ok i finally have time to go more in depth with this so here we go. my point of this all (incase it wasn’t clear) is that if we’re going with the theory that 15x19 was a cop-out ending made for the bronly fans wherein there is a metatextual element that god/chuck dies and no longer holds power over sam and dean, along with how the writers/creators of supernatural no longer control them, then 15x20 must be what supernatural is in the hands of the viewers. us. the fans…and so we take a look at an episode that drew from this exact concept. 10x05 Fan Fiction.
“We do sing a cover of ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ in the second act.”
Carry On. the episode title of 15x20. second act.
but let’s look at act 1, or what would be 15x19:
driving Baby. but dean says something important about this:
he’s not happy about a bronly ending. dean, representative as us the viewers in the entirety of s15, is not happy about it.
when did we get a callback to swan song? you know, the episode where michael and lucifer fight? oh, that’s right:
IN 15x19. and she’s right, chuck stepped out of the narrative after 15x19. after this swan song.
this is when dean breaks the fourth wall. when marie mentions destiel, that’s it. he breaks out of it. dean looks straight at us. then they go to the impala and sam teases dean about how to say destiel (i’m sure we all remember that)
might i add. just how we can’t see how there’s anything for sam and dean to possibly do next ep, sam says:
then we have this little gem:
let’s say things don’t go well for her. another favorite of mine:
cool cool cool cool cool. same thing happened in 15x19. chuck is cut out of the story. and now? for 15x20? what’s next?
(there’s also a ghostfacers meta that i love floating around on tumblr rn. just to also lend credence to that theory: they all chant “ghost facers!” before the show starts)
now i’ll throw this in here too and i might be reaching, but in the first act we also get cas’ song “I’ll Just Wait Here Then.”
waiting…where? the empty? because cas certainly wasn’t in 15x19…unless he was waiting somewhere. unless we were waiting for him. and we know from 10x05 that he makes an appearance in act two to “explore the nature of destiel”
and now perhaps the most important quote from the episode (other than the one about truth i mentioned in the original post):
and then they kill the scarecrow created by calliope, and it turns into this
look familiar? maybe like, i dunno, the title card of s15? of the empty?
then comes the intermission:
which we saw in the montage at the end of 15x19, like i said previously.
and after the intermission?
“Usually this is where Sam and Dean take off before anyone asks any questions.”
and…they did. they did that, at the end of 15x19. sam responds that that’s probably a good idea, but instead, sam and dean stay to see the beginning of act 2.
dean tells marie that it’s been informative to watch the play, and then says “i have my version, and you have yours.”
reminds me of dabb saying “you have to do the ending that makes most sense to you.”
from 10x05 dialogue, at the very beginning of act 2:
“dean:” you’re right, sammy. out on the road. just the two of us.
“sam:” the two of us against the world.
sam: just you and me, going wherever the story takes us. just us.
dean: finally free.
and then what happens in Fan Fiction? CARRY ON STARTS PLAYING.
THE LAST SHOT FROM THE EPISODE. EXCEPT THEY NEVER GOT TO SEE ACT TWO.
think about it. 10x05 was the introduction of chuck into the narrative. 15x19 was his exit. now they’re on to their own interpretation. they’re free. fan fiction was telling us this the entire time.
the montage at the end of 15x19? after the shot of the intermission curtains from 10x05, we begin getting scenes of family. when the song says “I’d love to stick around” there’s a shot of cas turning around. one of very few shots that we get of cas up until this point (NOT TO MENTION THE SONG IS CALLED RUNNING ON EMPTY).
and the final three shots? they’re of tfw 2.0. they’re of what the show is really about:
