Easter is right around the corner, yet again, meaning many-many more countless baby bunnies will be the victims of the pet industry at this particular time of year, placed on the sales shelf at too young of an age & bought on an impulse by ill prepared parents who are only looking to make their children smile for a short while until the novelty wears off & is gone forever, and then poor Thumper gets put out in the backyard, maybe handed over to the first person to show up with cash or set loose in a field a few miles down the road, because those parents had no idea such a small animal could be so destructive or defecate that much or that such a âlow maintenanceâ pet could require so much upkeep! And so in the end it is the rabbit that pays the ultimate priceâŚ
As the only rabbit ârescuerâ in a small rural town, once Summer comes, as it is every year, I will be pelted with the phone calls & messages asking me to take in more unwanted rabbits, just as it has been each year for the last seven years and unfortunately I do not have the space or money to put towards your mistake and your ignorance, your responsibility to that animal, the pet that you made a commitment to - the rabbit you expect me to take off of your hands when I have my own pets to keep in mind, but still I offer all that I can to get that rabbit to a safe place where it will be properly cared for, whether I take it in or not⌠which I will repeat again next year

Believe it or not, rabbits actually cost just as much & sometimes even more than a dog, they require just as much attention, care & maintenance, and if properly cared for rabbits typically live 8 to 10 years & even longer! The rabbit photographed here is Wilbur, who came to me in the Summer of 2008 at about five years of age when his owner, a rather unfortunate family acquaintance, decided he had become such a terrible burden to âcare forâ, just as it has been for every other unwanted rabbit I have taken in since him.
