I’m obsessed with the ambiguity in what Shane says to Yuna when they talk outside. Like the words he chooses are very specific but they encompass SO MUCH. “I tried really hard but I just can’t help it and I’m sorry” is simply the most insane and heartbreaking line ever I’m so not normal about this..

“I tried really hard but I just can’t help it” I tried to not be gay. I tried for it to be women (even with the perfect woman). I really really tried for it to not be Ilya. I tried for it to be anyone else. I tried for it to be no one at all. I tried for it to not matter. I tried to just focus on what was supposed to matter. I tried to make hockey the only thing that mattered. I tried to keep this thing separate. I tried to not have it mess anything up. I tried to put the pieces back together. I tried to not break anything in the first place.

After watching episode six I’ve been left with a pit in my stomach and a hollowness in my chest like I’m still waiting for something to happen. Like the episode was cut off far too soon and the “big thing” that was supposed to happen in this part of the story didn’t happen and was somehow left out. But I think that is just my brain being so used to the part in the story where someone dies or is outed or they break up or someone cheats or they simply just can’t be together for one reason or another and I can think of so few other pieces of media like this episode where I get to watch queer people just be. And maybe part of that is because I know all of the craziness that’s coming in the future seasons (based on the long game) but for now I don’t have to be sick it my stomach waiting for the other shoe to drop and I get to relax and enjoy this wonderful little show and also just be.

I sometimes feel that this endless discussion about what is and what isn’t ‘good queer rep’ is poisoning art. just let art breathe, let queer stories exist, even if you don’t like them or they don’t represent you personally. queer media undergoes so much unnecessary scrutiny because there’s this distorted perception that every piece of queer fiction ever put into the world needs to represent every queer person. and that’s not only impossible, but also unfair to the creators and the story itself. it’s okay to just not vibe with a piece of queer media, but please consider that it may be a matter of personal taste and preference, rather than an objective flaw in the portrayal of the community

I’ve been thinking about 1x03 of The Last of Us and I think why it kicked so many of us right in the heart so hard is because, fundamentally, it said “hey, you’re not going to change this incredibly traumatic forever-altered world you’re in. You - as one person- cannot do that. It is the single most important thing to live and love and build things anyway, you cannot put those things off until the world goes back to normal because it won’t, ever, but there’s room for strawberries here, in this version of this world.”

I think that’s why this particular story doesn’t feel exhausting or entrapping in the way most apocalypse media does in a world that still very much dealing with March of 2020.

january is one of those months where you experience every feeling on the human spectrum and you just have to go about your day like that isn't happening
