long day at work. Almost immediately it was like she’d forgotten about their plans for later, her smirk turning into an ecstatic grin and her eyes leaving her husband to look at their pet. For perhaps the first time since they’d been together, she had no hesitation to leave her husband’s arms as she made her way over to the couch. “I get to name him?” She asked excitedly, sitting down by the pup as she reached out to stroke his soft fur.

Henry laughed and shook his head. “If I were to buy you a puppy every time, we’d be overrun with them. We would have to move.” He grinned as she obviously understood his suggestions for their evening and a laugh erupted in his chest as her focus shifted entirely onto their new puppy. “And she’s gone.” He mumbled teasingly as he moved over with her and sat beside her. “Yep you get to name him, babe. Anything you want, as long as it’s not something heart related...That is where I draw the line.” His hand reached out to her thigh almost instinctively, it had become somewhat of a habit. “I hope I haven’t just replaced myself as the love of your life with a dog because I’ll take him back...” He joked, he was smitten himself and wouldn’t dream of ever returning the dog. “I love you and I promise to always show you that whether it be with dogs, flowers or this, close your eyes for a second.” He reached into his pocket with a smile, while out getting the dog, he had stopped by a jewellery store and picked out a beautiful wedding ring which he had taken home in a small box, they’d been officially married for around a year with no rings so he just had to, it was better late than never. He hadn’t planned on giving it to her for a while yet but he felt as though now was the perfect time, they were at peak happiness in this moment. Once her eyes were closed, he opened the box and took the ring out, he took her hand and pushed the ring gently onto her ring finger. “You can open your eyes now.”

ethically, she had to be the one to tell teddy. sometimes andrea thought that was why she got to adopt henry as a patient, so teddy knew what kind of hands he was in. she also knew that if the worse case scenario happens, andrea would be the one to tell her. as her friend and as her husbands doctor. “henry, listen - “ she placed a hand on his shoulder, eyes focusing in on his. “i’m there for you and for her every step of the way. if that happens - “ which if you asked andrea, it would never happen. “ - i’ll be completely truthful with both of you like i have been the whole time.” but then she shifted, rolling chair turning her to face him head on. “but i want you to know, you’re in good hands. i’m going to do everything i can so that you and teddy can live a happy long life together. as a friend and as your doctor, that’s a promise.” 

Henry understood she was good but his condition was complex and things went wrong all the time even when they weren’t supposed to. “I know that you’re good and I know that you’ll do everything you can, but sometimes that just isn’t enough, Andrea. This stuff is complicated and who knows what’s going to happen. They might find a cure for me tomorrow, they might never find a cure but I do know that you’ll do your best and I do honestly trust you with my life, I just don’t want to get my hopes up ever you know. I act all big and tough on the outside but Andrea, I am terrified. I don’t want to leave Teddy behind, she is the love of my life and I want to spare her from all the pain that me dying could cause.” He sighed and gave an apologetic smile. “You really shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep though. It’s not all in your hands. I could bleed out and die tomorrow and that wouldn’t be on you. Please don’t put too much responsibility on yourself for this, you can only do so much for me.” Henry didn’t mean to get so morbid but a lot of the time he held it in, he didn’t want to burden Teddy with it. He didn’t want to make her sad. “When the time comes, I need you to make sure that she is happy and I want her to find love again, I don’t want her to be alone.”

It didn’t seem as though Teddy minded that he’d gotten the dog without her, she was practically jumping up and down on the spot once she was over the initial shock of the puppy just appearing in her home. How could she have possibly been mad at the fact that Henry had gotten her a dog? Especially when it was right in front of her! Anyway, she was hoping that the pet would provide some company for her husband when she couldn’t be. She fought off the urge to make grabby hands at the newest addition of their family, happily being wrapped up in Henry’s arms. “It’s a good day now,” She smiled, leaning into his soft kisses and not caring how cheesy that might have sounded. She allowed her eyes to scan around the room, taking in all his work before eagerly kissing him back as their lips met. She pulled away a moment later, her eyes narrowing as they flickered between his face and the vase of flowers. “Okay, what did you do?” She teased, although she couldn’t help feeling slightly suspicious, “Did you break something?”

“I did absolutely nothing. Can I not do something nice for my wife without there being an ulterior motive?” Henry raised an eyebrow and ran his arms down Teddy’s arms. “I just feel like sometimes I don’t really show you how much I appreciate and love you and you deserve to know that. You deserve the world, Teddy and I want to be the one to give it to you. Getting us a dog is just the start of that.” He pushed some hair behind her ear and smiled. “Maybe we should just get a couple of pizzas and have a night in bed...” His voice was almost suggestive, a night with his hot, hot wife in bed was something that he would always choose over anything else in the world, even perfect health. “You still need to give that little guy a name.” He pointed over to the dog who had made himself very comfortable on their couch.

“i’m going to biopsy the tumor first, to see if it’s cancerous. if it isnt, i’ll just remove it completely and see how he recovers to hopefully avoid a full transplant. if it is, i’ll remove it and i’ll have to call oncology.” it was a sad fate, but andrea would do everything in her power to keep the young man alive. “hey, not if i can help it.” was this too much? andrea had spent hours in this exact same exam room doing the same thinking for henrys scans. “this is worse than yours, you know. do you want to see them?” that was probably against every HIPPA law out there, but henry was worth it. who would he sue? all in all, the person that would be getting in trouble would have been his own wife. “hey, i knew i liked you for a reason!” 

“No, no, it’s okay. I think I’d prefer to stay somewhat oblivious.” Henry liked not really knowing things, it made things easier when he was laying in bed, sometimes the doctors words would just go over his head. He looked at the picture that Andrea was studying again and frowned. “I hope he’ll be okay. I can’t imagine -- well, I can but I guess it’s something that I’m just used to now. I don’t like to think of other people going through what he was going through. For what it’s worth, if I was facing that sort of prognosis, you would be the one I want to tell me.” He admitted, it was nice to have a friendly face like Andrea’s on his side and he really did appreciate her. “You will be the one to tell me, won’t you? If something’s too much? Tumour too big? Wrong place..All that crap, it’s gotta be you and you’ve gotta be the one to tell Teddy too.” He knew that it was a lot of responsibility to put on Andrea but he wouldn’t have said it all if he didn’t think that she could handle it.

“it’s a sad one,” she had to admit. not everyone could take these types of stories, but henry had his warning. “he’s 30. do you see that?” andrea pointed to a part of the photos, “those are his lungs and that’s a tumor.” she had a similar reaction to when she saw scans of henry. when the patients were that young and their body was going through that much, it just gave her more confidence in wanting to help. “he came in last night, but we took pictures to make sure what we were really dealing with. the patient is a really nice guy too. star wars nerd who taught me all about some clue about how there’s going to be a new movie. did you know there are like 57 star wars films? it’s crazy.“

Henry exhaled slowly as Andrea spoke. “That’s rough...can you do anything? Is he going to be okay? Will he die?” Henry felt a little shaken up all of a sudden, his own mortality becoming very obvious to him in that moment, that could easily be his own insides that he was looking at. He shook his head as if to pull himself together and looked up at Andrea. “I never really got into all the Star Wars hype, I’m more of a DC guy..”

“It is 2020 after all, screw woman always having to take the husband’s last name right? It is acceptable for the men to take the woman’s last name. Unfortunately that’s what my brother-in-law did and I don’t like that he’s associated with our family so maybe not the best option. But thanks, it’s something to think about.” Amelia smiled as well as she mentally weighed the pros and cons. She. knew he was right, that she would have more than enough time to make a decision regarding her name. “Yeah I do love him, and I hope you’re right. Smooth sailing from here on out but something tells me everything’s about to get more complicated instead of less.”

“Not a fan of your brother in law then?” Henry laughed a little as Amelia spoke, he couldn’t imagine taking Teddy’s last name, that was a name that she had built up and he wouldn’t force her to have his name either because again, she had worked hard for her name and he couldn’t expect her to change it for him. “Why do you think everything is going to get more complicated? I hope that’s not the case though, if you need me to kick any asses I’ll give it a good go.”

“maybe because when i usually see you here, i’m supposed to be your doctor.” andrea motioned him inside, patting the chair next to her. there was this unspoken rule about henry. doctors gave him access to more than they shouldve because even though andrea was the doctor on his charts, everyone looked out for him as much as they could. 

“Well, I see where you’re coming from, but I’m okay, I promise.” He sat beside her with a smile. “So, explain to me what all of this is. I wanna know it all.” He squinted his eyes a little looking at what she was looking at and wondered if she had ever looked at any scans of his with this much concern in her face.

It had been a long day, but then again Teddy couldn’t remember the last time she hadn’t had a long day at work. But she had no idea just how busy her husband had been while she had spent her day running between ORs and filling out paperwork that made her question why she’d ever became a doctor in the first place. She tilted her neck to the side, hoping to relieve some of the pressure that had built, as she turned her key in the lock. “Only me!” She called out as she entered their home, her foot kicking the door closed as she shrugged off her coat. “Oh you’re-” She’d been about to express her happy surprise that he was in the sitting room, having thought she’d have to make her way through the apartment to find him, when a new level of surprise came over her. Her mouth dropped open as she took in the dog and what that meant. “Henry, that’s a dog!” She cried happily, beaming as she realised what that meant, “You got me a dog?” Although more accurately he had gotten, them a dog. She just hadn’t thought that he would remember.

Henry’s face lit up at Teddy’s happiness, he was expecting her to be happy but a part of him thought maybe she would be mad that he had gone alone, but surprises were fun. “I got us a dog, babe.” He walked over to her with the small black labrador puppy in his arms. “I’m sorry I got him without you but I really wanted to surprise you. I know you’ve wanted one for a while, so I thought why not. You can name him though, I’ll give you that.” He placed the dog on the floor and wrapped his arms around Teddy with a grin. “You had a good day? I’ve been very busy, clearly.” He pressed a kiss on her head and looked at her, “I’m going to cook you dinner too, I planned to do that before you came home but our dog wanted to play instead and really, how could I say no to that face? He’ll sleep soon and I can cook, or we can order in and snuggle on the sofa, it’s up to you but first you need to give him a name. Oh I got you some flowers too.” He pointed to the vase on the island with some roses in as he kissed her again.

“woah!” it wasn’t every day that henry popped up in the hospital without her knowing. “what are you doing here? is everything okay? are you okay?” she had gotten a page a little bit ago, but had ignored it for other reasons. if they had really needed her, someone would’ve come to find her. or at least they would make it a 911. “does teddy know youre here?” was she missing something? andrea didnt like missing anything.

Henry smiled at Andrea’s concern, it was sweet. “I’m fine, honestly. I just thought why not come and have a good look around. I came to surprise Teddy for lunch and she is in a surgery, so I guess I really should have checked first, I’ll remember that for next time.” He laughed and shook his head a little. “I think you’re surprised so at least that makes one person.” Even if it’s not the right person, he thought.

“Why thank you. I’m still not sure if I want to keep my last name or maybe some kind of last name combination or hyphenate it.” Amelia explained, shrugging her shoulders as she pondered on the debate in her mind. “People are sort of used to the Shepherd name by now, it opens doors and such you know? Maybe Shepherd-Kerrigan? If I did change it, I wouldn’t be referred to simply as Derek’s younger sister. I have time to decide on that before the wedding. I mean Teddy kept her name, sure it wasn’t an ideal situation for a wedding in your case, but nonetheless it’s valid.”

“These are all decisions that you can make over time, you really don’t need to be overloading your mind with questions that you can answer, but for what it’s worth, I like you as Amelia Shepherd. It’s the name that you have built yourself with, but again, plenty of time.” He smiled and thought back to the day he an Teddy had married, it had all been a formality, there was no romance and no love, at that point. “You love this guy, right? Everything else will just fall into place, you’ll see.”

Teddy was working and Henry was attempting to keep himself busy. He’d had his eye on something for a while now and had finally come to the decision that he was going to buy it, today. It was something for him and Teddy and he was sure that she would love it so he had no doubts in his mind that today was the day. He got a taxi downtown and headed to a couple of stores first to get some things that they would need and then he headed over to where said item was being sold. He took one look at it and knew that it was perfect. A quick taxi ride home and he headed up to their apartment with the surprise. He put a bow on it, laid everything out that he had bought and looked around at all his hard work pretty proud of himself. He sat and waited for Teddy to come home, excited beyond belief to surprise her with their first ever dog.

“no,” this didnt seem right. “maybe its the four cups of coffee i’ve had - “ she paused. “starting at 4am also probably wasnt the best either, but this doesnt make any sense.” andrea took a step back from the xray machine, arms crossing against her chest. “also it might be the chicken caleb made last night, but i think i’m seeing two hearts.” maybe she shouldn’t be at the hospital anymore? ( @traumastart ) 

Henry was walking around the hospital, finally on his feet again after several days in bed when he heard a familiar voice coming from one of the rooms. He headed towards the familiar voice and smiled. “Hey, you sound — confused.” He looked at what she was looking at and gave a shrug, “I’d help you if I had any idea at all what I was looking at. You’d think after seeing all of my own X-Rays over the years I’d be able to read them, but no.”

   “usually you can tell whether something’s important or whether someone in hr has told management to send out an email to cover something up.” sora wouldn’t put it past anyone in her workplace to take drastic measures; she would pounce on the opportunity if she found herself compromised. “i’m sure if anything really urgent comes in, someone will either page me, or simply pull me in for a telling off. i really don’t need it in an email, it’s too distracting.”

“I agree, if it was something important why would anyone send it in an email? That’s just asking for it to be left and forgotten about.” Henry shrugged a little as he spoke, he’d never really understood emails when people could just pick up the phone and call. “If I were you, I would just turn my email notifications off, problem solved.”

“I think you just became my go-to person for wedding advice. Expect a few phone calls when the time comes to plan whether I want to get married in Seattle or on some tropical destination.” Amelia grinned up at Henry thankful she was at least now a step in some kind of direction when it came to wedding plans. “I think she’d like a ring, maybe for your anniversary? That way it wouldn’t be completely random and it serves as a good occasion for such a gift. I’d probably also take someone like Owen ring shopping with you unless you know exactly what type of ring she is going to want.”

“I’ll take that. I don’t mind being someone’s wedding guy. Even though technically my wedding was a little bit fraudulent.” He nodded with a smile, she was right. It would seem strange to put out a ring at a random time so their anniversary would be the perfect time to do it. “That’s a good idea. I’m sure Owen knows her better than anyone else, even better than me I think.” He looked down at the ring on Amelia’s finger and smiled. “That is quite a stone, you’re a lucky lady by the looks of it.”

“My third actually - but second pregnancy. I have three year old twin girls,” Lizzie said, smiling and thinking it was sweet that Henry seemed genuinely interested. “Thank you, this one was a surprise but we’re excited all the same. Not exciting though is the all day morning sickness– which you got a first row seat for, which I am really sorry about,” Lizzie said laughing a little as she shook her head and got comfortable on her chair. “Mhm, the in-house entertainment of Seattle Grace - we’re like the Kardashians but with scalpels.” she said, knowing what everyone in the hospital thought of her family and finding the humour in it. “Well when I’m not throwing up in patient’s rooms, I’m the head of fetal surgery. So basically I fix babies up without them being born yet so they can continue to get all cute and chubby before they make their way into the world.” 

“Twins? Really? That’s awesome.” He smiled genuinely as he spoke, the smile lighting up his entire face. “Sometimes, the best things come as a surprise.” He thought back to how he and Teddy had met, that had certainly been a surprise. He put his hand up and shook his head. “It’s fine, I’m really not bothered. It’s nice to actually have some company, even if it is someone throwing up.” He teased a little, if they were to become friends he would probably never let that go. He listened as she spoke about what she did, it was interesting. He only ever got to hear about cardio between Teddy and Andrea so hearing about something new entirely was welcome. “I bet that’s good and bad for you being pregnant. I mean, because you know what to look out for but you also know all the things that could go wrong. I really don’t know how you do it.”
